This thread is a hoot. Love it!

I used to work on VW's back in the 70's. Somehow I thought I'd own one my entire life but haven't had one in years (still have my copy of John Muir's book though). Left VW for the Porsche dark side I guess. Love that bus though. Beautiful.

fredlangva, Welcome to GJ and the Hideout. You have already encounter the influence GJ has on our shop plans. We can start with the best ideas in our mind for what we want and then we hit another post that has some cool ideas. Then another and then another... And then our plans change. But that is not a bad thing as every idea we decide to include in our own place makes it that much better. Jack's and Dave's threads are part to blame/credit for how my place is turning out. I still have no idea what I am going to end up with for my workbench wall. I just keep surfing and making notes. I'm glad my place can offer some inspiration to your place.

ManxRacer: VW's have always had a soft spot for many people and bring back many memories. My family has owned this bus since about the time I was born and I can't just get rid of it without restoring it. Some have wanted me to keep it the vintage patina it is, but there is too much rust to keep anything dry inside, let alone to affect its structural integrity at highway speeds. So a restoration is in the works.

Progress, or lack there of...
Work has been slow in the Salt Life Hideout recently. Too many deadlines at work have made me bring work home in the evenings and last couple weekends. This weekend was a neighborhood garage sale that I was able to get rid of two washer/dryer pedestals that I have been tripping over. And yesterday involved replacing the headliner in my '99 Olds 88. It didn't turn out perfectly, but will be much better than a ripped and sagging headliner when I try to trade it in. Which brings up the rest of my not-so-spare time - car shopping. I've narrowed it down, now just need to get the Olds looking and running the best it can for the best trade in value.

But, on the bright side, work on the Hideout must continue so I can have room to park a third car inside. Hopefully I can cut some wood this weekend.

The floor is looking great man. I really like the ladder rack idea... will definitely use that once we get a garage.

Wingnut,

As I was driving home tonight, I was behind a white SUV with a Salt Life sticker on it. My razor sharp mind went fron DUH to hey, that's a guy on GJ!!! And I thought you don't run into those too often. But then I remembered lurking on your thread and remembered you weren't from up here. So when I came home, I punched 'Salt Life' into the gallery search and destroy machine and got yer thread. It didn't take long to see where the name came from as when I originally read this one, I glossed over the name to get to the good stuff.

So thanks for getting me all excited for nothing - that is, till I got updated on all yer cool ideas. Keep up the good work and I'll keep watching for that logo with some FL plates on it. You can come up for some of our snow. It's only fair. We come down there for the sun...

Jeff,

How is the car shopping going? Things have slowed down at our house as well...harvest is in full swing, Halloween is wrapped up, planning in earnest for the holidays, and going to an OSU football game on SAT. Are you looking for a daily driver?

Wait, car shopping?

You've already got another car! It's just waiting for a motor and windows and paint and chrome and some other completely minor things. Just get things together this weekend and you won't have to waste any more time at the dealership.

It's probably good I'm not a motivational speaker huh? :D:D:D

Thanks guys for Rattling my cage. Life just hasn't slowed down here at the Hideout at all in the month of October. It seems the whole month has involved too many deadlines at work that made me bring work home for many of the evenings and weekends, two quick trips to Dallas/Denton to inspect another project, Mother-in-law in the hospital, brother diagnosed with cancer, Halloween comes and goes and now its November. Unfortunately the garage and GJ have been put on the back burner recently. Hopefully the next couple of weeks will lighten up considerably and allow some time to play. Thanksgiving may involve a trip to Dothan to see my brother, but his plans for now are to get out to Kansas City to see his son and wife that just moved out this summer. We hope he can go.

The car shopping continues. My 1999 Olds 88 is a good strong car, but it is starting to need repairs that are more costly than I am willing to put into the car. It was a hand-me-down from my MIL in 2005 with only 12k miles on it. Now with 165k and only getting 20-22 mpg, I am ready to move up to something more comfortable and better mpg's. My desk is 32 miles from home, so any help in mileage will be good. The Bus will be another set of wheels, but for a DD, I need to be able to run across the state for meetings without worries. I should be getting an e-mail tomorrow with the formal quote of what we have agreed to and then I just go to the dealer and place the order. At least that is the way this no-haggle system should be working and I will post more on how it actually turns out soon.

A1an: Thanks for the support. I hope you are settling into your 'new/year old' 3-car. Give a call if you need any help or just to throw some ideas around.

