Chicago in November!? What were you thinking? Most people head SOUTH in the winter; you must be either a masochist or someone who enjoys the cold cutting wind coming off Lake Michigan. lol

Yes, we left the 70's of Florida for the 30's of Chicago. Wind wasn't that bad.

We had a family memorial service to attend on Saturday in Downers Grove and figured we may as well stay up north for the whole week. Stayed in downtown area a couple days before heading to South Bend to spend the rest of the week with family. Saw snow flurries, but not enough to stick.

Actually, after thee weeks in Alaska this summer, we are prepared for the layered look to stay warm.

Hey Wingnut....It's been a while! Garage is looking good... I like the continued color scheme from the floor onto the walls and the gloss black stripe. It's really great to see the bus project underway...looking forward to following that.

Quick RaceDeck question...Am I remembering correctly that you bought some of the cleaner from RD? Or what do you normally use? I'm enjoying mine, but still looking for the best way to clean.

Best of luck on the bus and keep the pics coming!

Thanks, Chris for stopping back by. The left side of the garage is just about finished. So that means I am about 50% done and 80% to go.

I finally got all the Christmas decorations all boxed up last night and just need to get them up to the attic. I hope to be able to get back on the Bus this weekend.

I did get some of the RaceDeck Multi-Purpose Cleaner and have used it a few times and it works fine. I have also used Simple Green and Purple Power or any other multi purpose cleaner that I have handy to clean the floor. It looks great when it is done, but mopping takes a while and gets the water filthy pretty fast. I've found myself wanting to dry the floor off so it doesn't dry with water spots on it. Maybe that is just me or just our water, but when I say I won't dry it this one time, I usually end up doing it. So basically, I use anything and it cleans the floor. Thanks for asking and reminding me that I need to clean my floor this weekend, now that I can see it...

Welcome back, couchmechanic! Hope all is well at your end of the Country. Life has been busy as the New Year starts here in Florida. Inside projects are taking priority, including planning on rebuilding our built-in entertainment center. We want to get rid of our dinosaur TV and get a big flat screen, build in two glass shelved curio cabinets and still fit the gas fireplace, two signed jerseys and storage. Its the 10 pounds in the 5 pound bag scenario. But I am so looking forward to upgrading the 32" TV to a 60". That, and spring cleaning, getting rid of old stuff and now working on Continuing Education by next month, life just keeps moving on, but not in the garage. But the weather has been Awesome! Coldest morning so far has been about 45 and went up to 65. No complaints here!.

chevshack, As soon as I can break away from the projects that Lady Wingnut has planned, I will be back on the Bus. The goal is to have it running this year! (It's a goal, but schedule is subject to change!). I promise I will post photos as I proceed.

I have fond memories of the Ford Falcon Van. My granddad had one in green and white that he always drove down from Ohio. They are still out there, but the ones in good condition are getting scarce. That would be a fun project to restore.

Good Luck with your chevshack renovation. Get the boys involved with the project and they will always remember it. Welcome to GJ, and thanks for stopping by! Stay Warm!

Welcome to GJ, CJUDGE. Thanks for stopping by the Hideout. Glad you enjoyed it. I can see light at the end of my obstacles that have kept me away from the garage and Bus projects. My continuing ed hours have been turned in for my license renewal before yesterday's deadline, so now I can finish up some honey-do's and then on with the show... I hope GJ can give you plenty of ideas and motivation to get on with your garage project. Be sure to start a build thread when you get started.

I hear ya, O, getting closer. I even bought a 1/2" impact driver that is still in the box. I now have free time to get back on GJ, but will be a little while before making significant progress. Thanks for your motivation kicking me...

Good for you Wingnut; go for it!

No pressure..... but have you picked a date THIS YEAR for a roll out and maiden (camping) voyage with the family? Your girls may not really want to vacation with 'The :rolleyes2 Parents' before too long :tantrum2::tantrum2:, so the sooner the bus is roadworthy (not necessarily 'pretty'), the better chance you'll have at making it a FAMILY event! lol

Salt Life Hideout Update - Entertainment Forthcoming...

I hear ya, Finally an update…

As the Inaugural Florida GJ Cookout at the Monster Garage approaches, I’m sure someone will be asking about what's going on at the Salt Life Hideout and on the Bus. I will take this time to answer all your valid questions once and for all…

Not much!

345

Now that is not saying that nothing is happening around the Hideout, just not in the garage!

This is very entertaining... at least it will be...

I think it was a family discussion that lead to the desire to replace our built-in shelving unit at our entertainment center and replace with something new that will allow for a better display for our dust collectors (knickknacks, pictures, collectibles, etc.) and provide for a flat screen TV.

