My son (3 year old) was jealous when my daughter was born back in June. We just started to ask him to help us do a bunch of things when we had to change a diaper or needed the burp rag etc and he feels included in taking care of her so he started not to be as jealous.

Congrats.

Congrats! Double trouble!

Congratulations on your new addition to the family.

Thanks again everyone!

Steve, we have been including her quite a bit which has been great. Sometimes she wants to over-help, which can be hard when we tell her no. But after 2 weeks, we’re all settling into a rhythm.

Well, another week and the baby will be 2 months already! Haven’t had time for any projects, but this one found me. My friend came over to use the lift. He’s used it countless times in the past, but he must have had a brain fart, because he put his wife’s car right up into my overhead garage openener. Squish!

321AE008-DDF3-4060-B6AE-8107E1CFE573.jpeg

It worked for a day, but the gears must have shifted inside and it bound up and ceased to work. I’ve been wanting to upgrade to jackshaft openers for years, so this was the excuse I needed. And he was willing to pay towards the upgrade! I replaced the openers on both sides with Liftmaster Elite 8500w with battery backups. Great for when the wife needs to get out in case of a power outage and I’m not home.

EDIT: I should also add that they’re plugged into extension cords for now. hopefully I have some more time in the spring to get up in the ceiling and hardwire 2 plugs for them.

I also have been wanting to upgrade to the spring loaded “green hinge” system so I did that as well. My doors have a large gap where heat can escape, and are really sloppy. The move in and out with the wind. Due to an unforeseen circumstance, I need to send the top hinges back to exchange them for a different size, so the install isn’t quite complete yet. But I like the product

2 months, wow! hang in there, mine's a bit over 4 months now and it's going fast.

The new opener setup looks fantastic. I remember looking into those liftmasters but sadly there is not enough room on the side of mine :ROFLMAO:

Thanks for taking the time to read through it all!

Tell me about it! I’ll be thankful when I can sleep through the night though hah.

And thanks! I really love the openers too. They’re super smooth, and I love the fact that I gained about 10” of clearance over my lift. Bummer you can’t fit one in. I’ve seen people add a sprocket and chain so that they sit below the jackshaft if you don’t have the clearance next to it. Something to think about!

Had a little moment today, as I moved the Jeep into a new parking configuration I’m going to try for the winter. I know this is all just meaningless “stuff” but damn, it’s been a long road to get this space where it’s at now. I’ve worked very hard, and pretty proud of where things are at. Also proud of how far I’ve come with my abilities, and what I’ve been able to tackle myself over the years. I can be hard on myself sometimes, because I’m a “serial accomplisher”. If I’m not checking things off my to do list, completing projects, making improvements etc I feel like I’m wasting time by not being productive. So sometimes, I need to pull up a little before and after shot to make myself feel better about things!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, and has a happy new year. Looking forward to taking a step back from some projects, spending more time with family, and trying to bring myself to rest more… which is extremely difficult for me.

What are your thoughts on the green hinges? I have a similar issue with my door and have been looking for a solution myself!

You should be proud!

I'm similar in wanting to be accomplishing stuff all the time. I know you're in the same boat as me with a baby and a toddler now, and from what I can tell I'm sure they're your number one priority like my kids are mine. But I also get that self-inflicted nagging feeling inside of getting very little done in the way of projects. Can't help it, I always want to be making something! That feeling of making no "progress" can be tough. But the pictures don't lie, you've gotten a ton done over the years. And like @zmotorsports said it's the perfect time to reflect on that and take a little breather. I'm trying to do the same...

Everything looks great.

It's good to take a step back once in a while to reflect back on what you have accomplished. For me it puts things into perspective when I get bogged down by certain things taking longer than I feel they should.

I hear ya on that. My wife has learned to multiply the time by 2-3x anytime she asks "how long do you think this will take?"

What are your thoughts on the green hinges? I have a similar issue with my door and have been looking for a solution myself!

The product is good. They make references on their site to hinge position numbers, but what they don't tell you is that these are actually industry wide numbers used to reference the depth of the hinge. Their standard 4 panel door package includes hinge numbers 1-3. My door, for some reason, used hinge numbers 2-4. So, I had to call them up, send back my #1 hinges, and exchange them for #4s. Not a big deal, just added some extra time and I had to pay for some extra shipping. The end result is good, though! Closed that gap right up.