Ole_Red: I stole the ladder idea from someone else here on GJ, so feel free to take it and make it yours. I still need to add the spacer that shopnut suggested. I know I need to get the ladder down for the Christmas lights in a couple weeks, so maybe I can hit it then. BTW, I'm going to have to follow that Stude project of yours. Sweet project.

JC23: Sorry to disappoint you about it not being me up there. The original Salt Life started in Jacksonville Beach and now is basically around the world. I do have a SL sticker on my car and I've thought about having a sign company make me a 'Hideout' sticker that I can add to it. Then you would know it is me. As for the snow, I'm game. We went to Asheville after Christmas last year and got to enjoy their 8" of Christmas Day snow. It was my girl's first time to see snow and my first time for an extended period. It was old hat for my wife from Chicago. We may have to do it again.

flybefree: Thanks for asking about the car shopping. I will add more about the process I found soon. Harvest season is one thing that I have not been involved with at all. That is a lot of work and I thank you for doing it for me. The GeoHangar Bunker Barn will be there when you get back to it. Your floor looks awesome. Congrats on the OSU win this weekend. It always makes it better when you go to a game to actually win it.

Red Leader: Thanks for rubbing it in. I should have been on the Bus all month. Next weekend is our big local VW weekend. Actually one of the biggest in the state. Saturday will the Bulli Brigade down at DeSoto park in St Pete. Its a Bus Only show. Then Sunday will be the big Pasco Bug Jam up in Dade City. It is open to anything with a VW logo or engine. It was there several years ago that I took the shots of the inspiration for my project. Maybe this year there will be something better. I hope this week goes fast...

Jeff, sorry to hear about your brother, as well as anything else that has been stressful. I was in a similar place when the wife was in the hospital w/ a lot of unknowns. I hope/pray that life will take a turn for the best for you, not just so you can get out in the garage, but that you can get a break. Any posts/updates here are just icing on the cake.

On a forum we all really only get to see a slice of the pie with other folks, so I appreciate being able to hear more about whats going on behind the scenes, since I consider you and some other guys on here my friend. Feel free to call anytime if you need a break and want to 'talk shop'

Jeff,

Did you get any good photos of the bugmania? I second Dave's comments...we just like to hear about what's going on, you don't always have to wow us with ladder storage systems and such. Sorry to hear about the illnesses in the family.

Well I'm still searching for a garage to use that idea in... maybe by then you will have it perfected!

Thanks for the words on the Stude. Im hoping to get it turned over in the next couple of weeks. Fingers crossed that it will break loose. Long term goal is to make it our second car/daily driver. :bounce:

Thanks for the thoughts and support. I am privileged to have met some new friends here on GJ that can share in the excitement of finishing a project in the garage, new or old tools, and new babies and even the tougher times that life can throw our way. It's just when it hits so close to home that we need to take a look at priorities and what really matters in life. I just keep saying my prayers for my wife, my family and my friends.

This didn't intend to have a downer update, just a note saying that speed bumps in life have slowed my progress and my postings down this month. We will persevere.

Dave, Thanks for the sincere thoughts. I will take you up on the offer some time.

Shaun, Thanks also. The family may be taking more time until we can get the health back in line. Once the warranty ends, it is any body's guess what part of the body will decide to misbehave next. Now Mrs. W needs another MRI. (We are on first name basis at the radiology lab) BTW, The Big Jam is coming up this weekend. (Mental note, charge camera battery)

Ole Red, Thanks. We are keeping our heads high and moving forward. The garage will come in its own time. For the Stude, if it won't break loose, I've heard that pouring Marvel Mystery Oil in the spark plug holes and let it set a while should break the cylinders loose. Good Luck.

Jeff - I hope this comes through for you. You say "Life" happens, but the VW shows would be a perfect distraction from your "life" that's happening right now. It sounds like you need it!

And work may be busy for you but just be glad you are working - many aren't and are struggling to make ends meet because of it. I keep telling myself that too.

Hang in there buddy. We're all here if you need us.

Thanks, Shopnut. I agree 100% and am very grateful to still be in business during these hard times. Many architectural firms have had to close over the past few years and we just keep tightening our belt. I have never complained about too much work.

I will be spending some quality time this weekend with many classic air cooled VW's. There are many on The Samba that are already Florida-bound. I'm hoping to meet a few other local GJ members at the Bug Jam on Sunday.

Right now, I'm making my shopping list and then need to request a grant from the Minister of Finance...