When we had our house built in 2001, we took the option for the contractor to build in an entertainment unit with studs and drywall to match the rest of the house. Shortly after we moved in, we purchased a 32” vent-free fireplace that could fit into one open cubicle and the largest TV we could get at that time that would fit into the other. That was a 32” 2001 Sony Trinatron TV that probably weighs about 200 pounds. (Note: This is not going to be a discussion on the merits or issues with vent-free fireplaces. That is what Mrs. Wingnut wanted and that is what she will have)

The Before Shot:

346

The entertainment center has worked well for us for over 11 years, but it has always looked cluttered and dark. And then there’s that 32” TV thing…

After many discussions and brainstorming sessions with blue tape all over the front of the unit, we came up with a plan – center the fireplace on the floor with a tile surround, add bigger TV above, glass shelved curio cabinets on the left and right and the jersey’s above. Kinda like this! (I even learded SketchUp to create this...)

347

This will allow for a new 60” TV over a new 36” vent-free fireplace with 12” travertine tile surround. We could not use our original fireplace since it was not designed to sit directly on the floor without having a tile hearth in front. And raising it the necessary 5” would push the up TV too high for us. The new 36” fireplace (still in the garage in the first photo all wrapped up) can sit directly on the floor slab and will allow for pull-out drawers on either side for storage to fill the width below the TV. The bottom cabinet on the right will house the AV equipment and will have speaker cloth on the doors for IR control and ventilation.

A custom woodworker was hired to fabricate this unit and now has the new fireplace to work into his masterpiece. It was his idea to add a narrow curio cabinet on the left side to display balls and bats.

An A/V consultant has been secured this week and he will start pre-wire installation next week.

Getting to this point has taken about 3 months, from fireplace shopping, vent-free log shopping, going to home shows and furniture stores to get ideas. Then the hours of web surfing to research how to soundproof walls and what is the best A/V equipment to meet our desires. I can’t say to meet our needs, because this is more of a want than a need… IGO2XS has been very helpful (as usual) with giving ideas on my home theater project learned on his past theater projects. Thanks, Mark!

The Project Begins
After all the planning was behind us, the next step was to remove the existing built-in entertainment center… To keep the Finance Minister at ease, sledge hammers and sawzall’s were not permitted. We removed each piece of drywall, plywood and stud individually. That and having all furniture completely covered.

One of the Salt Life Hideout Support Krewe was very energetic to help out with the demolition process. The other one has allergy issues and was staying away from all the dust.

348

All the exposed drywall corners had rounded metal corner trim that had to be removed. Leverage was the secret force…

349

I did get to purchase the HF Multi-Tool to cut the corner seams from the drywall. This did create more dust than I wanted, but the utility knife was hard work.

350

The Krewe learned proper use of the hammer and pry bar and took quite a few pieces off.

351

Progress was slow, but we kept the dust level to a minimum.

352

A good supervisor will have a cup of coffee or in this case, a glass of cold iced tea.

353

354

It is a good thing that I left the shelves in place until I could get the upper work removed.

355

She wanted some of the up-high fun as well

356

Those arches were put there to stay. They used drywall screws, 16d nails and twisted shank nails. Unfortunately I removed the upper shelves before I took down the arches. The ceiling is 11’ high and the step ladder on the left is 6’ high. Good thing the bottom shelf was still there… (no pics, don’t ask)

357[/SIZE]

Demolition Done! The Master Bedroom is behind this entertainment center and some serious research has been done on acoustics and sound attenuation to keep sound from coming through the wall. More on that later.

358

The Next Steps

Here’s a typical shopnut to-do list…
- Remove existing Entertainment Center – DONE
- Vacuum and remove all dust from Family Room, Kitchen, etc. – DONE, several times
- Relocate gas line from above fire breaks to floor level - DONE
- Relocate the existing electrical outlets
- Drop new circuit for A/V Rack
- Install new outlet and CATV jack to exterior wall for future TV on patio
- Install new outlet, CATV jack and backer boards for wall mounting the Master Bedroom TV
- Prewire for A/V system
- Add mineral fiber insulation to wall cavity
- Install acoustic/fire pads at each receptacle and cable box location
- Install mass loaded vinyl product (MLV) on face of studs for added sound abatement
- Acoustic caulk and tape seams in MLV
- Hang drywall and add acoustic caulk at top and bottom edges.
- Tape, finish and paint drywall

And Eventually…
- Install custom wood entertainment center.
- Install A/V equipment
- Enjoy watching the new 60” large screen TV with surround sound.
- Go back and learn how to use the new universal remote system so that we can watch TV
- Finally, enjoy a movie in full surround sound.

