roof insulation/ shingle nails question

so im nearing the "end" of my 24x36 garage build and once the wiring is complete it will be time to insulate and put up the interior walls. Im not installing a ceiling on the cross beams of the trusses as i want easy access to the space above for storage but i do what to insulate the roof to keep it warm in the winter and more importantly cool in the summer. Im using this product to keep adequate air flow from the sofet(?) to the ridge vent to keep it from cooking in the summer sun as recommended from my construction buddies and the old dude at Lowes.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/ADO-Products-Provent-22-in-x-48-in-Rafter-Vents/3032768

The problem im seeing is that there are roofing nails poking through the sheathing everywhere and i cant get these to sit flush against the sheathing to allow stapling. so my question is, would it compromise the shingle nail if i ground down the nail flush with the bottom of the ply to let this product sit flush against the roof?

if you grind the nail it will very likely push it up thru the plywood. they don't have to fit tight to the plywood ceiling . just push the nails thru the dam where you can & don't worry that it's not 100% flat on the roof decking

Next time install the chutes first. Of course that doesn't help this time.

it would have been nice to do alot of things during the framing but the budget didn't allow for it. Now that i think about it i could just bend the nail over. would make for a hard time replacing the roof in the future tho.

You can get styrofoam version of these called attic baffles. Just push them against the nails. In the contest of nails vs styrofoam...the nails win.

I used Durovent baffles in white.
They are available at Lowes.
I used 2 per space to get the length up close to the ridge vent.
I stapled them to the sides of the 2x4's.
I also stapled lath board to the ends to give them some rigidity.
The shingle nails weren't much of a problem during installation.

The edges of the types of plastic baffles the OP has shown can flex a bit, so even if there are nails there from the shingles, you can still staple the baffle to the underside of the roofing material pretty easily.

I put similar type baffles in my old house. Of course I ran into the nails in the way thing, but the baffles are flexible enough that I was able to just push the edges of the baffles up to the underside of the roof sheathing with the staple gun where I wanted to put in the staples.

You don't need many staples to hold these in place. One at each top corner, one at each bottom corner (if you can reach it near the soffit area), and a few spaced out along each side just to hold it in place.

Also, I am sure you looked into this, but make sure you use staples will NOT penetrate thru the roof sheathing into the shingles!

These are the ones one of my neighbors bought for his attic in his house. And yes, the nails just push right thru them with no problems.

Do you have to use these for every rafter, or just the ones that lead to a roof vent?

Does your garage also have soffits?

Typically it's every other rafter "IF" you insulate on a standard ceiling.

"IF" you are insulating rafters/truss bays for a cathedral style ceiling with fiberglass, each and every bay needs vented from soffit to ridge vent. If you do not you will have horrific water/mold damage.

Only way around it is to use a closed cell spray foam.

Same thing I had. Just pierce the staple flange over the nail. This actually helps with the install by holding the vent up so you have a free hand to staple.