You should be proud!

You got that right! They are my world and are always my #1 priority. Spending time with them always takes precedent, but that thought is always there in the back of my head of stuff I need/want to get done. There just aren't enough hours in the day anymore to take care of everything I want to get done! Life is just one big balancing act, I suppose. it's all about finding that happy medium.

We’ll, it’s been about 1 month since I put the new jackshaft garage door openers up. Still have a bunch of odds and ends to wrap up with that install, so I was able to get out a bit this weekend.

First up, here’s where the hardwired buttons for my old openers exited the wall. No before photo, but there were holes from some big drywall anchors, and the wires themselves. Very annoying repair, because it required patching holes in 3 out of 4 colors painted on this wall. So, I patched all the holes, painted, taped, painted taped and repeated until it was done. I used this wireless button for the new openers. It’s actually meant to be clipped to your visor, but I removed the clip, and attached a blank black plate to the wall and double sided taped the opener it to that. Good enough 👍🏼 And oops, my black stripe has a little wave to it… don’t tell anyone!

B4AEA0C5-F701-4440-8A76-8382E6954B20.jpeg

Next up… patch up all the holes in the ceiling where the old overhead openers were mounted. So, more spackle and paint.

684F62F9-8A96-4E70-9C27-E3D77ACB1E59.jpeg

Then, I mounted the overhead wireless LED lights. Great, more holes added to the area I just finished patching up! The little black box you see next to the light is a homelink repeater. I have Homelink mirrors in all my cars, but 3 of the 4 cars can’t talk to the new openers because of the new security 3.0 code system they use. The homelink bridge acts as a repeater basically, to allow the older openers built into the mirrors to work. Installed it, programmed it, and it works great!

381D2878-7371-4ABE-BA07-870EC3AADC47.jpeg

Last up, was to reprogram the keypads I have outside to open the new openers. One of them has had a dead battery for a while. In the process of replacing the battery, I discovered it had leaked acid and corroded the little clip that attaches to the 9V battery. It crumbled apart when I tried to remove the old battery. So, I found a 5 pack of replacement clips with wires attached on Amazon (I miss RadioShack for moments like this), disassembled they keypad down to the PWB, and soldered on the new clip. Back to good!
8351EE78-B060-44E1-9A71-62110E5784A9.jpeg

I still have to install the electronic deadbolts that these openers have for extra security, and run dedicated outlets. But, it will probably be at least another month until I get back out here haha.

Chris! It is extremely good to hear from both you and Jen! I still stink of you two often. Thank you very much, and I hope all is well on your end as well.

This pregnancy was an absolute whirlwind this time around, but we're very happy and fortunate to have this smiling face to stare at now.

Nothing too exciting to report here…. Just been buying and staring at stuff vs actually doing anything since that’s all I have time for hahah.

I bought 4 rust free doors for the Jeep a while ago, that I need to prep to have painted (they’re blue) but I’ve been on the hunt for a passenger fender as well since mine has had some bondo work done to it at some point that is now cracking. Finally lucked out and found one, in black too! Just need to swap my gloss black fender flare over to it, buff it out, and remove the older sport decal. I also bought one of those stubby antennas for it too. Never tried one before, so we’ll see how FM reception is effected.

5F46ADEA-6E8F-4CCD-AFA9-2C268F12D4BE.jpeg

Also sourced some hard to find overhead console components. I’ll be able to cobble together what I need from this pile. I’ve actually became friends with the guy I bought this Jeep from. He found me a 1999 specific overhead console harness, which was the last piece of the puzzle for me. They’re super rare and sell for $250+ on eBay. He scooped it up in a junkyard for me for $20! The screen from the short console needs to get swapped into the long one, and it needs to be re covered with headliner fabric. This will give me more lights inside, and the driving computer, which reports MPG, DTE, trip time, compass, and most importantly, exterior temperature. One silly modern car feature that I look for every time we’re in the Jeep.

9B01BC38-FA28-4AE8-ADDA-0BE5811B10EF.jpeg

Also… I’ve really been contemplating taking the Jeep to the next level. All this time, I’ve kind of been going for a step above OEM+. But now I’m itching to go full cool factor. Here’s what I’m looking at.

