Wow I love looking at this thread! I have done quite a few basements but have never done anything that came close to this. Great information and tips and tricks in this build. Thanks

Thanks for the kind words.

nice.

do you re miter the returns so they wrap around ( keeping the same grain, knots etc lined up ) ?
I plan on doing this with 1x12 rough pine and I'm going to wrap them so any knots etc are matched along the edges too

I thought about re mitering them so the knots and grain would be a perfect match, but I would lose a little size by ripping them again, maximum size would be around 3"x5". I am making sure to use the same the pieces that came from the same 1x12, so the grain is similar, even though its not a perfect match. The stain is dark enough, it matches pretty well.

It's been a few weeks since the last update. The woodwork is almost complete, yesterday I started on the stone veneer, something I've never done. I installed half of it yesterday, hopefully tomorrow I can get the other half done, and fill the mortar joints.

Just dropping in. Those beams are absolutely awesome! Love your attention to detail throughout the project. Shame on Photobucket!

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. Photobucket finally caught up with me, pics disappeared about a week ago. When I get everything finished, I'll try to fix the pictures.

I finished the stonework today, I'll get some pics soon.

Just found your thread today, I really like what you've done with the place! :) I only wish I found it before Photobucket got to it, those jerks.

Looking forward to your future updates.

Thanks for the kind words!

In the last picture that I posted, you can see two wood pulleys hanging from the beam that my wife bought at Hobby Lobby, and thought would look good in the basement. I got the idea to wrap a rope around a cord, and convert a kerosene lantern into an electric lamp. I think it turned out ok.

I am finally finished with everything that I am doing for now, next summer I plan to add porcelain tile to the floor. Now I need to find (or build) some furniture that will match what I've done.

Here are some pictures taken with my phone, I still want to get some pictures with a better camera.

Such a neat room! It came out really well.

I still think you should work in set design.

Thank you. Sounds like an interesting career, but not much demand of it in my neck of the woods.

That is one awesome looking basement! Nice job

as I've said before, looks great!

Very very nice job!

Thanks for the comments and encouragement during this project.

It sure has a cozy feeling to it, nice work! I like those tractor seat chairs too, did you make those?

I saw the stools in a Sportsmans Guide catalog, looked like something that would fit right in. I am planning to build a tall table to go with them, still trying to decide on a design. I'm thinking about a table with a whiskey barrel base.

Over the weekend I found another plus for the way I did the ceiling (boards unfastened). My living room floor above the wood stove isn't insulated, and before I installed the basement ceiling, the floor would be nice and warm when I had a fire in the stove. After the ceiling was installed, I wasn't getting as much heat to the living room floor.

I made some 3/4" blocks and propped the edges of the ceiling boards up to allow the warm air to get to the floor above. When I checked the floor with my laser thermometer, the floor temp went up 5-6 degrees.

I'm thinking about ripping some of the ceiling boards a little narrow to allow an 1/8" gap between them, enough to allow air flow, but not enough to be noticeable. For now, propping them up makes a big difference.

383 this is a great remodel. Love what you've done. Given your skills you could build a wood vent to place in your ceiling panel to let the heat escape. Just a thought.

When I started work on my basement, my goal was to have it finished in time for my family Christmas get together. Here is a picture of things set up for 35 people.

One of the gifts for my kids was a dartboard, I built a cabinet for it from scraps from the basement.

I have a hunch this Christmas get-together was one of the most memorable for your family, it looks fantastic in there! Love the dart board cabinet too.

My wife's granddad died a couple of months shy of his 100th birthday. He always loved Harley's, and thought I was ok when I started dating his granddaughter because I had a Harley.

At his funeral they had a slideshow of old pictures, and there was a picture from the late '30's of he and his wife on his Harley. I was able to have a copy of the picture enlarged, and also had a black and white copy made of a picture from our wedding 22 years ago.

I wanted a taller table to go with the tractor seat stools that I have. I found an old whiskey barrel, and made a top from some rough sawn oak.

I made the checkerboard in high school shop class 30+ years ago.

I ****** love it!! I have been wondering how you were going with this. I hope you don't mind but I am going to copy a few ideas and put into my shop after I finish building the house.
Thanks.....

I made another lamp for the basement using an early '50's Briggs & Stratton engine that belonged to my wife's grandad.