Materials are on site and ready to go!

359

So, that is the update for non-garage related work at the Salt Life Hideout. This Home Theater makeover in our Family Room has Mrs. Wingnut more accepting my request to upgrade my TV in the garage. She realizes that if I have a 60” in the family Room, that a 20” in the garage will not keep my interest. And she will not let me bring my projects into the Family Room just to watch the big screen… Now I will have to move some wall cabinets to get it to fit… Finally some necessary garage time!

Don’t forget the Florida GJ Cookout at the Monster Garage this Saturday! I am looking forward to getting together with other GJ members this weekend. This party has been talked about for a while and is finally coming to reality. I really appreciate Mark for generously opening up his Monster Garage for us all to hang out, eat and talk!

Nice work when we built our house it had one of those builtin entertainment center things I had them leave the wall blank and I was going to get someone to build something but haven't done it yet .
See you saturday

Well, I suppose we'll let the lack of VW work slide for the moment, seeing as how you have been 'redirected' by a higher authority in the person of Mrs. Wingnut! lol

"An A/V consultant has been secured this week and he will start pre-wire installation next week."

I hope you have a saavy technician with the AV system TBD. I don't know if you have already made your AV equipment choices yet but since you are only a little over an hour's drive from Orlando, you might want to wait till mid-June to make your decisions. I wonder if the consultant will be attending this event at the beginning of June so as you could get the 'latest and greatest' AV innovations...

http://www.infocommshow.org/indexAtt.asp

As with a lot of us 'technophiles', it just gripes the heck out of me to buy a piece of consumer electronics gear one day, and find out the next that it is now outdated technology. Putting together a good AV system is not cheap, so why not get gear that is really new and exciting.

While you're waiting for the show's products to be made available to your AV consultant, you could be working on the bus; that is, if Mrs. Shopnut will let you have some 'garage time'.

Enjoy the Florida GJ Cookout at the Monster Garage! I'm jealous as heck and only wish I could afford the cross-country trip.

Looks like the project is making good progress. As for A/V consultants...how would I locate one...hopefully a good one? Looking forward to the cookout.

Nice list you got there Wingnut65. Now it just needs a few more Done's added

Seriously, it looks like you have a good (and fun) project going there. Glad to see you got a faithful helper keeping you on track.

BTW, what the heck is mineral fiber insulation?

Now she's trying to boss Wingnut65 around too? Good - maybe she will ease up on me for a while! :)
(Sorry O, had to do it! ;))

Thanks for the offer JC, but I am keeping my Danny. And I kind like the Tim as well. See ya Saturday!

Thanks for the supportOmph, It is frustrating that I have not had the time to spend on the Bus, but I'm not really complaining about the direction that Lady Wingnut has us focused right now. I've been surfing and shopping for so long that when we finally narrowed down the TV we wanted, it went out of production and the 2013 models have come in to choose from. I don't want to look back and have regrets for what I probably should have selected, so we are taking the time to be picky. I don't think I will be waiting for June to make selections, but thanks for the info on the show. If you are that much of a technophile, I may just need to PM you with my list for some comments. The AV consultant we have seems to be pretty good. He was the only one of four that suggested a Media Center (PC computer) to store movies on and even be able to watch multiple movies on multiple TVs around house. We were just planning on using the cable company's DVR and only watch recorded shows in the Family Room.

Glad to hear you are planning a road trip, Leyenda30. For finding consultants, my first contact was the Magnolia crew at Best Buy. It was $100 to have him come out and see what we had, want we wanted and provide a proposal. They were our #2 choice. We met 2 others, including the one we are using, at a big home show at the fairgrounds. But, for your area, I actually do have a couple A/V consultants in the Jax area that I could send you. We are building a couple ALF facilities in Jax right now and we just selected the A/V company to wire the place up, including a 60-seat theater. I look forward to meeting you at the Monster Garage. PM me if you need the directions.

Your project is looking great can't wait to see the finished project.
11.jpg

You and me both. I've been researching for so long, I'm ready to just sit down and enjoy it. Thanks for stopping by Willi

BTW, what the heck is mineral fiber insulation?

Glad you asked, shopnut I had a Roxul sales team show up at my office the same time I was researching soundproofing walls. They mentioned the acoustic capabilities of their Safe'N'Sound insulation and I had to look it up. I found this video and I was impressed: Mineral Fiber Insulation. I will give a report back on how well it works. (I had to buy a really cool sound meter to do the before and after sound checks.)

BTW, I didn't catch the Mrs. Shopnut comment. I'll have to meet her sometime...

