Ryobi Battery Purchase Question

I use my Ryobi 18volt tools a lot, for a variety of things, haven’t had any problems with them and they work well for my DIY, homeowner and various shop usages. In my acquisition of used Ryobi tools I have obtained a number of the older black & yellow (NiCad) batteries. As has been mentioned here before they don’t hold their charge nearly as long as the green (Li) ones do and a couple won’t take a charge at all. I do try to rotate and use all of the batteries equally. I only have 2 of the light green and would like to just get a few more of them. I know I can rebuild the older ones but really don’t like the quick to discharge while unused aspect of them.

I have no issue with good used batteries since it will save me some cash. So I checked eBay recently and saw a lot of P102s, the smaller green (Li) battery, and few of the bigger ones.

Besides less capacity is there something about the P102s batteries that I should watch out for? My smaller Li battery works fine just not for as long as the bigger one.

FWIW, I did a search here for “P102 problem” (and similar terms) and haven’t found anything specifically wrong with them.

Thank you

I would watch HD, Last year I got a bunch (6) of the battery and radio combos for 16 bucks then sold the radios on ebay for 20 without the batteries.

When the P122 two-packs (two P108 Li-Ion 4Ah batteries) are $100, I figure, why deal with used batteries, or battery rebuilds?

^^^^ This. This right here. ^^^

You will never find a better battery deal from Ryobi or any other toolmaker out there. None of the Ryobi kits come with these high-capacity batteries, and they should. The smaller packs are OK for light-power-use tools like drills and impacts, but the batteries above rock for the high-current tools like the circular saw, grinder, sawzall, vacuum, and other such tools. You will never pick up a Ni-Cd battery again after using one of these.

I "lost" one of these batteries up in my attic for an entire year (left it up there when I removed the attic fan, and didn't get around to putting the fan back in for a year, LOL), and it only lost one bar of charge while being up there, even in the heat and cold.

I don't use my tools that often any more, but darned if I'm not tempted to pick up another pair of these batteries every time I walk by them - they are that good and $100 for the pair is a great deal.

Yeah, these days, I will not buy any Ryobi battery unless it is the Lithium One + format, with the 4 amp hour capacity. They are just simply head and shoulders above all previous Ryobi batteries and transform the line of tools instantly! They also last much longer before losing a charge. Wait for an HD deal and go for it, whether the smaller format or full size format Lithium One +. - Paul

For starts, I believe those batteries were only 1300 mah, to begin with. I go a few months with decent NiCd's. Any of the more expensive brands used 2000-2200 mah cells. They can't match lithium but decent cells with much more capacity are a huge improvement in run and storage time. If you want a recommendation, I get my sub C 2000mah NiCd's from Battery Junction. They carry Tenergy brand cells. They come with or without tabs. The up charge for tabs was 10 cents. They have sales sometimes but their prices are reasonable. I have seen no name, generic cells on ebay for really cheap but I have read in too many places that they can be iffy. I am not offering an opinion whether you should rebuild but just some info if you decide to.
