Rockwell 1124 floor drill press?

I picked up a Rockwell model 1124 floor drill press today for $100.

I know its supposed to be a lot better quality than the crappy craftsman one I have. Anyone own one of these specific models or know about the quality? The first couple things I've noticed right off is its missing the quill feed handle and the chuck key (jacobs no.3 1/2"). Its going to need some pretty heavy rust removal/paint, a new belt, and possibly new quill bearings.

Is this jacobs no.3 chuck decent?

If anyone has any good sources for parts that would be awesome.

Nice drill press. It was made in 1976. The Jacobs chuck is a good chuck if it has not been abused. It uses a Jacobs K3 chuck key (pretty common, I would get one off of Ebay).

The handle looks the same as used on the 14" drill press. Here is one on Ebay. Email the seller and confirm the diameter first.

Be sure to lubricate the splindle splined shaft and the mating surface of the spindle pulley. I see that as a wear spot on a number of this series of drill press due to lack of maintenance.

How to tell if it is worn:
Hold the spindle pulley stationary with one had and turn the spindle back and forth to see how much flop there is in the splined interface. Lots of slop shows you have wear.

Thanks for the info. Ill check that out today.

I can't seem to find a manual for the 1124 anywhere. I've checked all over Google and vintage machinery. I was thinking it might be the same as the 15-081 but when I checked the range of models that manual covers, the 1124 isn't listed.

It is a pretty generic Delta 15" drill press, so any manual of the 60's or 70's vintage should be similar (not counting the 6+6 or VS model that is).

How much slop is too much? and exactly where should I lubricate? What lubricant?

To much slop is when the spindle splines are 100% gone. Yours looks great. I have the same machine and the handle is just a straight rod from the factory. It was their economy model, no balls.

below is a picture of a air spring I add under the table to help lift it. It is a 30lb spring and can be had from McMaster carr.

That is an excellent idea! I have actually been looking around for a good lift/lift assist idea for the table, and was considering using the counterweight method. I'll have to check this one out as well, thanks a lot.
