Jeff,

Once you are ready to start learning, I would humbly submit, you start with making a plumb bob...it's really easy, can be done in a short afternoon, and leaves you with somehthing useful for your tool box. Mrpete222's videos 49-51 show you how to make one, and will teach you how to do several basic operations on the lathe you will use time and time again...plus there is all kinds of room for error, which I know I need. Anyhow, I would be more than happy to help you get started via skype or something. I am a complete newb, but I can make a mean plumb bob.

Thanks Shaun for the idea of making a plumb bob. I have a couple now, but they are the old hexagonal type and not a cool hand-turned shape.

Thanks also for the tutorial offer. I may take you up on it. Right now I'm going through the 'Lathe Operations' Army Correspondence Course that shopnut mentioined. I didn't know there were so many different types of lathes. I thought they were either big or small, metal or wood, working or broken... I still have a lot to learn before I get it up and running.

Jeff,
OK, I will be happy to help via skype or facetime. I spent weeks reading up prior to making my first chips...exactly the stuff you are reading now. For me, the method I have chosen, is to get a general working knowlege of how the machine works as a whole...focusing on safety. Then I pick out a single operation, such as facing, the first step for many lathe projects...then I study that operation, watch the video, make sure I have the right tool (ebay set of small lathe tools will come with the 5 most common tools and will be all you need for the easy stuff). THEN I practice the operation on a piece of delrin rod (cheap on ebay) the same diameter of the piece I will be working. THEN I chuck up the work piece, use the online littlemachineshop.com speed calculator to set my speeds...and then make the first cut on brass or aluminium 6061.

Anyhow, not exaclty the best way to learn a skill like running a lathe...but I just don't know any other way to learn this stuff living in suburbia. I don't know anybody personally that can run a lathe/mill/shaper...and I intend to change that.

Thanks, Shaun. I'm not familiar with delrin, but see that is reasonable enough to be disposable. I do have some wood turning experience on a Shopsmith, but this is new territory now. I know I can turn wood on this, but the delrin will use the same tools and react more closely to metal turning.

In the meantime, I have cleaned off the workbench to put this on when I get another strong back to help. Also at that time, I'd like to have help lifting the drill head into place. My Dad's notes say it weighs 75 lbs. So having help lifting it over my head to get up on the lathe would be nice. But, when I removed the head, there was surface rust all over the bear steel on the base. I would have expected a gasket of some sort to prevent rust. So, planning ahead to have everything ready when cheap labor is available, last night I cleaned the mating surface on the base.

Before:

After:

Also, as noted by shopnut, the base is still in the trunk of my car and this was well after dark working with a flashlight and the trunk light. Now that I look at the pix, I see that I still have more work to do before I am ready.

And this brings up the question of the day, what should I coat the surface with to prevent rust in the future. I'm sure my dad coated it with oil, but over the past 22 years, that has evaporated enough to rust. What will last - white lithium grease, Boeshield...?

Jeff,

I use Boeshield, has done a great job on my tools...google will show you some more info of course...has great staying power in my environment.

Delrin machines more like metal than wood, will allow you to more pecisely turn something to a predetermined diameter and give you confidence in your ability to make a part to a correct dimension. For Shaun, wood doesn't reliably and repeatedly turn...crank in .015 and the part may only shed .002 one day and .030 the next depending on grain etc. Delrin is not as precise as metal, but it is cheaper and light enough that if I made a mistake it didn't break my little CHICOM lathe.

Shaun

PS Of course I am a complete novice so please PROs out there set me straight!

Just a note, I spoke with rickairmedic yesterday (Houston we have a problem) and he is fine. They survived the recent tornadoes in Kentucky with minimal property damage. But they do have relatives that lost their house while they were hunkered down in the basement.

Right now Rick still doesn't have any power or cable and hasn't been able to get on internet. Cell phone did work and his business is keeping busy. He said he would be back soon when recovery settles down.

He also mentioned going up to an area where a tornado when through that was half mile wide and 50+ miles long. He said there was nothing left standing in the path. He realizes he could be so much worse off and feels very fortunate.

