Wow, I thought I had posted the final product... I am totally losing my mind. I will get it posted before the end of TODAY!!!!

Lots has been going on in the Hideout - Some projects getting completed and a few new additions to the place. And for this year's vacation, we took some HI roads. Gotta find some pictures to share.

Now to catch up...

Nice Insight/TWC cable box tuner there.

Its going to **** when it becomes Comcast....

Comcast ***** for sure!

Thanks for the heads up, but Comcast is not in our neck of the woods yet. We've had Brighthouse since we moved in here in 2001 and I really have no complaints about their service. Except when a road widening project found a buried cable, I do not know of any times that BH service was down and we lost connections. Our only other option is Verizon Fios

Jeff,

THAT is one amazing entertainment center...after you are done you need to quote Gladiator and stand on the couch in a leather skirt and yell "Are you not entertained!"

Just an idea.

Shaun

Thanks, fbf! Now I need to add 'Gladiator' to the list of movies to watch. And I wish I could find 'Cloud Dancer' on Blu-ray!

Got it all dialed in yet? ;) BTW: love the van, a T1 or T2 single cabin pickup is high on my list

Thanks for stopping by the Hideout and rattling my cage, Crown. Yes it is working well and I will have the big reveal soon.

The single cabs are sweet. I wouldn't mind having a single or double cab for a pick-up, but I'm not sure if decent ones are out of my price range by now. Gotta get this one back on the road before I look for more projects!

Hideout Update Coming SOON!!!!!

Wow! I thought I had posted this already. My bad! (As in my bad memory…)

Entertainment Center, Volume 7 – Here it is…

The Big Reveal!!!!

After month’s longer than we had planned and resolving multiple issues, the Entertainment Center has been completed!
(And so are these updates!)

From Concept…

347

To Completion!

464 - Stamp this project DONE!

The jerseys and picture are in place and Mrs. Wingnut put all the stuff on her curio cabinet shelves, just like she wanted! She went to the school on the left and has that cabinet filled with stuff from there. Mine is the right side with everything else – Canes, Fins, Bucs... Lights were installed in the curio cabinets and up-lights in the top of the speaker pocket. The fireplace worked well for us this winter.

The woodworker came up with the creative detail of the 6” fluted columns on both ends, which also create the space for the narrow cabinet on the left end. This resolved how to display bats and balls that previously took up only the front 4” of a very deep shelf, leaving the rest of the shelf depth pretty much useless and in shadows. Display problem solved! This shot also shows a better view of the screen pocket with crown molding around it.

465

One design issue we resolved was the reflection of the patio and pool off the old TV because it was flat against the wall. Previously, we could only watch TV during daytime with the blinds closed. Now, we have a heavy-duty, double-arm. full-motion TV mount that allows the TV to be angled so it can be viewed from the Kitchen without any reflection. Another problem solved! (Yes, that’s VW bus owner Mike Wolfe on the TV!)

466

The projection screen works just as planned! The custom order for the extra black fabric drop at the top was needed to allow it to be lowered to our preferred viewing height. We’ve watched a couple movies during the daytime and the light from the back porch is not too disturbing. If it becomes an issue, we can get roll-down black-out shades to cover the sliding glass doors and upper window.

468
FYI, this is Seymour AV’s H95 ‘Center Stage XD’ screen, which is 95” wide, 53” tall and 109” diagonal. (2.4m wide x 1.3m tall, 2.7m diagonal). The decision to add the screen was because the TV was going to be limited to a maximum 60” screen. We will never be able to go any larger because of the built in cabinetry. The screen allows us to go well beyond a 60”. For Jeopardy, we feel we are part of the studio audience!

The screen is much better viewing at night. This was our Big Reveal for our friends for our Super Bowl party.

469

The girls have gotten plenty of use with friends, especially with a Wii ‘Just Dance’ playoff

470

The vent-free gas fireplace works well for us. The Finance Minister is from the Chicago area and grew up with real fireplaces. She wanted one in this house, but didn’t want the hassle of a wood burning fireplace. Also, the space needed for a chimney would have prevented this project from happening. So, she got a fireplace!

