Here is a quick photoshop I did for what the plans are for the Portico. I have a feeling that removing the old pre-cast steps are going to be the worst part of the entire project. Anyone have any recommendations? Should I just rent a jackhammer and go to town?

When you say pre-cast, I think of the type of steps that you buy, load on a truck and set. I have moved that type and you can probably sell them on CL or give them away and get someone else to move them or they should bust up fairly easily.

If you have a poured stoop, rent the jackhammer. Wear hearing protection and start on the edges away from your house. One wrong blow with a sledgehammer (usually the last one or two) will send a chunk of concrete the size of a small meteorite into your siding and you are doing a siding repair also.

You might also check with the guys who did your slab on the build and see if they will price removing it for you before you book the rental. Having a Bobcat and a pneumatic jackhammer will make it much faster and easier. Remember each cubic foot of concrete is about 150#.

Yes, pre-cast set in place off a truck. These ugly things below.

Good suggestion on Craigslist though, maybe I could get someone to come and take them away for free. That would certainly be ideal!

I have moved them like that a couple of times. They are heavy and the first inch is a significant feeling. Line up your buddies and make sure you have their favorite beer in the cooler that day.

If your walk is poured over them bust them up. If your walk was not poured against or over them I would wait until I was close to decided on what I was going to do then list them. Make sure you have enough material to build a temporary setup so you and your family can get out in an emergency situation before you list them. If nobody comes before you are ready to build then they should move out of the way okay with a little help. Have a sheet of plywood for dunage so they won't sink into the ground. The should bust up with a sledgehammer (watch out for your siding and windows) pretty easily either where they sit or in the yard. They probably have a mile of remesh in them so it will probably be a lot of little chips and a lot more encased wire.

Is this common construction practice in your area? I ask because I usually see poured stoops around here except on older construction.

Hey Mr Roboto, I just caught up with the last couple of month's of your thread and (I know that it's old news now, but...) I must offer my belated congratulations to you and Mrs Roboto on the arrival of your little Roboto.

The deck, stairs and railings turned out great and I agree that the portico will be a great visual addition to the front of the house (and, if it's pouring rain, you have somewhere dry to stand while you open your door).

To hell with the budget.....I think you need to go full front porch! Your house is very similar to the way ours looked with a large flat facade. We added a porch across the front and it gave not only some curb appeal but great living space.

Thanks for the tips! Yes, they're extremely common here on houses built in the 90s. Mine was built in 1992. They are such an eye sore, but every house on my street has them.

Thank you for the congratulations! She's already 2 months old now. I can't believe how quickly the time is passing already.

That looks beautiful! I really wish we could do something like that. Someday, maybe. It would look so out of place in my neighborhood, though haha.

Finally have a small garage update. I picked up a new compressor last night. As much as I wanted a big 2 stage Quincy, I couldn't justify the cost. The reality is, it doesn't get used a TON, just to run my air tools while working on cars for now for the most part. Home depot dropped the price of the 60 gallon husky from $499 to $449, and I kindly asked for another 10% off, which they surprisingly gave me without question, so I got it for $400. It's replacing the old 25 gallon craftsman in the back there. I'm planning on doing one of the Rapid Air kits to plumb the garage as well.

Thank you! Hoping to get it wired up at some point this weekend. After much debate between copper/black pipe to outfit the garage, I think I decided to just keep it simple and do the pex-al-pex RapidAir Maxline 3/4" kit. Planning on a drop at the work bench, a drop by the lift, and a drop in between the 2 garage doors at the rear so I can easily hook up a line to fill up tires in the driveway. May do one overhead on the ceiling for a tractable reel in the future, too.

Managed to get a few hours out in the garage one day over this long weekend.

First, I installed this retractable cord reel. It's been on my list for a while, I just never got around to picking one up. I used of my lowes gift cards to pick up this Bayco reel. It seems well enough made, hopefully it lasts over time. It's definitely very convenient.

Next up, it was time for the compressor. When I finished up the garage, I ran a 220 line to the opposite corner of my garage from where I ended up wanting the compressor. I really wasn't in the mood to go up in the attic and dig my way through 12" of blown in insulation, so I ended up running a conduit line over. I already regret it, because it looks kind of crappy, but oh well. I'll paint it eventually and it will helpfully blend in a bit better.

I ordered the maxline kit for running the air around the garage, but didn't have time to start getting that up, so for now I just installed a regulator directly to the tank outlet so I can use it for the time being.

The thing is pretty damn loud though. There is a TON of noise coming from the intake, and the fact that it's next to the wall just amplifies it. I've seen people take a few measures to silence this, so I'll have to start looking into that.

One the reason's I like having my compressor mounted in a separate building behind or beside the garage so the noise is not in the house nor garage space.

Definitely a nice luxury to have it outside the shop. If I ever build the lean-to off the back, it will be moved out there for sure.

This is what I got based on recommendations here. I used it on the intake which made a huge improvement on my oiled single stage craftsman.

Thanks for the info. I came across those as well in this thread:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=306235

This husky compressor has a funky intake setup. It doesn't just have threaded intake ports like most compressors do, so a little fabrication is in order to make a plate to be able to mount the silencers to. I'll try and live with it first before I start down that road, but will likely give it a shot eventually.

I used the same pads under my compressor! What I did though, was cut an extra into quarters and put each piece above the compressor foot, and then the nut with a fender washer. Seemed to be quieter than without the top pad, since the bolt is completely isolated from the compressor now. Mine is also in a corner , but I have cabinets on either side, which may dampen the noise.