And I will add that I think we all are grateful for what we have and know it can all be taken in an instant, including our lives and those of loved ones.

Rick, we are praying for you and your family!

RaptorDuner, I'll be glad to give you a ride after I pick it up next weekend. You do have a good eye for details. I didn't give much away in the photos, so you must really know the car. Actually, start a thread and tell us more about your place and I'll see what I have you may like. BTW, if you really want to get away from your snow, I really want to learn how my welder works. I'm planning on needing it this summer on the bus. Thanks for joining in the fun, Jason.

TB66, I agree. Hadn't seen Rick on the playground lately, especially when the lathe got revealed. Thought for sure he would have jumped in for that. So, I had to look him up to make sure everything was OK.

Actually wasn't familiar with that model at all but some manufacturers have a "style" I recognize. The picture of the mirror was too much info.

As for the shop, not until I have it looking presentable. Too many back to back to back projects.

Negative Hook Carbide Blades. Cool! Red Leader, it is amazing how much I learn by hanging around you. I know of the hazards and will do whatever I can to make it safe. There is no reason to have a cool tool sitting in the shop that someone is too scared to use. Respect it, yes!

Likewise!

Now I'll also need to find a negative hook blade. But mine will have to be 14" with a 3/4" arbor:headscrat

The price of obscurity:D

Years ago someone gave me a 5" or 6" thick stack of old saw blades. I gave some to the neighbor (he's got a shopsmith and I think they use a 3/4" or 1" arbor) but.... Let me take a look. I might have a few with 3/4" arbors. If I have some we'll work something out.

Oh, and they will be OLD.... I've had them for over 10 years and they were old when I got them. So if you don't want them I'll understand.

I've been missing the Salt Life. How goes?:)

Funny you should ask... Busy weekend. Looks like we both got new toys for our shop. But mine cannot compare to your New Red Star!

Got a call Friday morning that my car was finally in, so we picked it up Friday night. (Order was placed on 12/15/11, car was built on 2/14/12. Sweet!) It had 6 miles on it as we drove it away.

234

But Saturday the car was left in the Salt Life Hideout as we went to Lakeland for the Sun-N-Fun airshow. I wore my Garage Journal T-shirt, but didn't have anybody stop me or comment on it. Thought I might have bumped into another GJ'er roaming around.

Here's a couple shots that I got on my phone. I have many more good shots on my Nikon that I will download and post.

TP-51 Crazy Horse. A flight in this is on my Bucket List.

FiFi, the only B-29 in flying condition.

And Jim Tobul's recently restored F4U-4 Corsair "Korean War Hero". We spent some time talking with Grady, one of the support crew for the plane. This plane has a great history and it was great to see it back flying after a tragic accident with his father flying. More info here: Korean War Hero

Now with the new ride, the Finance Minister wants to know when it will be able to start parking in the garage. Looks like I have some cabinet projects to attack this week...

Thanks mdbeck1 for the generous offer to Red Leader. It is great to see friendships build and willingness to help others.

Thanks Shoottx for posting the link. I see some items that I could use also. Now it is here, it will be easy for me to find again.

Saturday was our annual pilgrimage to the Sun 'n Fun fly-in in Lakeland where we spent the day with some close friends from Miami.

Here are a few shots that I took during the day. The Warbird show started with clear skys, but the clouds came in and some light rain delayed the show a 1/2 hour or so. I just wish it was sunny for FiFi and the Thunderbirds.

BTW, I was shooting with a Nikon D5000 with a 55-200 Zoom.

Six Yaks and a T-34

FiFi is the only B-29 still in flying condition. First the beauty pass...

Then the bombing run...

And, all bombing runs must have Pyro

A C-47 Gooney Bird/Dakota

How about having your own OV-1 Mohawk?

or a T-28 Trojan? But I like the trainer paint scheme best.

Gene Soucy in his Show Cat

Kyle Franklin was awesome as the drunkard who got past security and took off perpendicular to the runway. Funny act and a very talented pilot!

Masters of Disaster continue to fly with John Mohr and Skip Stewart in an approaching pass...