Front bumper:

E30C3467-C8B9-49E1-BA47-BF328BD326B7.jpeg

rear bumper and skid plate:

ADE0CBB2-2BEB-4BE0-AA99-39B60BD4B2C0.jpeg

optional tire carrier

A60A0974-F973-4AD8-B121-E7CCBF1DC554.jpeg

and a much sleeker low profile roof rack with integrated light bar:

17EBB7A3-B38D-4354-A984-1E11BD551FA8.jpeg

None of this requires any cutting or modifications to the Jeep that can’t be undone, and which I want to avoid. Aside from looking bad ***, it will give me front and rear hitch points, fog lights, reverse lights, and recovery points. It’s all super expensive though, so I’ll likely do it in stages. Thoughts???

Also, I’ve been eyeing these basically since joining the forums. Finally picked myself up a set of Knipex Plier Wrenches. The quality is spectacular, can’t wait to put them to the test!

I was at Home Depot this weekend and they had rolls of diamond plate rubber mats for cheap. I had the idea to try it on top of my mobile work bench, so I grabbed one and screwed it down. It looks cool, we’ll see how it does over time. I’ve just had 1/8” hardboard that I replace as a sacrificial layer previously. It was due to be replaced again, so I figured why not. I think the bumps will annoy me, but for rough assembly work it may be okay.

Got to work disassembling and rebuilding the XJ overhead console:

C6F3FDEF-6930-47B2-88E7-D17261FB677B.jpeg

Swapped some parts around, transferred my keyless entry board over to it, and covered it in new fabric. I made a few mistakes with the cuts on the fabric, because I was rushing since I had a limited time window. Lesson learned, if i don’t have the time to do it properly, then just wait. Oh well, it doesn’t look bad enough to warrant re-doing it, so I’ll live with it for now. And I’ll probably be the only one to notice anyways.

70AAC94E-07B5-4751-AF5C-219DDD869F96.jpeg

I actually have a bunch of stereo components coming this week for it. Metra makes a kit to convert it to a double din, so I have a kenwood with apple car play coming, new front speakers, and a 12” subwoofer. The inner 18 year old in me approves!

I have this Friday off, so hoping to get that and this overhead console installed!

Wrapped up some of the interior mods on the Jeep last night!

First up, any project is an excuse to buy new tools. I’ve been dealing with a crappy all in one wire stripper/crimper for years. I finally invested in a decent pair of strippers (one standard and one automatic) and a nice ratcheting crimper, since I’d be using them a lot for this.

826E764D-36DE-42CF-A448-3220AB735E06.jpeg

Here is the double din CarPlay radio installed. The XJ doesn’t fit one stock. Metra makes a kit to convert it, but it requires some trimming of the dash behind the faceplate, including cutting and patching the hvac vents. Kind of a pain, but totally worth it! Nice to have some modern day touches in there.

137A2E27-7ED6-4DF8-86C6-79015A372E73.jpeg

I also added a 12” all in one subwoofer in the trunk.

ACA6064D-0D1C-4926-AAB8-DECE621003D5.jpeg

The Jeep came with a rare infinity audio system, which included a factory amp and door tweeters. It sounded horrible, as can be expected for most 90s audio systems. I bypassed the amp, and had to remove the door tweeters. I had to order some blank sail panels on eBay to fill the voids.

removed:

34D8B4AE-F400-4AD3-8673-228F6CA02989.jpeg
Old tweeters out:

5513EB2A-DA3D-411F-881B-299D028FE49A.jpeg
These tweeters sell for $250 on eBay, believe it or not. So selling these, the head unit, and the amp will offset a good chunk of this upgrade. Win! Not pictured, but I also replaced the front door speakers with a nice new set of 2 way infinity speakers. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it all sounds! These AIO subwoofers sure have come a long way.

Last up, the overhead console is in. What a pain. Required the headliner to come down again, be cut, and the wiring harness to be replaced between the passenger kick panel, up the a pillar, and to the roof. But it’s in. I love having the external temperature readout, and the extra lighting.

Your shop looks great! I think you'll be really happy with the jackshaft openers.

Thank you for the green hinge recommendation. I just ordered three sets for my shop. Exactly what I need!