471

This shot shows the stacked stone liner that we installed in the back. It adds a little more personality and color to the fireplace, instead of having just the black firebox.

472

Now for a little a little of shopnut's ingenuity… Continuing the goal of taking advantage of every available storage space, we added drawers for DVDs and video games.

473
We could only do this because the firebox we have is fully insulated and requires only 1” clearance on the sides for any combustible materials. I just wish the drawers could have gone up the additional 12” to fill all that empty space as well.

The fireplace was originally installed 2” out from the face of the unit. We insisted the woodworker push it back to be flush and now we have less than one inch from the mantle trim to the screen when it hangs down.

474

All three front channel speakers are MartinLogan Motion 8 speakers. We built the cabinet sized for these and there are many other speakers that can fit here. These are much smaller than other people may want, but with the size of our Family Room and being open to the Kitchen, we weren’t building a perfect home theater room and we didn’t need anything bigger. These are plenty powerful for our needs.

475

The MartinLogan subwoofer is located in the lower left cabinet. We also have a jack behind the couch in case we don’t like having this in the cabinet.

476

And finally…
How to Convert Seven Into One…

448

And now the solution to consolidating remote controls and the trip to the produce department. First, a little rewind back to post 630 where I gave a little background on Universal Remotes:

A little background on universal remotes... There are plenty on the market that can consolidate multiple remotes into one remote. Most of them are infrared (IR) remote controls which sends controls by a light signal and are good for limited distances and direct line of sight to the device. This is what the basic remote that comes with new electronics is shipped with. And if something is sitting between the remote and the TV, like my radial arm saw in the garage, then raising my hand over my head to aim at the TV can work. Sorry, where was I... There are also the remotes that use radio frequency (RF) to control the electronic devices. These can basically see through walls and don't need line of sight. Then there Wi-Fi based remotes that have more access to web based programming (Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.). I can also download phone apps that can control our TV or AV receiver!

Not sure why we just didn’t go with a handheld universal remote, like a Logitech Harmony, but our AV Guru recommended a network base station located in the AV rack that would be Wi-Fi based controls.

We went with Universal Remote Control brand’s MRX-1 Network Base Station. It is only about 10” x 5” x 1” (248mm x 120 x 28).

There are cables out the back that connect to IR ‘flashers’ that stick to the IR sensor on each device. These relay the RF commands from the remote, to the base station and converts to IR for each device. This is all that is visible on the front of the TV. There is one of these on each device.

477

And the winning guess goes to Todd.Brock, who correctly guessed the tablet as an iPad by Apple, thus the ‘produce department’ reference to the solution. I really wanted to go with an Android based tablet, but URC’s ‘CC Control App that is required to run the system, was only available at that time on Apple’s MX-iOS operating system. We went with an iPad Mini with the 7” screen.

478

Thanks for traveling along our adventure of building our Entertainment Center. Hopefully I was able to share some tips and tricks that may be able to help someone solve a problem. If there is anything I did not answer, just ask or PM me.

Now, as far as the Entertainment Center Project goes.... Badee, Badee, Badee...That's all folks?

I’m not sure what’s coming up next, but there’s something fishy up in the Hideout…

What are your plans for the van? keeping the original paint and make it drivable or restore it? Whatever you do to it it's always nice to see them back on the road.

Very nice Wingnut65!

I'm speechless (as was everyone at that SuperBowl party when the screen rolled down, I bet)

Looks great, how do you like the iPad remote?

Thanks, Strouty! The iPad works well for the Universal Remote program we bought it for. I also have been surfing on it, playing a few games and checking weather channel and it works fine. My issue was the small 7" screen for surfing the web and catching up on GJ. Maybe it's just my need for reading glasses at times, but lots of zoning in and out to catch it all.