USAF Thunderbirds with their F-16 Falcon

Due to the low clouds, they performed the low level bomb burst...

Knife edge pass at 500+ knots... I love my Nikon!

Jim Tobul's recently restored F4U-4 Corsair

...and those 24 cylinders from the P&W Wasp are a sound to be heard.

And I didn't realize how much I need to have a C-47 in my back yard, not that it would fit, but I do have a hammock with no shade!

I forgot Sun 'n Fun was this past weekend until some guy at work mentioned it. Darn! Looks like a good time was had by all.

And the new car looks right at home in the Hideout. ENJOY!

Nice pics!!! I'd like to get there or Oshkosh someday. We have a pretty good EAA fly-in right here in Arlington but nothing compared to those. I will be at the Reno air races next year as long as they have them. They're selling tickets for this year but no word if it will be the same yet.

I mentioned over in the 1930's garage thread that FIFI is home hangered at the Addison Airport, which is about 10 minutes from my house and on one of my regular drive routes. I have had the pleasure of watching several of her take off's and landings. And I get to oogle her in the hanger as I drive by. FIFI is an inspiring piece of history.

Addison also has a fairly large contingent of other war birds, always a great sight to drive by and watch them take off or land.

Hey Wingnut65 - forgot to ask. I think you told me how to do this but after scans through my and your threads, I can't find the procedure.

I want to make an image be the link to a webpage (like your sig line does for the Hideout). I tried replacing the normal link text with an image link in the URL insertion code and that didn't work (at least not the way I upload/attach images on this forum).

Any tips/pointers? Thanks in advance. (And sorry to make you have to repeat it )

Amazzen, when the EAA, Warbirds of America and the Commemorative Air Force get together, it is a show to remember. It looks like Oshkosh (Airventure) may be the closest to you that would offer something similar. Although, whatever show the Snowbirds perform at, may also have some impressive birds.

shopnut, I should have posted an invitation to all the week before. It would have been fun to see the show with other GJ'ers. There's always next year... April 9-14, 2013. And I am enjoying th new ride! :)

TB66, I've always wanted to get out to Arlington since I read about the highlights in the magazines. I see its coming up July 11-15, but that is about 3 weeks after I pass through. I'll have to keep it on my Wish List.

Shoottx, you are fortunate to be able to see the vintage heavy metal still flying. With both the B-29 and B-24 based there, I'd keep my eyes looking up as well.

We have relatives in Plano and Rockwall and made it out for a wedding weekend a couple years ago. Next time, I need to spend time at the Addison Airport. With the CAF and Cavanaugh Flight Museum, I could kill a day there.

Good Question... If my memory serves me correct, no, don't go there...

You start with an image or picture link that you like, then highlight the whole [ IMG ] ... [ /IMG ] link and then select the 'hyperlink' button above (globe with chain) and post the target http: address as the hyperlink.

In code, it will look something like this: (I added spaces to the codes... Photo link is in bold blue, Shortcut Hyperlink is in red)
[ URL = "hyperlink target" ] [ IMG ]photo target[ /IMG ] [ /URL ]

It should work something like this...

BTW, Now I've got a roll-up TV door on my page, almost as cool as your Bat!

Thanks for the linking tips Wingnut65. It worked like just like you said.

Since I don't normally use the
way of inserting images and upload directly, it took a few extra steps to get the image link from within GJ. But I'm ready to go now with your help.

Glad I could help, shopnut. I use Photobucket and they make it easy to use the image link stuff. I've always wondered how you attached photos and placed them in the text where you need it. I guess it may be the same if you just use the and make that a shortcut hyperlink. Hadn't thought of that one. :headscrat

patlalande123, glad you enjoyed the teaser on the IS. Those that know the car got it right away with the headlight photo. I'd love the ISF, but I would get into trouble. Same with the 350. Besides, one reason I got the IS 250 is the 31 mpg on highway. I travel 35 miles each way to work on expressways, and that will be much easier to handle than the 22 mpg I had on my '99 Olds. The 350 has more power, but not as good mileage. And that ISF starts close to $60k. If I had that much to invest, I'd probably go for a Vette.

