While visiting a local antique shop this afternoon I came across an old machinists' tool box(5 drawer plus the top)with an S-K plaque attached to the front and remnants of the old S-K green paint. It is actually in very good shape and looks like it could have been made by Kennedy(the old square top style with no sliders). They are asking $68 for it which doesn't sound too bad. I was going to buy it but I have WAY too many tool boxes already. If anyone is interested I can take some pictures of it tomorrow. Would probably cost an arm and a leg(and a left testicle)to ship anywhere though.Let me know if anyone is interested.

Well seeing as how nobody seemed interested in it I bought it this afternoon. It is actually in great shape and has most of the original paint on it intact albeit a bit discolored.I am pretty sure that it was manufactured by Kennedy although the drawer stops aren't like anything I've seen before on a Kennedy. The small drawers have a single spring clip on the outboard side that is disengaged by inserting a screwdriver and lifting it.The two big drawers have a clip on each side.
As soon as I finish cleaning it and re-lining the drawers I will post some pictures.

First old SK box that I've seen like that . . . strange to have both green and brown.

Pretty good buy OP for the money as almost any Kennedy or SK box in that style seems to go for $50 to $75 at an estate sale or auction.

That's a nice box Safariknut. I found one just like it last summer which was the first one I had come across. I have yet to fill it as I have the same problem as you...too many boxes. Ed.

Saw one around here for $75. Like you, I have too many laying around, and don't have enough SK to fill it to do it justice.

I'm no expert on Kennedy boxes but my 526 has a round edge on the lid where the front turns into the top. Your box has a square edge there but that might just be a different vintage characteristic. Your box also has reinforcing panels along the top lid on the inside and my Kennedy has none. The other difference is the tiny angle strip that runs up and down vertically on the corners like a mini strip of angle iron. My Kennedy doesn't have them, it's just finished flush. The latch is more elaborate in shape but then my model is the wider one which has 2 simpler latches and a key lock in the middle.

You can see some detail shots at my Kennedy restoration post here if it helps - #1035

I got one but it was painted black. But I got the key for it and it was only $5. It's currently full of SK tools that I need to sort out the duplicates and see what I'm missing in my set.

Here is a picture of an old Kennedy box(one of several)that I own. This one does not have slides in it or are the drawers easily removable. The lock tabs that retain the drawers have to be driven down with a drift punch to release them. This one has additional drawers but the style of the inner lid is the same as the S-K.