Thank you very much! So far so good on the openers, definitely a nice improvement over the old ones. Glad you liked the green hinges too! I’ve definitely noticed an improvement. On a windy day I’d be working out there and could hear the door blowing in and out in the track. Now, there is no movement! Good luck I hope they work well for you too 👍🏼

I want to thank you too for mentioning the green hinges. I didn't know those were a thing. I just bought a set and need to install them. If this first set works out, I have two more doors to retrofit.

Dan, when I did a quick search, Zoro had a much better price than Amazon. Like you, I have three doors to do (doing two to start). Amazon price for two sets is $215.98 -- Zoro price (with free shipping) is $140.42. I didn't include sales tax in either case so it's a savings of more than $75. Gonna put that money in my Milwaukee M-Crack fund.

Wow, did not realize the price was so different. I also ordered mine direct from them.

They always come on when opening the garage door, but you can set to optionally have them come on with motion as well. I have that feature turned off. And thanks for the kind words! There are a lot of amazing garages on here, so that means a lot!

Hinges arrived today. That made a significant impact. There's no gap anymore!!

Happy to hear they worked out for you!

Quick little update today. There were two cigarette lighter outlets on this lower switch panel. I replaced the one on the left with a dual powered usb charger that also has a voltage display. And the one on the right, I replaced with a usb pass through, which connects to the radio. Cleaned things up nice, I think!

Nice job on the speakers and headunit. Carplay is definitely nice to have. I like the USB pass-through, too, nice and clean.

Thanks man! Hopefully the updates are doing their part to fuel that small desire you mentioned a while back to get yourself a brick on wheels of your own 😂 I think that VW deserves to take the winters off!

I posted this pic of the replacement fender I got for my XJ a while ago from a junk yard. I’m prepping some parts to have painted, and I wasn’t sure if this fender would match up well or not. It was pretty oxidized/dull. So I thought I’d give buffing it a shot before lumping it in with the pile of parts I’m prepping for paint, since it already is black after all.

4FD6841C-8D8B-4D5B-8506-E307ECB76C21.jpeg

First, I removed the fender flare, body side molding, and “Sport” decal. This is from a 97, and my 99 has different badging.

Hit it with a clay bar, buffed it with a heavy cutting pad and compound, followed up by a finishing polish. It cleaned up great! Now it looks better than the rest of the Jeep!

4D37499D-2FF7-4F79-A794-B77291300853.jpeg

746227B5-CC63-49A0-B402-E1DFB283CC23.jpeg

I have a little surface rust to clean up on the inner lip that was hidden by the fender flare. I also need to order new brackets to reattach the gloss black flare from my Jeep… those always break when disassembling. Those blue doors in the back need to get painted and swapped over eventually as well.

BUT this lead me to realize that most of my detailing supplies are either low, not any good after sitting all these years, or just junk. I used to be really into detailing before I bought my house, but interests shifted. Now, all 4 of our cars need some paint correction, and wax/sealant. Since kids came along, I’ve always kept them very clean, neglected in terms of paint correction/protection. So, I just made a big order from Obsessed Garage in hopes to get everything dialed in! I’ve been pretty stressed out with work lately, so if I can find the time, detailing usually is pretty relaxing for me.

Well, I finally did something I’ve been seriously dreading doing ever since buying the Jeep. I knew the passenger front floorboard had a small hole in it (visible from the underside) but these things rust from the inside out. I really didn’t want to know…. But I stripped the entire interior and pulled the carpet. As expected, the passenger floorboard is pretty damn crusty and has rusted through in a few spots. This is an all too common occurrence on xjs, unfortunately. I was bummed, but onward we go!

D37D5990-B264-4B16-85FA-FACF3AB7D116.jpeg

904B81CA-2BF0-4D68-A5CE-E558E5064CC0.jpeg

Ordered a new passenger floor pan and seat crossmember. This is one job I’m going to have a shop do, for a few different reasons.

The rest of the floor was very solid, thankfully. I’m going to have them grind down the whole thing, replace the panels that need it, and POR-15 the entire floor. They’re also going to paint and swap over those doors for me. All for what I thought was a very reasonable price. They’re booked up for the next 1-2 months though, so I’m going to have to wait a bit, but that’s okay.
