I'm actually surprised more Soviet tools don't show up on eBay. There's got to be an assload of Soviet military surplus tools around. Is there eBay.ru? Maybe I need to go buy a shipping container full.

Looks like a Chinese import ratchet, what's that got to do with Russia?

It's posted by a Russian Wikipedia user, and appears to have Cyrillic markings on the tool.

I suppose it could be Chinese produced, but it's the first I've seen with the Cyrillic, and thought it was kind of cool.

Markings appear to be:

First word:

МACTEP (MASTER)

Second word is a bit harder...

First letter is a K (K)
Second is either Л or П ? ("l" or "p")
Third/Fourth looks like Ю (appears to be a single letter in Cyrillic) ("u" as in use)
Fourth looks like Ч ("ch" as in chip)

KPYUCH? KLYUCH?

MACTEP
KПЮЧ

or

MACTEP
KЛЮЧ

Dunno...I'll bounce this off my Ukranian co-worker on Monday. Similar Cyrillic alphabets, apparently.

Edit: Wiktionary shows that KЛЮЧ is Bulgarian:

Noun
ключ (klyuch) m.

1.key
2.switch, circuit breaker
3.keystone
4.(music) clef, key, peg
5.thole, thole-pin
6.(figuratively) key, clue

I'd say the Russians are importing tools from their Chinese communist "comrades" because that ratchet looks identical to import ratchets I've seen for sale at Walmart and other cheap stores here in Canada.I'd say the cyrillic alphabet is just as easy to stamp in as the english one.

Not sure if they are actually made in Russia.

And the wall came a tumblin' down.......

I never thought I'd live to see the day the Iron Curtain would fall, and to think it's 21 years already. It still brings tears to my eyes watching the footage of men sledge hammering the wall with such emotion in their faces. When I mention Soviet era events to the 20 and even 30-somethings I work with, they usually have little or no idea about any of it. Kind of sad, but understandable. Oh well, I like being dinosaur. :)

When the wall fell, a few years later boat loads of surplus stuff became available. I have a Polish army field uniform, and an East German army helmet both acquired in the early 90's. It would be cool to see what type of tools are actually made in Russia today. I can't imagine they'd want to be beholden to their rival China for something that warms the cockles of a Communists heart like tools/factory/production, comrade....:)

If you're a Russian in the kitchen, what are you in the restroom? European.

(sound it out, slowly)

Here's a wrench from Russia, though it has no markings. We bought a deal of russian wrenches and pipe wrenches years ago. We had thousands of them at one time. Now we just have this one wrench. In terms of the quality, I think that we were selling this one for $1.
