Roofing Looks Concerns

Over the last few years we've had a few leaks from our roof. One was bad enough that it shorted out the blower to our furnace. Our tract home was built in '89 and and in the last year or two noticed numerous homes having their roofs redone. It's mainly pulling up the tiles, inspecting/replacing bad wood through new paper and putting the tiles back. I even had him add roof vents to my garage/shop to alleviate the summer's intense heat. So far the contractor's done a descent job, but we don't know roofs and why we obviously hired someone, pulled a permit and have done everything right. Just as a note: they'll be finishing up in the the next day or so.

We are concerned with the aesthetics, especially that seen from the street. There is a spot where the tiles zig-zag with a large gap between the tiles and side of the house. They're not in a straight line and tight up against the house like they should be. A couple houses with next to mine were redone as well in the past couple years by different contractors. The spot we're concerned about which is a similar spot on those homes are neat and tight.

At first I asked the worker about it and although his English isn't very good he said he could cut the tiles to make a straight line. I told him I'd talk to his boss first. I messaged him and he said the gap is normal, but they will be neatening it up. He added there is a "tile-pan" so there won't be any leaks or need to be concerned.

Is cutting the tiles to get a straight line normal if it's going to leave a wide gap? Are we being unreasonable with the looks, especially seeing other homes that don't look like this?

The first pic below is ours, the second and third are neighbors. I know the angle is slightly different, but without bothering the neighbors, it's about the best I can do.

How could they fix it? Fill in with cut tiles? Slide all tiles over to the left? How’s is normally done, so I know when I take it up with the contractor?

They clearly don’t know how to not have gaps. Someone was to lazy to do the cutting or doesn’t know how. Ask for the owner to come out to look at what his guys are doing.

They reused the original tiles, but I’m sure they were shifted around on the roof to different places. Should they have used new tiles for this line?

Tile doesn’t use step flashing. They use a tile pan with a raised edge to run the water to the bottom. Right now they are going to have to get more tile because everything was mixed up when they stripped it. I’m guessing that several pieces went into the trash because they couldn’t find a place for them. Good luck. Definitely no payment until it’s fixed.

There is a small a stack of tile that they had just in case some broke. Definitely not enough to take care of this, so they’ll need more for sure.

We still owe about 1/2 and will hold on to that until we’re satisfied.
