I'm looking to build my garage this spring and looking for advice. I want a 26'x32' garage with an up stairs man room of sorts. Any thoughts on the trusses. Anyone use one style and now wish they didn't? Any pictures and advice would help alot.

My garage is 24 x 32. I didn't use trusses,it's stick framed.I have two posts in the garage. This allowed me an upstairs kneewall room that is 24'x32'.I built it with 12' side walls, and the top of the second floor at about 9'4". The upstairs knee wall is about 3'4".The roof is an 8/12 pitch. Not a great picture, but gives you an idea of the space upstairs

Built Mine alot like DougB ^
Except mine is 30' Wide and 25' Deep.
Used a Steel I-Beam from front to back between the 2 car door and the 1 car door, without any posts in the middle.
I have a kneewall upstairs as well that is 4' High to give me a decent sized "Play Room" upstairs that I use alot.
Stick Built worked out much better than Trusses for this.
Good Luck

Mine is 26x30 stick built, used 2 gluelam beams under the full dormer walls and 2x12 joist. I built a dormer on each side of the roof (11/12 pitch gable) that gives me 8' ceilings in the dormer. The dormer walls are full length and sit on top of the gluelams for support. the dormers only give about 4'x8' more floor space on each side, but the ceiling space adds about 8'x9' per dormer.

I could not build the barn style due to covenants, but they are great bang for your buck.

I built my knee walls 4' from outside wall and doubled the 2x12's under the knee walls. I would really consider the dormers. Since I had the space I turned one into a closet and one into a bathroom. Remember to design room for a good size staircase. I thought I built mine too wide (based on framer recommendation)until I started hauling materials and furniture upstairs.

Whether you plan to right away or not, rough plumb for a bathroom. I rough plumbed mine (one upstairs and one under the staircase), and now have a toilet in both. The bonus room has turned into an apartment of sorts. Great for a hang out spot/extra sleeping quarters etc.

It does not cost much more to add rough in specs to the slab. I added water line and empty pvc pipes that I have since filled with cable and CAT5 wiring.

Good luck!

My 26 x 28 is stick built. I went for engineered joists to support the second floor etc and give me a clear span in the main floor of the garage. No posts anywhere. Second floor I just hung rafters. That is going to be a someday fun room, can't call it a man room because my SO is as much into it as I am. Sorry, these pics are old and there has been some work done since then.
Thanks
Bill

I just built a 2000sqft barn style pole barn using gambrel trusses.

24 feet wide is about as wide as you can go. Wider and the truss is too tall to to transport. Room upstairs in mine is only 7 ft ceilings.

Roof work is difficult. I did a steel roof. There is a lot of work to finish and trim everything. It took a lot longer than I thought.

You have to plan carefully where you want stairs, etc. You need to plan for wider truss space in those spots. My trusses are on 2 ft centers, but I wanted wider stairs than that.

Overall, I am happy with mine. If you have more questions let me know.

I built my 24x36 with a room in the rafters. I was looking at the Menards trusses too, but my framer talked me in to using trusses from a supplier he used. They were better built than the Menards trusses with 2x10 floor joists instead of 2x8. I ended up with a 15x36 room with 8' ceiling and 4' knee wall. I'm happy with it. Only thing I might have done different is add a couple dormers. Maybe a future project
