Romex to Conduit question

Hey all,
I am wiring the air compressor and have 10-2 running from the panel through the attic. I want to transistion in the attic to 3/4 ' pvc conduit through the ceiling and down the wall for 6 ft to the PVC recepticle box. I know that some say its ok, some not. I have read that heat is the concern, but short runs for infrequent uses are ok. I would rather not have to put a junction box and then have to buy #10 THHN and junction. unless that is only legal eagle way to do it, then so be it. Its a 30a circuit, 16 feet away from the panel. 10 in the attic, 6 feet in conduit. Thoughts?

There's nothing in code that says you can't put romex in conduit. You're fine with just the one romex #10 cable in 3/4' PVC conduit. I wouldn't lose any sleep over what you want to do.

Got some of my answers even before I finished my own post. I love this place.

Hey all,

I might be new here, but as long as it is in conduit inside and not in a location considered "wet" you can get away with non-UF (thick gray coating) rated romex in conduit. Otherwise it is a a code violation. Romex is not rated for any wet locations. The other item you might want to think about is the derating or reduced ampacity of romex run in an attic space.

Looking at a similar situation with an outlet on a 20A circuit using #12 romex. Thought I'd have to use a junction box in the attic to transition to individual wires running down the conduit to the outlet... Glad to know that I can just run the romex through the conduit.

Thanks,
Paul

The thing with using romex (solid conductor) in conduit is that it can be a pain to pull. You need to use larger conduit than required to make it easier. Using single conductors of stranded wire in conduit is the way to go.

Mine was for a 5 foot fun down the wall. I hate working with 10ga. Push it through the 90 degree elbow *****. Even just a few feet. U used 3/4 in. PVC conduit.
