Roll cab options sold in Australia

Recently I have returned from working overseas as a car mechanic, went to Sydney tools to buy a roll cab to start new job, would have purchased white international, sidchrome, sp, milwaukee but they came part of kits and wouldn't sell the roll cabs empty.

I bought a Daytona 2 bay roll cab (same boxes as what supercheap sell) and I've destroyed the rollers of the long top drawer within 4 weeks. I expected it to last maybe 6-12 months. It says it can handle 30kg and put less than 30kgs in it but the toolbox steal is too thin and causes the rollers to sag and roll on bad angles.

The problem in Australia is that there are low end toolboxes, Sidchrome, Kinchrome, milwaukee etc and then Snap On, no Mac or Matco to give a middle ground.

Does anyone have experience to know if the Sidchrome or SP are built better?

Are any matco toolboxes rebadged as an Australian brand?

I don't care where they are made, I just want to know which is the most robust out of what's available, there is Jimmy Tools in Adelaide but no idea on quality.

JB tools seems to ha e Montezuma, those are sturdy, they aren't snapon or Mac boxes by any means, but they are who make the boxes that John Deere rebrands here in the US and Montezuma made their name selling boxes to farmers and heavy equipment mechanics, so taking abuse is what they do best.

I took a look at the boxes listed on Jimmy's tolls, and from the pictures they look decent, none of the signs of an obvious cheapo tool box, might give those guys a call and see if one will send you a video of how the drawers slide and how much they wiggle.

Discounting the obvious cheap junk like Supatool and the Ebay rubbish there's still a good range of toolboxes and rollcabs. That said, I have a couple of these rollcabs which have actually served ok for very light duty use. Wouldn't recommend for serious use though.

Quality varies a bit with Snap-on at the top for price but not necessarily quality. In my opinion Sidchrome are just as good and half (well, significantly less) the cost. I have one old Sidchrome box and it's stood up to a 40 year beating and still works just the same as it did when new. I also have a much newer Kincrome Bluesteel rollcab and top box which I'm impressed with.

All my heavier tools are in a couple of Maxim Pro rollcabs with mid and top boxes and they have been outstanding for the price. I had a couple of minor issues when I first bought them and Just Pro Tools were excellent in resolving the problems.

Although not mine I've had some experience with an SP Tools box and rate it as similar to Kincrome and professional quality.

I've been considering replacing all the 27" stacks with one or two wide rollcabs and have pretty much settled on Sidchrome, Kincrome and Maxim as the only brands to look at. There probably are others in that mid to higher professional end, but not convenient for me. I did look at the Daytona stuff - was not impressed. Just a rebrand of the same junk that Supercheap sells.

Shop around. There's plenty of places that sell quality boxes without the tools and will deal on price if you look like walking out the door.

Daytona is generally rubbish for everything.

White international should be ok. The others will depend on the exact model as they probably have a mix of quality levels

I wish there was someone selling ones in Australia not made in China/Taiwan

Thank you for the detailed reply, I'm pretty sure Sidchrome and Kinchrome have the thickest gauge steal out of what is available, the sp ones drawers feel smoother to operate.

Yeah, problem with White is the that that long top drawer only has single slides not dual and the handles are like kitchen cupboard handles and can't be opened anywhere like most tool boxes.

There's Faber, but they don't seem to do rollcabs?

I did some more research, Sidchrome uses dual slides on the long drawer of the 2 and 3 Bay roll cabs which is rated at 90kgs for the slides.

The steal thickness is 1.2mm "where it counts" - Sidchrome rep.

The Kinchrome blue steel 2 bay roll cab wieghs 60kgs and the equivalent Sidchrome is double the weight which means more steal.

I'm just about to buy 2 x 26" roll cabs for my new shed so I can put an old solid door on top and make a table. I'm basically tossing up between the Sidchrome (I already have a small Sidchrome top box I quite like) or Maxim. Maxim is cheaper, even with delivery and from all reports they're pretty good and at that size for a non-pro use it probably doesn't really matter which I get. But the double slides on the Sidchrome and voucher offer that Sydney Tools currently have for the Sidchrome will probably swing it that way. Most of the offers are for metric/AF socket sets though - who even buys new AF stuff in Au any more.

Yeah I'm a mechanic and never use AF, don't even own any.

In this video the bloke reviews the Sidchrome and Maxim box and talks about the differences between, he likes the Maxim box but the Sidchrome is slightly thicker steal 0.2mm and ranks Sidchrome above the Maxim but you are Right for non pro, it probably wont make a difference.