Weekend Update

I made it to Bulli Brigade 18 on Saturday with one of my daughters and saw some great looking buses. I came to one and said 'That is the reason we came' and she couldn't understand what inspiration is and that you know it when it just appears in front of you. Well, out of the 125+ registered buses and more in the parking lot, this one from Panama City is the one that I fell in love with for the stance, wheels, finish and color. It really looked nice.

He had wide tires around on this, but I feel they are a little small.

There was also a very clean double cab that came down from New York. He has a nice engine/****** combo and said he was cruising at 75-80 coming down. Can you just imagine having a split window bus come up behind you and pass you on the expressway? :shocking: We have had ours up to 60, but it was going downhill in the Rockies.

I had to get her in one shot just to prove she went with me...

I mention the stance because I really like the lowered non-stock look of the customs. I met a guy who sells lowering kits and I realized that it would only cost me about $400 to lower my bus with minimal changes. But if I wanted bigger and wider tires, then I would need to also narrow the suspension and add to the cost. We'll have to see where the budget is is when we get to that point.

Here is a nicely done stock restoration. This is an 11-window, just like mine, with the same bumpers with overriders on it. This would be easier to restore as I have all the original parts, but I want mine lowered.

Here are a couple more attachments of some other cool buses. I just couldn't resist a show of the motorized stool. And the Harley bus even has it's own workbench inside. The blue bus was in Hot VW's about a year ago. Enjoy...

Very nice pictures. I agree the lowered look does it. Near my moms house in north Texas there is a man that has a 21 window that has been there since I was a kid. It broke down in the mid 80's and he parked it in his driveway. About 10 years ago he pushed it into the garage. I can still see it through the windows. May have to swing by there on Thanksgiving to see if he is ready to sell. I had asked him in the mid 90's and he said he was going to restore it. I imagine after seeing those your daughter will start to push you to restore yours for her?

Jeff very nice shots . I will have to admit as much as I like the 21 window deluxe busses the 2 tone gray panel van is my favorite mostly due to the fact you just dont see many of the older panels .

I'm from the camp that thinks that everything should be lowered. Well, except maybe 4X4's:).

Jeff - glad you had some fun! Those buses look great. I like the look of the blue one too.

If you start doing little things on the bus, before you know it, it will be done:thumbup:

Thanks, Dave for kicking me into gear. I owe you one  I had these photos in my computer, but needed the motivation to get them posted. And this slacker was just about ready to send in that application to Procrastinator's Anonymous... Maybe next month I will send it in.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but as I keep going, the light looks more like my headlights reflecting off the back of a trailer ahead. The light just isn't getting any closer.

Hideout and Family Update
New car has been ordered and should be here within 45 days (out of the 90 day estimated delivery). When I get new ride, I will post about how I used Overstock.com to get what I feel is the best price I can on the ride I want. This does bring along some urgency to the Salt Life Hideout as the parking space for the 3rd car in the garage is currently filled with plywood for the cabinet projects. These projects now have a deadline, so stay tuned.

My brother is back to work full time following chemo and some radiation treatments. Actually the chemo continues. He has had consultation on stem cell transplant treatment, but isn't convinced it is what he needs. We are thankful for his progress and continue to pray for his recovery.

Mrs. Wingnut ended up having an operation for female roto-rooter surgery the week before Christmas. Prayers were answered when the cyst that was observed turned out to be a fluid sack and no cancer was found anywhere. We thank the Lord daily for this blessing.

Now for the Hideout progress, if you can call it that. But it did involve making sawdust and using RL’s black spray paint!

Ladder Rack Spacer
If you recall a few pages back, when I put up my ladder rack, it was too short to provide adequate clearance to get the ladder into the second end. The ladder scraped the ceiling at the far end to get the near end over the bar.

122

Shopnut gave me the idea of just adding a spacer. So, since I had to have the ladder down for the Christmas lights, I decided not to put the ladder away until I could fix it. So I did.

Here is what I stared with

188

I removed the racks and then cut a 1x3 to size for each. I wanted them to be smaller than the 1x4 of the rack to give a shadow line and not look like a patch (so don’t tell anyone that it is)

189

To center the spacers, I drew center lines on all pieces

190

Clamped them in place on the center lines

191

Marked where the holes would go

192

Then removed and drilled out the holes

193

Painted them black with some really cool Red Leader Flat Black rattle can paint

194

And installed

195

That extra 3/4" on both ends was all it needed to get more clearance for the ladder to fit. Thanks Shopnut for the spacer idea. I owe you another cold one.