Yes, tinted windows are coming soon. Also on my wish list is lower springs, ISF-type front lip spoiler and possibly the rear, wood trimmed steering wheel and wood accents on the dash. But my Minister of Finance wants to pay off our Alaska cruise before I start 'fixing' my new car. Till then, I just enjoy driving it. 380 miles on it so far...

Jut let us know when you are headed this way and we can arrange all of that and maybe a North Texas GJ get together in the Dustbin (my shop) or some place where it would be safe to gather.

Thanks for the offer, Mike. We've been threatening a Texas Tour of friends and family, but this year we're heading north. When we do make it to Tx, I'll give you a heads up.

It's funny how GJ now has me searching for members in areas where we will be visiting to see about getting together. Texas has a truck load of members. Not sure if we will have any spare time when we pass through Seattle to catch up with any there or not. I haven't found any members in Ketchikan, Juneau or Skagway yet, but I probably wouldn't have the spare time there either. But closer to home, I know several that are within 20 minutes from me that I still haven't met. I've just gotta do it sometime!

Great pictures from the air show. I have fond memories of air shows as a kid. My son definitely will too! The quality of that camera definitely shines through with those photos - catching the props standing still, you're definitely pushing some quick shutter times!

Glad to see you got the car in the garage and even more so now that you found some motivation to do some work out there! I'm looking forward to it!

mithrix and Red Leader, taking pictures of airplanes is fun for me. Air Shows are a fun place to hang out at and look at pieces of history that are still flying. In 1977, I got to see replica Spirit of St Louis flying at Oshkosh. In the early '80s at Oshkosh again, I sat under the wing of the Voyager to watch the afternoon airshow. Now it is hanging in the Smithsonian. Go for your bucket list...

I've grown up around airplanes and airplane noises. My dad brought home a Piper Tri-Pacer to rebuild when I was 4 and I've been hooked ever since. Some people hang around at the track or in their boat, but my 'normal' would be at an airport. I do have my license, but haven't flown in over 12 years, since finances were directed to raising twins.

Glad to see you got the car in the garage and even more so now that you found some motivation to do some work out there! I'm looking forward to it!

You and me both. Maybe a little this Saturday, but all next week I'm ******* with the golf tournament (Encompass Insurance Pro-Am, formerly the Outback Pro-Am).

Jeff,

It has officially taken me two days to scroll through this and I must say I am thoroughly impressed. I can appreciate the "vacuum" effect you describe as I am victim of it myself. I do however believe that I will get at least a few years of no overcrowdedness in my garage as it is not built yet and my tool collection is only starting to outgrow my 6' work bench/shelves. Hopefully a 30x48 barn will give me a LITTLE time before it is cluttered beyond repair. You have done a phenomenal job at tackling not only the task of moving things about, but also upgrading your space as you do it. I think that the small things are what really makes the place: the floor tiles not being in the standard patter, for one. The black accents on the overhead doors is another, that really does make the place seem a bit more like a personal space than just a garage. The cuts in the insulation appear to have worked quite well, and I believe I'll be following your ideas with that when I get around to that for myself.

I look forward to seeing the bus be restored, whether it's this year or years down the road. I have a lot of respect for those of us that go out and tackle projects that others might just walk by, and have the guts to bring back pieces of history to beautiful condition that others can then admire. The VW convention must be a great fire under your **** to get going with that.... I can only imagine!

Best wishes, and I look forward to seeing more.

Ryan, Thanks for sticking thru the 8 months of the Hideout. Thanks for all the supportive comments. I want to get on that bus so bad, but I keep being reminded that there are only 24 hours in a day. I keep voting for 30 hours, but no luck so far. Life is still getting in the way of making continuous progress. It seems that I can find a little time to surf GJ before turning out the lights, but finding time to gear up to start a project, do it and then clean up after wards, is not coming as often. The Finance Minister has asked again when the new car will be able to be parked inside and I don't have a clue. Tomorrow I will have a few hours between chauffeuring the girls and a dinner party.