I have since purchased a Microsoft Surface 2 with a 10" screen. And I feel more comfortable with it since it is MS based. One sales factor for me is that I can get my company e-mail on it and it comes with MS Office so I can do a lot of office work on it.

Thanks for stopping by the Hideout.

That turned out great. Nice touch on the side view display cabinets as well.

Thanks, AKD. We are still enjoying it. The side cabinets are really a bonus. He came up with the idea and it works perfectly.

WOW!!! Great job from page 1 to 33!!!

Thanks, sean! It Hideout is a work in progress and the Entertainment Center just filled in some spare time I didn't think I had. Now I can get back on the garage projects.

I'm going to have to check in on your Buick project and your upcoming new addition! Congrats!

Thanks, shopnut! It is a little surprising when friends don't know about it. The crown molding detail isn't even noticed when they walk in the room. But I still think I/you could have figured out how to get more storage in the unit!

Thanks, Gerard! Now that things are starting to focus toward the garage, I need to plan to stop by some time to see all those cool tool storage ideas you've come up with. That and teach me to lay down a few beads.

I/you need to save something for Entertainment Center, Phase II :D. But for now, just enjoy it.

(The drawers alongside the fireplace are clever!)

Great questions, Crown! My ultimate goal would be to remove all the rust and get it back to show quality. But since it has been sitting in the garage for too many years waiting for the planets to align and oodles of spare time is available, I've changed the focus. Right now my goal is to get it running and in roadworthy condition.

I have all the parts to complete the brakes, but before I finish them, I decided to replace the swiss cheese front floor pan. After this is done, brakes and wheels will be replaced and then on to the engine.

I will do a full post update before too long, bur for a glimpse of progress, here is the current status. (Why do I hear the Flintstone's theme song...?)

And, thanks again for waking me up. I check many other pages, except my own!

I just spent the last hour looking over your entertainment center.
What a huge project you had going on. The whole house torn up for several months. I can only imagine the many conversations between you and your cook/finance minister!!
It sure turned out fine, you must be proud of the finished project.

I had to laugh when I saw the shot of your girls dancing to the T.V.
My son has 3 girls and they spend every day in front of the tube dancing with the wi in their hands

Now about your Bus. Is it next up or what???

Thanks for sharing

Mixed or straight co2?

Mixed. Its a 55 cf C25 tank.

I tried that on my 60 bit I lost the damn wireless keyboard thingy.

Now that's a great idea. Surfing Garage Gallery on a big screen would be like a personal tour! I'm hoping to fit a 46" Smart TV out in the garage sometime. Every year I keep hoping for a Black Friday sale that I can't turn down.

I've seen the Rii, Favi and Esky wireless keyboards, but haven't gotten to the point of buying one yet. When I get garage TV with internet access, I will want one.

Thanks, Don for dropping by. If I had seen you wandering around, I could have offered some Iced Tea...

Yes, this turned out to be a very big undertaking that created many domino effects that impacted the family. Like repainting just about the whole inside of the house. This was the goal of what the Boss wanted and eventually, she received. Since it was initially her idea to start this project, it went much easier. Probably a lot easier than it will be to obtain funding approval for a new engine, since that is my project!

The girls have been enjoying the screen more than I have had the chance. For their birthday, they had 14 girls all over the family room watching 'Frozen' and 'Tangled', two of their favorites.

I want to post some on the bus, but there still is something fishy around here that I need to resolve first.

However, the bus project is moving forward, probably a little faster than at a snail's pace. It recently got buried again with some acquisitions. But, since I did post the Flintstone photo, I can show a couple more shots leading up to that one... These are the 'Before' and 'During' shots

Thanks, JC. We've been enjoying the ML speakers.

Just pulled the latest Hot VWs out of the mailbox, but haven't open it yet.

I will be giving you a call when I need more parts. I know I'll need to talk about the engine rebuild versus replacement.

I just use a low cost logitech wireless keyboard and mouse and they work great... In the basement they keyboard is about 10 feet from the computer and it still works good!