196

All is good in the Salt Life Hideout now. At least in the areas of the photos that are visible. I need to clear out a bunch of stuff to get to the plywood on the floor. I can still see the Bus, but barely. All I need is time at home without work type stuff so I can get it all done.

That is the update. And, Thanks to Shaun, I now have one of Red Leader’s 3M/ScotchBrite EXL polishing wheel. It looks really Awesome sitting on my workbench.

First and foremost, sounds like encouraging news on the family front!

It's good to see the hideout gettin' a little attention too. Funny how the simplest solutions are the ones that go right over our heads!

Tell me about your cord reel. My latest work involves my worm drive, jigsaw etc. and I'm really tired of extension cords. So.........I'm ready to buy one. I've been looking and reading reviews and can't make up my mind. One review will say the thing is awesome and the next one says it *****. My budget is around $100.

Okay, no more sinking to the back pages. Mo-ment-um:).

Paul, Thanks for the thoughts.

The cord reel is the HF 40' cord with triple plug. I might have bought it with a coupon from Inside Track. I believe I only paid less than $60 for it. Maybe I used the HF price match to their website plus a 20% coupon ($56).

It works great as an extension cord. I've found the whole family using it at one time or another. My only complaint is that there is nothing in the rewind system to layer the cord. If I don't do it slowly and guide it from one side to the other, the cord will roll up on top of itself and jam. Then I pull it out further and do it again. This is my only dislike of the cord reel, but not enough to spend over $150 to get a reel with a better rewind system.

I also have the HF 30' reel over the bus and workbench side of the shop. Since that cord is flat, I've never noticed a problem with rewinding the cord. It also has 3-plugs and works great.

Hey Wingnut65,

I’m glad to hear about your brother - although I’m sure he still has a tough road ahead of him. I bet he feels much better knowing he has your support throught it all. (That reminds me - I need to give my brother a call)

Also glad to hear about Mrs. Wingnut. Mrs. Shopnut had a similar scare about a year ago in the form of a double whammy (top and bottom parts). She got through it with a clean bill of health too and now she’s on a semi-annual check-up routine. So I guess 2011 was not the greatest year for either her or me, but we’re hoping 2012 is a bit more trouble free on the health front. We wish the same to you and yours.

Keep your head up! Like FBF, I'm looking forward to seeing that new car.

Great update Jeff.

And wait...you ordered a car from overstock.com? You can do that?

It just sounded funny because the way it was written was like "so we just ordered our new winter coat from overstock.com" but just replace winter coat with car:D

I'm honored to have a spray paint named after me. Even more so considering it it the $.97 stuff...it knows I'm cheap:lol_hitti

Hi WingNut -- Great looking garage you've got going there. I've seen your posts quite often and your Racedeck installation helped make up my mind and place the order when they had thier Black Friday discount and free shipping special. I'm still a ways away from putting it in, but looking forward to it. I'm planning on a similar pattern to yours...Beige, black and the aluminum color. In some of your posts it looked like you put an underlayment of some kind and painted the floor under part of it. Do you mind briefly going back over what you did under the RD? Sorry to hear about the health issues your family has been through lately, but it sounds like things are getting better and you have your faith and family (and GJ!) to help you through. Glad to see your recent progress and the cool pics of the VWs. Fine work sir....Keep it up!

Thanks for stopping by, Speed. Thanks for the support, but my life hasn't involved Fire Departments, Police or crawling out a sun roof. Wow, you have been through a lot to get this far. Your place is coming along great!. I need to go back and read yours all the way through. I agree with TB66 on the flashing concern. And congrats on pulling the trigger on the RaceDeck. Mine sat in boxes for months before it all went down. I actually put one parking space down right out of the box to see how we liked it. We did.

And thanks for asking the flooring question. I've been wanting to do a Shopnut inspired index on the front page, but never have done it. Now that I have my Round-Tuit (thanks to mdbeck1), I will get it done.

I documented the whole process for the RaceDeck Floor Installation starting in Post #188 and continuing in Post #205. Your question is in post 205. But so you don't have to search, 2/3rds of the garage floor was painted right after we moved in. Never got to the third bay before I brought the bus home. Found GJ when looking for floor ideas. One thing lead to another and I realized my floor was a piece of the whole garage puzzle. Thus, the Salt Life Hideout was born. I heard about using an underlayment to lessen the echo of walking on plastic tiles. It hadn't bothered me in the areas where we had the tile down, but didn't want to have the 'What if' nagging me if I didn't try it. I shopped L’s and HD for best price per square foot and ended up installing 2 layers of ‘Weed Block Pro’ from HD’s. I'm pleased with the results.