News Flash!
Here is a teaser of things yet to come…

The Concept…
This is the beginnings of the original plan. I originally had power tools all over the garage and ran extension cords to power them. Now, I am planning on putting all the power tools across the front of the garage and add more outlets up there. I also want to change the small refrigerator to a full-size one.
19809Garage-FloorPlan.jpg

To reduce the look of being cluttered, I want to add doors or panels in front of the Water Heater, the A/C Unit and the ductwork. This also shows the power tools, a killer clock!, the existing wall cabinets and a larger flat screen TV! Ideas are still working on much of this.
19809Garage-FrontBack.jpg

The side walls show a concept where I was planning on buying cabinets. The ones next to the kitchen door is now a built-in. The ones between the hurricane shutters may not be needed. I had to keep the wall space opened for a portion of the wall as that is where the car doors open. If I can keep that area clear, then the car can pull in closer to the wall. Otherwise we may have issues getting the third car in the garage. The workbench side shows a HF 13-drawer toolbox with my C-Man on top. The lawn mower and garden tools will remain at the front by the roll-up door. But the rest is up in the air. There are too many ideas here on GJ for me to nail down my workbench yet. Thanks to jimbob1’s pictures and Red Leader’s sketches, I’m back at square 1.
19809Garage-Sides.jpg

I apologize on the quality of how these sketches came out. These were done in AutoCAD, but I really need to slow down and learn Sketch-Up to get these to look nicer.

The Wish List
These are some things still to be done in no particular order:

- Provide built-ins or cabinets to get rid of clutter
- More Lighting
- More electrical receptacles
- More functional workbench
- More storage
- Ceiling mounted air hose reel between the two front doors to allow access to the driveway.
- Ceiling mounted electrical cord reels.
- Remove or eliminate clutter
- Get organized
- Win the Lottery (I have about the same chance as I do getting organized!)
- Get a bigger air compressor
- To have the VW Bus rust free and running (The Lottery idea is looking pretty good now)
- Add a utility sink in the garage
- Finish painting garage – two-tone with stripe (it will be the first one in this neighborhood)
- Ride in a P-51 Mustang
- Ride in a 1966 Batmobile (Both these are on my Bucket List...)

After all, isn't that what a Wish List is for?

Loving the space you have, this web page is ace, your guys over the pond have some huge projects that i can only dream of. I am about to start designing my build in the UK but i was wondering what design software have you used to draw up these plans?

Welcome to GJ, battymatty. Glad you found my build diary helpful and thanks for the nice comments.

I was fortunate when we were looking for a new house to buy, that the development we were looking at had options for three car garages. It is bigger than my last 2-car garage, but I know it is a lot larger than many shops around here and across the pond. But now it feels too small because of all my stuff!

For my design layouts, I use AutoCAD. I'm an architect who learned this old school program when it was new. Now I'm so fluent with it that it is harder to learn new programs. I did learn Google SketchUp to create the entertainment center concept that we are building. I know there are many here on GJ that use SketchUp for their garage build planning. I found helpful videos to teach me.

As you are making plans on your project, take your time to surf GJ and make notes of the where you saw great ideas. I downloaded a bunch of pictures that I liked, but now I have no idea where I stole them from. Good luck on your planning and build. But realize that the more you surf, the better your ideas and plans will become. Thanks for visiting the Salt Life Hideout!

battymatty's visit to the Hideout made me realize that I have not updated the Entertainment Center project in a while. We are now about a 1-week out from having the built-in completed and ready to be installed. The wall behind the entertainment center is completed and ready to go. Mrs. Wingnut convinced me that I did not have to paint the new drywall just to have it concealed. I'm good with that - less work for me and it shows the woodworker where the studs are for him to attach to. Here is the finished product...

360

Progress Update...

The Next Steps

- Remove existing Entertainment Center – DONE
- Vacuum and remove all dust from Family Room, Kitchen, etc. – DONE, several times, DONE, and DONE Again
- Relocate gas line from above fire breaks to floor level - DONE
- Relocate the existing electrical outlets – DONE
- Drop new circuit for A/V Rack – DONE
- Install new outlet and CATV jack to exterior wall for future TV on patio – DONE
- Install new outlet, CATV jack and backer boards for wall mounting the Master Bedroom TV – DONE I also installed a couple jacks for 3 RCA plug for component cables for a VHS/CD player that we have. Yes, VHS still work for old movies!
- Prewire for A/V system – DONE 17 cables in all coming out the wall for the rack!
- Add empty 1-1/2" pvc pipe from left base cabinet to right base cabinet (futureproofing) – DONE
- Add mineral fiber insulation to wall cavity – DONE
- Install acoustic/fire pads at each receptacle and cable box location – DONE
- Install mass loaded vinyl product (MLV) on face of studs for added sound abatement – DONE
- Acoustic caulk and tape seams in MLV – DONE
- Hang drywall and add acoustic caulk at top and bottom edges – DONE
- Tape, finish and paint drywall – DONE No paint needed!