Your place sounds great. 30x48 will be Awesome. Of course after a while it may feel like a starting place... Give it time, the vacuum of an empty space is a strong force. You won't believe how many tools you didn't know you needed. I absolutely had no room for a metal lathe in my shop until rickairmedic posted cool pix of the flashlights he made. One thing leads to another and the Salt Life Hideout now has a 3 in 1 metal lathe. Just wait.

I give others here at GJ credit for many of the ideas in my place. I have a directory on my computer where I keep saving pictures of cool ideas that I want to use. Unfortunately I didn't name it something related to who I stole it from to give due credit. Red leader was the inspiration for the black trim on the garage door and elsewhere in the shop. The floor tile pattern actually came from many renditions that I presented to the Finance Minister. This is the one she approved, but it was one of my designs. The garage door insulation was something I came up with for my given condition. Other people without a high wind zone door won't have the additional braces to have to work around. I guess it's a Florida thing.. But the cabinet builds are what I need for the limited spaces that I have to work with, or to conceal the water heater and AC that are located there.

It really comes down to finding ideas here on GJ that you like and figuring how to make it work in your own shop. The ideas that are stolen are often improved upon by the next person, and so on, and so on... My first design back on Page 1 included a whole wall of counters. I think I am now leaning on the belief that a workbench should be only as big as the amount of stuff you want to store on it. That is why I have given one workbench to the metal lathe. I still have the workbench wall to rethink, and there are many pages to surf.

The Bus will run again. I will be cleaning it out soon of all the storage items it contains. Then to complete the tear down and start on replacing panels. All it will it takes is time and money. Both of which are scarce.

I look forward to seeing your barn thread appearing some time. BTW, love the Jeep of yours.

Is that Smithy out of your trunk yet?

Surely, the drop in gas mileage should have been a big incentive to get it out of there! :)

UPDATE - I MADE SAWDUST... :rocker:
The A/C cabinet build has begun! I will post a full update, but half the day was cleaning thru the accumulated debris field that was covering the plywood that has been stored on the floor. Then I routed some 1x3's for the sliding side panel. All I can show for now is evidence that work has begun...

shopnut and FBF, Thanks for asking but, No. I haven't been able to get the 16/4 wire to replace the one from the switch to the motor. So, it was more because I didn't like the look of the existing one, not that it is broken. But I have a new cord to replace the cord and plug that is damaged. I've been doing a lot of clean up on the Smithy and all its tools and toys. I will post more pix in an update, but here are a couple.

Before...

And After...

Also had to deal with a pest in the back yard...

We've actually had him for years and over Christmas break, I repaired chips and cracks in him and gave him a new paint job. He normally resides in our planter out front, but we put him in the yard for Halloween for the surprise factor...

And now, I'm heading back to the Hideout...

Thanks, JC. It is appropriate for us, since Mrs, W went to that other school upstate. When my company was building a project in South Bay back in the mid-90's, a co-worker of mine picked this up for me where he got his, at a small gift shop in Belle Glade, FL. I just Googled "3 piece alligator statue" and found several, but this one has the realistic face that looks like mine. Possibly it's from the same mold. Other's look too artsy. The web page says that the store is in Dunellon. Might be worth a drive...

They always say there is a gator in every one of Florida's lakes, but maybe now that applies to lawns too!

Glad to hear you are make forward progress on the tools and garage.

"The Bus will run again. I will be cleaning it out soon of all the storage items it contains. Then to complete the tear down and start on replacing panels. All it will it takes is time and money. Both of which are scarce."

Will the bus rebirth get its' own thread? In any case, we want to see pics of every stage, including the clean out! Even pictures of rat droppings, squirrel nests (it is a VW after all), rust pockets, loose change, and all the other detritus that accumulates in old derelicts. A successful rebuild is so much more impressive when the build scrapbook shows just how bad the bits and pieces looked at the start of the project. Also, having detail pics of the as-is condition will help you piece together a solid P.O.A. for the rebuild.

Good luck and keep us posted!
