Re: ryobi drill recall

Rando,

Here's the drill (pun inteded). Went up to HD with the drill, they called the Ryobi 800 number they use (and had to wait) then handed the phone to me. The Ryobi person on the other end verified the serial number on the drill, took my address and phone and told me to box it up and leave it on the front porch for FEDEX to pick up in like 10 days. Then, presumeably, a new one will be sent to me.

So I guess you don't have to take it to HD, just call the Ryobi Customer Service line. Sorry, I don't have that number.

Free is my fave price!

Along those same lines, I was just talking to a friend in Ontario and he uses nothing but Ridgid stuff. He says he has a lifetime guarnatee on batteries. He just sends them in and gets a new one. Does anyone know if it works like that down here?

Anyone know which drill they are replacing it with? A P850, I presume?

Hey JC23, I work for the Home Depot out of Chicago, and think I can help a little here.
As autoclassicnut mentioned 800-597-9624 is the Customer Service # at Ryobi.
They are available 10am-7pm Eastern Time Monday through Friday.
You can also visit their website: http://www.ryobitools.com/
Recall details: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml11/11009.html

As to the Ridgid brand power tools, there is a lifetime service agreement currently available.
For cordless tools this includes the batteries. You do have to register your tool within 90 days and provide proof of purchase. For details go here:
http://www.ridgid.com/Tools/Power-Tools/index.htm#/home
I don’t know if this will load from the forum, but this is the direct .pdf service agreement link:
http://ridgid.com/Manuals/RidgidLSA.pdf

I hope this helps!

I just called them. After waiting on hold for 5 minutes thye asked for the model and serial number. They then told me to box it up and they would have it picked up in about two weeks.

Now to call my Dad and get my other drill....

Thanks HDNewf,

I called the recall hotline today as my packaged drill was not picked up on the 25th like they said. Nor was it picked up the next day. They said there was a miscommunication and it will be picked up on the 28th. So I guess we’ll see.

As for that Ridgid warranty deal, I may have to look into that.

Hi Guys
I just wanted to add my thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention. When I called RYOBI today they asked how I found out. I told them GJ and after a long pause the return process started. Mine gets picked up on Nov 9th.
Thanks again for the early Christmas present

Well, FEDEX DID pick mine up today so it's in motion.

I'll report when I see a new one.

When I called to get mine replaced they told me the model number but I was in the car ... didn't write it down and can't remember now. But I remember them saying it was the current model version of that drill which I think is the P850.

After talking to these guys and thinking about it. The Ryobi representative didn't give me an address to put on the box. Did they give one to anyone else?

FedEx will provide the label with address, make sure you get a copy of the call tag, this is your only record of the shipment.

Also, I would suggest to all that you call a week before your scheduled pick-up date to confirm. I originally called 3 weeks ago, gave the drill information and received a pick-up date of Nov. 9th. I called today to confirm this date and they had NO record of my original call and no record of the scheduled pick-up date. I had to have them schedule a new date, now one week later!

Just got my replacement drill today from Ryobi. Took 12 days from the time Fedex picked up the defective one. I like the one hand chuck on the new one.

Got mine today. Not bad as they picked it up 13 days ago. Got a new P204 just like pic above.

Noticed a bunch of differences. The bubble level is now built into the body instead of being removeable.

Where as there were TWO spring steel holders for bits on the uppper body, now there is only one and it's on the lower flange above where the battery snaps in.

That flange around the base of the drill (where it meets the battery) is shorter in length and has been streamlined in its design.

Overall, the barrell is shorter in length AND at a slightly more shallow angle. It's a lot closer to 90 degrees than the older model. And by older model, I mean the P200.

Overall on the body, it seems to be a bit smaller or more compact. That's nice!

Also, the reversing buttons are larger so that should be nice. Another creature comfort is a bigger area for holding the chuck tight. Yowza!

The weight feels the same so maybe they haven't cut any metal out of it.

It also looks like the magnetic pad is a touch bigger.

As it's new, it's got a spindle/stator brake. We'll see how long that lasts.

I'll give a report when I've got some laps on it. In the meantime, here are some pics.

And good luck on yours!

My pickup date is the 17th- great early holiday gift.

The drill I have came in one of the ryobi super sets bought from HD in late 2002. Did anyone else get theirs that way or did you buy them individually?

I got mine with the kit, too. It was the oldest of my two drills. Worked fine all these years. Although I think the circ saw is dying. It doesn't cut near as good as it used to. Even with a new blade. Lack of power/torque. Anyone else see this condition?

But now, I may have a new problem. When I plugged in a batt and threw a driver bit in my replacement drill, I noticed it was running out. So when I get done with this post, I'll be calling Ryobi again.

I'll keep ya posted

Yea, mine came in a big kit as well, but I got it earlier than that.

What do you mean by "running out"?

Somehow, the main spindle of the drill gun is bent or out of alignment. It's like pointing your finger straight out and then making a big circle with that finger but keeping your hand still.

When I stuck the Dewalt driver tool in the chuck and turned it on, it wobbled like it was bent. So if I were to use a drill bit, it would cut bigger than its size.

The longer the bit or tool I put in the chuck, the more 'run out' I will get. If I use one of my 12 inch long drills like for making a hole for an electrical wire, imagine the size of the hole.

Update on the replacement drill that is running out.

I finally got to call Ryobi. The tech didn't know how to handle this problem and checked with someone further up the food chain. I was instructed to take the drill to the nearest service center for repairs. They gave me the names and locations of the centers in my area. As it turned out, one was in the city where I live. I'll be going there today and will report in with the results.

My first two Ryobi drills were bought second hand with a charger and a couple of batteries. Since then I've added the new lithium set (a couple years ago). The big batteries will outlast two or three of the older standard ones but they are ~$85.00 :wtf:. I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger on several new batteries so I just charge the old ones and save the lithiums for the circular and reciprocating saws.

They picked up the first of the two HP1802M drills yesterday. Number two is at my Dad's house. I'll pick it up at Thanksgiving.

That brings up a good point. Did it look like a refurb or return? I assume these units are brand new, but who knows.

Who cares?

The one that I sent in had the clutch destroyed. If the new one works I'm money ahead.

Well, I do, for one. My drill was perfectly fine. If I get a bum one in return, I wouldn't be happy.

The one they sent me was brand new or if it was a refurb, looked brand new. I'm leaning towards brand new cuz the spindle brake worked really good. The two I've had had thiers working well when new and then kinda wore down. That is to say, they didn't have that torque that kinda snaps when you let go of the trigger.

I'll take it to the service center next week. Didn't have time this week.

Hey bmwpower, I work for the Home Depot out of Chicago. This morning I called Larry at the Ryobi recall center. He assured me that the replacement drills are new and definitely not refurbished or used.

Took the new drill gun I got from Ryobi from the recall to the authorized repair shop today. Luckily, it was in my city and close by. If you remember right, the new one I got was running out from the get go. (see posts 30, 32 & 33)

The nice lady at the shop said they would have to call in to see about the warranty issue and, basically, who will pay to have this gun fixed or repaired. Right away, I have a chip on my shoulder as the one I sent to Ryobi did not run out. I'm not gonna get my knickers in a twist at this point so I'll let it play out and see what happens.

Word of advice to those getting new guns, check them right away - as soon as you get them - for run out and everything else.

This could get ugly...