That's a good idea! I'll have to give it a shot if I notice that area being a noise generator. For now, the intake noise overpowers everything else.

Thank you! We are all doing well. My daughter is a little over 2.5 months old now. Time is flying.

You have no idea how time flies. Mine just turned 4. I still haven't even gotten to painting the trim in her room that went up before she was born.

So I've received a few PMs asking about the pictures in my thread. Unfortunately, as I'm sure many of you are aware, Photobucket has changed the way they operate in that they no longer allow hotlinking to the images hosted with them for free. Between being a new dad, and getting T-boned by a drunk driver resulting in my car being totaled recently, I've just had no time to go through the process of re-hosting and hotlinking everything again. My apologies. I hope to do it sometime in the near future.

No injuries I hope.

Sorry to hear of your accident, hope you are ok and insurance company is taking care of you.

Thanks for asking - I'm ok, just had a really sore back and neck. Thankfully the wife and daughter were not in the car with me, which is all I really could have asked for. After some back and forth on the value of my car (as can be expected) they cut me a check, so we're good there.

For anyone using Google Chrome Try this https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/photobucket-embed-fix/naolkcpnnlofnnghnmfegnfnflicjjgj

I have been able to see all the photos..

Interesting. I'm a Firefox user, I wonder if a similar plugin exists for that.

Thank you for this. By installing this plugin, I was able to save the images on a post by post basis. I then re-uploaded all of them using the forums "attachment" feature. It took me 2 damn hours, but every picture is back up attached to all the posts. All 168 of them!!! I kept getting PMs from people who wanted to see certain things, especially the concrete work I did in prep for the lift, so everything should be viewable again now :rocker:

She already loves it out there. Her favorite pastime is to watch me work around the yard/house/garage while my wife holds her. It’s cute.

Here she is dressed up for her first Halloween

Well I really haven't updated much in a while, because I really haven't had much to update. Few small things.

Now that I have a daughter, I attempted to grow a lawn this fall. Decent first step. A lot of grass grew from the overseeding, however there are still a lot of weeded areas. Hoping to start up in the spring with a lawn care regime to take care of this. Fingers crossed. As you can see.... I also still haven't had time to paint the window trim on the second story

attachment.php

I also did a gravel parking area next to the garage. It's nice having some extra parking spaces. I told my wife we have more room for project cars.... she just laughed. For now, it gives me a space to park my truck without blocking any of the garage doors.

attachment.php

Also, as luck would have it, I hit a deer in my 2017 new Rav4. This is the replacement for the 2015 Rav4 that was totaled after a drunk driver t-boned me, as I mentioned a few posts back. Going through quite the string of bad luck lately...

My new job in construction has me all over NE and I will say the last three weeks I have seen more deer carcasses either shredded on the road or in the medians. Lack of hunting is causing them to be over populated out towards Boston area.

Be glad it didn't end up in the windshield.

I've noticed the same. Thankfully, they're usually on the side of the road or in my backyard.... not in the road.

Body shop is saying 3-4 weeks until it's repaired. To add insult to injury.... the transmission is starting to go in my wife's car now too. It's a 2003 Sorento with 150K on it, so it's not worth repairing. Guess we're going car shopping this weekend :tantrum2:

Hey there Mr Roboto.. just spent over an hour going thru your entire thread. Really nice work on your garage. I like how your drywall & paint came out, the lift, workbench, the deck, etc.. (and the daughter! lol).
I used to live in Merrimack NH, and before that i lived in Westborough MA. Now I live down on the PA/DE/MD borders. I also got my deck rebuilt this summer, and went with Timbertech composite. I spent much of the summer finishing my screen porch into an all season-sun room. And now I am in the process of having a detached garage built. Its all framed, and waiting for lights, electrical and concrete. Next summer I am looking forward to getting a lift put in, but I am thinking i want to do a 4-post with casters for the flexibility of moving it.
Anyway, I wanted to say hello and let you know that your garage came out great.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to read through it all! I grew up in MA and moved to NH. How do you like it down south? Good luck with your build too, I’ll have to read through your thread when I get a moment too.

How in the hell did I miss this?!

Christ, glad to hear you're doing OK. And glad to hear the family is doing well. So that would put your daughter at right about 8.5 months old now? Awesome. Such a fun age and it just gets better (until they hit 2, that is ;) )!

My son turned 2 in October and baby boy #2 is due to hit stores 2/19....

Haven't checked in this thread lately, glad to hear all's well with the baby girl! Mine's 9 months and change, and growing like a weed!

Sorry to hear about the accidents... my '13 camaro got hit 3 weeks after I got it... and again less than a year later. About $12k in body work in the first year. After that, the "magic is gone" and it was just a hard to see out of commuter beater. I recently replaced it with a '18 WRX, hopefully it won't suffer the same fate. Certainly more practical... baby seat actually fits!

So it's not totally un-garage related... I like the parking area off to the side! I added one at my house, still need more (2 trailers, 2 trucks, 2 cars... and nothing fits inside!). I may build a detached shop with lots of parking.

My wife says she's just like me though, because I'm the same way. One has been enough of a challenge, I can't imagine having 2. Best of luck with your new arrival!

Thanks! The parking area has worked out well, but I'm finding it's no the easiest thing to clear snow off of. Someday, I'd like to add a roof over the portion next to the garage, so hopefully that will help out with the snow situation.