Now we are working on the other side of the room with sound insulating the bathroom walls... photos to follow!

Thanks for checking in!

Oh-oh, methinks you will be glued to your recliner and become 'one-with-the-tube' and the bus might then be left to languish in the garage. lol

"Bus? What Bus?" Never mind. "Honey, pop another Blu-Ray disc in please!"

Making good progress there, Wingnut65 - the Done's are outnumbering the To-Dos! (and that's always a good thing)

Looking great! I know the feeling (not working out in the garage). We are working on painting the outside of the house right now. Should be done this weekend, but it has been a while since I've been out in the workshop, building things.

Looks awesome Jeff! Were you ever able to get that Clausing?

-Dave

Not yet. Just need to schedule a day to go three hours to pick it up.

Right now it looks like I will be posssibly stopping by your place before I can get to Central Florida!

Checking off the 'Done' list does feel good. And the Entertainment Center is getting closer to the Done stage as well!

Jeff,

I see you have been infected by the Shopnut A.N.A.L syndrome...stole that one right off his page! Good work on the entertainment center.

What an awesome thread! I've skimmed it a few times but went though most of now. The garage floors and storage really came out well. Your daughter has been introduced to my young son in a sense - as I kept showing him how much help she is to HER Dad in the garage and renovation projects! Probably not the best way to motivate him, but I couldn't help it!
Nice to see the bus coming along a bit. Slowly but surely is the key to something like that. Thanks for the inspiration too - I am still procrastinating on my attached garage storage lockers, but your ideas have helped!

flybefree, welcome back to GJ. Glad to hear that farm life is treating you and your family well. We will need to see some pix of that growing fan club sometime!

Shaun and Vernmotor, Shopnut really does have a way of rubbing off on others. Especially since the Asylum is much closer to being finished than many of us can brag. And if the Shopnut List system works for him, then maybe I need to be a little A.N.A.L. (Always Needing A List...)

Thanks e-tek for stopping by the Hideout. Thanks for the compliment. Many of the ideas that I have built in my garage have started from looking at what others have done. The RaceDeck floor has really done well for me. I've been blessed that my girls are willing to help out on projects on the garage projects and around the house. (One even started mowing the yard this week and has also learned to use the pressure cleaner on the patio!) I've been able to keep the girls involved in the discussions and planning and then they are more willing to help out when the work is done. Your son doesn't realize how much you have to offer him in the learning process, he probably just looks at is as work right now. Keep offering and he will jump in sometime.

As for the Bus, now that we are back from our bug vacation out west and the entertainment center is in progress, I can see time in the near future to get back on the bus and in the shop. I've been following your Project Thread and your website to see how the experts do it the right way. Most of what you are doing on your build will guide me along my project. With the progress documentation of e-tek and IGO2XS, expert advice is plentiful.

Since the girls in my Hideout Krewe are interested in the garage renovation, I was able to talk them into a field trip and we had the privilege on our Great West Adventure to start off with a visit to Red Leader's own 1950s Craftsman Garage! Red Leader and his wife were gracious hosts for a few hours, even if we did show up at 9 pm after spending the day in the Rocky Mountain National Park! Thanks, Dave and Mrs. RL!

Love the bus project! Here is a pic of my father in laws bus. He's got it complete with the fridge, VW toaster, flat screen, built in vacuum, etc etc. She's a fun ride and obviously turns a lot of heads.

I like those upper shelves in your garage, they kind of look like art deco or something.

Wingnut,

Nice bus, and nice build on the garage! (one of these days I will start mine)

My avatar shows my wife's gift to me when I came back from Iraq last time - it is a running driving DoubleCab (66), I have a 61 Kombi delivery as well -cargo doors on both sides - non running project (in storage)

For now my garage still has the wife's car in (per her request by Sunday night)

This website is fantastic with the various builds and shared ideas. I was going to build parts and storage cabinets, due to this website I plan on using various cabinets my wife and I have found at estate sales for storage - like the one in this pic of my garage disaster:

Hehe...that was the plan:thumbup:

It was great having you and your family out Jeff. We will definitely be heading out to FL at some point since family on both sides is out there now. I'll give you a ring if we make any plans and maybe we can meet up again! Looking forward to it!
