The theory that I understand is that while the wood is burning it creates a venturi effect and when the exhaust comes out it sounds like a rocket??? Supposedly when it burns it's at such a high temperature that there is little to no exhaust. We will see.

it's a rocket stove because you feed sticks in through the side and the venturi pulls up the flame drawing in more air to stoke the fire. it makes a good hot way to cook over.

you can make them out of soup cans, cinder blocks, you name it. the ones I make from soup cans work amazing.

the pic on wiki kind of explains it. there are hundreds of variations and plans all over the net if you do a search.

I love building little stoves, if you want to try something smaller scale, though not a rocket stove per-se, the mountain ranger DIY stove plans are fun to make and only use 3 cans.

I also attached a pic of my little methanol stoves made from beer cans. you can make them in about 10 minutes and boil water faster than a microwave. I use HEET gasline antifreeze for fuel (it's just methanol).

Abaker, when you get your rocket stove done, post some pics of it in action!

There are dozen, probably hundreds of videos on YouTube on rocket stove (for cooking), rocket heater and rocket mass heaters.

They all work on the same principle. Air is drawn in at the bottom. Once the flue is warm, the "draft" causes a lot of suction making it sound like a rocket.

From what I can tell, the OP design is more of a "stove" NOT a heater. Heaters start with the same design, but surround the flue with a non combustible thermal layer (concrete, vermiculite, etc). Then the entire "stove" is placed into a second enclosed chamber. There is head space at the top so the flue gases come out and are forced down and out the chimney exit which is at the bottom.

Sizing of the chimney and the feed/air inlet are some what critical. When working properly, they will burning pretty much any solid combustible material.

A "mass heater" adds a lot of mass typically in the shape of a adobe "coach" that is heated. The mass holds the heat for a long time.

This is a 15 part series on building a rocket heater. You only need to skim through the first couple of videos to see where he is going.

Some more pictures. It's not finished but I had to try it out. Couldn't stand it anymore. It's a little hard to get started. Didn't want to get it going full bore tonight. Will play with it again tomorrow. 05580c180cac5c089c2fce6cc225eabd.jpg2affbef4459c313d74fdf1ce2c067b44.jpg4e7d490cb3f79d27e3f96c101dae2052.jpg225f2a700ffe3fad29588be9765de549.jpg2a4afa542e96fc5303c90e19aea5f18d.jpg

I have one and like it.... except for the headgear...

Best money I ever spent on a helmet. Had a Jackson for years and still have it. The Speedglass just works. This one has the side windows as well. Was worried I wouldn't like that feature but it's been great.

Great night to fire up the Rocket Stove. It's running a little rich, the header is getting some color.