I agree... Used Logitech stuff before and works good. That's what I used before my garage computer died. Now I mostly use tapatalk through my phone.

Yep, Logitech would work. Those are about the same price range as the other budget keyboards. I'm sure I can get approval to purchase one. Hey, then it would only make sense that I NEED to buy a TV for the shop since I already have the keyboard to run it.... Do ya think she'll buy it???

So what has been so fishy in the Salt Life Hideout? Here it is…

The Hideout Gets A Fishing Pole Storage Rack

I have the same problem that many others do – too many fishing rods stacked in the corner that keep falling over or hanging on a nail and getting bumped every time the back door is opened… (Not to mention not enough time to go use them…)

To keep from them getting damaged, I finally decided to put them all in a rack. But what kind ? ? ?

Fishing Rod Storage - Research and Design

I’ve Googled and found that there are all different types of rod holders available – from free standing racks, to wall mounted and ceiling mounted racks.

480

481

The only space that I have available is on my ceiling, so I searched more for ideas to hang all my fishing rods.
- They can be store bought or homemade and made from wood, aluminum, steel, plastic, PVC tubes, wrought iron hooks, eye bolts or even rope.
- Some come with just holes that need the rods to be speared through, and others have slots to slide the rods into.
- Some have all the rods going the same direction and others have them alternating back and forth.

482

483

I searched hundreds and saved over 50 image ideas from across the internet to help me make a decision. Final decision was to go with wooden rack with a hole for the handle and slot for the rod end. I also decided that I wanted them all facing the same way to save having to move the ladder to each end of the rack.

First step was to determine how many spots are needed (including allowing room for new rods…) and how far apart they needed to be.

484

485

Spacing them out so they would not interfere with removing any one, and spacing for the size of reels that I currently have, they all needed to be 5” apart. (Note: if you have more rods to store, space them a little further apart and alternate their direction.)
It is also a good idea at this point to make sure that they size of rack that I determined I needed, would actually fit in the space where it will ultimately go. Double checked and all is good.

Using AutoCAD, I recreated many of the designs from in the pictures I found online. For all my rods, a 1-1/2” hole for the handles would be fine. On Design Option #2, I also checked to see what size slots would be needed for the rods. I settled on the larger 1/2" slot.

486
Designs #2 and #3 were all too close together to have clearance for the reels.

Designs #1, 4, 5, and 6 were all alternating rod directions, which I decided against.

Final decision was for Design Option #7. I also decided to lower the hanging point in the wood to allow more space above for getting them in and out.

Now, let’s build it!

Fishing Pole Storage Rack – The Build

Now to make it more complicated… Besides the standard 5-6’ fishing rods, I also have a 24” that I carried behind the seat of my truck and a few vintage rods that are also shorter. This will result in needing two different length rod racks. But, I can use a single board for all the handles and then two different rod racks for the rod ends.

I used 1x4’s with the resting holes just below center. This allows for clearance above them to get the rods in and out

487

Trial run on scrap wood determined that a pilot bit to start followed by a standard twist drill bit would work. This sample also determined that rounded corners did not look as nice as square corners for the rod slot.

488

Rod locations were all measured out and the slots were designed accordingly. I reversed the slot location (left or right of the rod holder spot) so the last one was not right at the very edge of the length of wood.

All holes were drilled with the drill press. First was a pilot hole, then a slightly larger bit, then counter sunk to allow the big 1/2” bit to find its mark.

489

When all the holes were drilled, a speed square helped to draw the cutting lines.

490

A jig-saw was used to cut the slots and square up the top corners

491

The handle holes were made with a 1-1/2” hole saw.
Then came the sanding using an orbital sander and files inside the slots. Since this would not be getting much heavy usage, I used drywall joint compound to fill the irregularities where he edges chipped off. Then more sanding.

492

Racks are built and ready for paint!
This shows how the handle holder on the right is a 64” long piece of wood and the rod holder is two pieces – 24” and 40” long - so they can carry different lengths of rods. This also shows that I will use small scraps of 1x4 as mounting plates to attach the racks to the ceiling.