And, don't worry about taking long to get the floor down, I still have 2 boxes and some trim work to finish. No sense in working on it now when the weather is perfect when I can procrastinate until the heat of the summer. Actually, it is that Life thing that keeps getting in the way.

Thanks WingNut....makes perfect sense now. Somehow I missed the two stage installation. I guess I thought the pattern just changed itself...doh!! Thanks for taking the time to point me to the post and for documenting so completely.

SpeedinLemon, no problem. Your question made me realize that I need to go back and re-read MY thread to remember what everyone has suggested.

A1an, I've been waiting on saying anything about the new car until the ship comes in, but I guess I could give a teaser about it. I have ordered a White, 4-Door 5-Seat Sports Car that is smaller than my 1999 Olds 88 and gets 30-31 MPG, much better than my current 22-24. Photos are below...

Cars at Overstock.com…

Yes, Overstock.com does have a service that offers cars at a discount over the sticker and invoice prices. A friend at Church told us about it and I am convinced this is the place to start searching for the best price. At the top of Overstock's home page, there are tabs just under their logo - 'Shopping', 'Cars', 'Travel' and 'Insurance'. I don't know how the other ones work, but the Cars one is working for me.

Overstock allows a search for New or Used cars by all makes and models by zip code. The availability and pricing are based on the corporate owned dealers in your area. In September and October that I was pricing, it was all based on the 2011 models and they were offering $1,300 below invoice. That was about $4,500 below sticker! (end of the model year liquidation) By the time I was convinced I knew what I wanted and I was willing to commit to it, I bit the bullet and filled out the e-mail contact info for the dealer to get in touch with me. That was 6 pm on a Saturday night. At 10:45 Sunday morning, I got a call from AutoNation Direct to confirm my order request so they can search their dealers to find the car I wanted. They would call me and let me know when they found it and when it would be shipped to my local AutoNation dealer (which we have 2 of Brand Z nearby).

To go back a minute, I had started my whole search with Consumer Reports Car Buying Guides to narrow it down to a CR Recommended car that is good on gas mileage and looks pretty cool (Hey, I've got standards!) Our local dealer had a Model X loaner that we had for a good part of a week while Mrs W's car was in the shop. She is 5'-3" and I'm 5'-10" and we determined that week that memory seat settings were very important to my next car. Since it is a sporty car, I sit lower for head room and she sits forward and higher to be able to see.

Unfortunately, Model X from Brand Z does not come standard with memory seats. But it is available in a luxury package that must be ordered. Since my car still works fine (except for no A/C, and leaks for oil, washer fluid and power steering fluid) I could live with a 90 day order from the factory to get the options I want.

I waited until December to place the order in hopes of having more 2012 models in inventory across the nation and also taking advantage of the end of the year sales. Unfortunately again, they do not sell a car on an order. I only pay when it is delivered. So, whatever sales are on at that time, will count towards my sale.

My AutoNation Sales Rep searched the Country and found nothing with the option packages I want on a Model X car in the entire country. So the order was placed December 15. I have 30 more days for the approximate 90 day delivery. On the bright side, I may have the only car like it in the Country built in the factory with my bells and whistles!

The sales reps at AutoNation Direct have been Awesome! They e-mail or call periodically to make sure I as still interested or with updates. They did mention that they offer this car buying service to Overstock.com, USAA, Costco and AAA, to mention a few. I did try it through AAA and got to the same car selection page.

That is the basics of how I got to where we are now.
And, here are the Teasers of the Trial Size Model X that we had...(AKA, Loaner)

Looks Lexusy. ;)

We just ordered a 2012 Yaris SE that is supposed to be here within three months. Didn't know about the route you took. We started with Costco which ended up not creating much of a saving at all. Ended up through AMEX which saved us quite a bit with a deal $950 under invoice. Pretty happy considering there isn't much room to talk price on the lower price cars AND we still got to custom order exactly what we wanted.

Congrats on the order. 29/35 is pretty good mileage. I didn't know AmEx had a car buying program. Maybe I need to check into it before we finish the deal.

I see that Overstock doesn't offer much at all on the Yaris. I agree on the limited savings when their profit is limited. $950 under invoice is a lot less than paying sticker if you didn't do your homework first. Good work.

Nice guess BTW.

OH NO - Not another one! :wtf: (RL - you're creating a bunch of thread-teasing monsters here :))

I'll have to investigate the alternative car buying options the next time around. Thanks for sharing.