493

Build is done! Now let’s paint it and get it mounted…

Fishing Pole Storage Rack – Finish and Install

All painted and ready to go. Except they are too bland in color… I ended up painting the mounting plates Gloss Black.

494

This is where they are going to be mounted. I have limited ceiling space available, but I did find this area over the garage door opener and between two light fixtures. Blue tape shows where the trusses are located.

495

Mounting was relatively straight forward – Pilot hole through mounting plate and into one truss followed by a screw. I added a 2x backer above the ceiling for the left screw on the rod end since it was between trusses. The short span spacing of 24” (0.6 m) is fine for my 30” (0.75 m) pocket rod and my vintage rods.

496

First attempt to install the longer rack realized that the 60” (1.5 m) span was too far and was only catching the narrow tip of some rods, causing the three on the right to sag. That isn’t going to work…

497

Second attempt at a 48” (1.2 m) span and it all worked out. Rods don’t sag anymore.
(And, Yes, I know I have one rod that I haven’t broken in yet!)

498

Now, all my fishing rods are hanging on the ceiling and out of harm’s way. It was just a matter of time before one would get damaged.

499

However… I don’t like the small mounting plates that I used. I tried using scrap 1x to get this installed, but it really needs full length Gloss Black mounting plates to make it look better.

So, this was a relatively easy one-weekend project. I took my time to let the filler and paint dry between steps. Hopefully this little project can give someone else an idea of how to get the tangle of fishing poles out of the corner of the garage and mount them out of the way.

Good Luck! Go Forth And Build!

You have some very clever solutions for the problems you face! My house came with fishing rod storage on a small wall between the garage door and the outside wall that works for my small collection of fishing gear. I'm really liking the entire entertainment center and sound deadening you've done, I may just have to use some of those ideas in the future. I'm eagerly looking forward to the VW build.

When you hinted at something "fishy" in the garage, all I could think of was that you went out and bought a Plymouth Barracuda or Corvette Sting Ray :). Never would have guessed something for fishing poles.

Great job on the pole holder  Those things are tough to deal with and I know many people have $1000's ******* in their collection and don't want to see them get damaged. Yours has a nice clean look and you should be able to spot the one you're after with just a glance.

BTW - In all of your internet searches, did you run across any racks that hinged down from the ceiling for access to the poles, maybe with some type of rope and pulley setup? I'm always looking for ways to avoid those step ladders if at all possible (and you probably know the reason why ;))

that looks great and i'll be copying the idea!

Thanks, Slammed. That is why we share ideas on GJ. Feel free to pilfer ideas to improve your place. Glad to have you jumping in!

Thanks, jbmatth. The entertainment center was a fun project that allowed me to document how to address some different issues around a house that may possibly help someone else. Namely the sound deadening. Acoustic control isn't usually a priority in a garage, but the steps I took may just help others out.

Steal all the ideas you can, I got many of mine from someone else to start with.

So am I ! ! ! !

Great idea!!! Great use and relative unused space. Now, I do see one problem in this WHOLE post. That is why aren't these poles loaded in the boat with a cooler full of adult beverages waiting for your GJ buddies to show up to go fishing? LMFAO....

Someday time will allow for me to get the poles down and figure out how they work. Then I need to find someone with a boat to see if the rods actually DO work!

Wow, that would be Awesome. Gotta let the Mrs know that it would not be unheard of for me to get a Stingray. Or, I'd be more than willing to clear space to store someone else's C2 while they do work in their shop... ;)

I don't have much investment in my gear for the limited use it gets. But then again, I have no clue the value of vintage rods and reels.

I understand your concern with access to upper storage areas. I don't recall specifically for fishing rods, but I did find these ideas

Although... Someone with experience with hydraulics, cables, gears, pneumatics, etc, could get something like this to work for concealed storage!

Great idea. But if we go to the dock with fishing poles and beer, well, we can enjoy both at the dock! Fishing is fishing! Beer is beer!
