Swing by my place in the White Mountains so you can try out some Alligator Juniper.
Best do it on the way back from Jim's and Shorty's ,though ; at 6500' elevation the snow is kind of deep up there right now. ;)
With all these paying customers, I can afford a new tow rig!

A co-worker took down a dozen trees on his acreage. Headed up into the foothills to tackle some fresh logs👍

Got the mill set up for tomorrow.
4 guys and a forklift should plow through quite a bit of his stack.

Parked it on a tarp, so we can collect the dust for him to use around the stalls and such.

Supposed to be 20 degrees in the AM, but clear and sunny.

Should be a fun day!

On the off chance the logs are walnut, don't use the sawdust around the horses. Heard bad thing can happen.

Sounds like a fun weekend.

Maple and Fir. He’ll spread out the dust on the muddy horse trails.

We cut 14 logs, ranging from 8’ to 16’.

Lots of 4x4s, 4x8s, and 5/4x12”, and some 24” wide slabs.

Sure was nice having a forklift 👍

You guys got a nice stack of lumber out of those logs. Yeah I’ll bet having that forklift was a real treat.
Thanks Jay.

Part of the compensation for my days work will be a percentage of the stack.

The Maple was nice, but the Doug Fir was beautiful.

Will be working that out this week.

Making use of my Sunday evening to give the mill site another cleaning.

I want to fine tune the grading before I bring the mill home.

My understanding is that store bought lumber is finally coming down in price. Welcome news for those of us without a portable sawmill. But it's still fun to follow along on rivenhewn's saga.
Wood pricing has dropped. Good for us at work.

We had a number of jobs go on hold til things got better.

Problem is, we’re too busy now with metal buildings and they lost their place in line and have to wait🙄

Stopped by my favorite industrial surplus lot on the way home today.

Came out with a nice little Greenlee cart.
With some minor alterations and some paint, it’s gonna make a nice slab cart.

My back is feeling better already

Also grabbed a small section of conveyor rollers to make an out feed table for the planer.

$125 out the door

That cart is for their small wire pulling system. It’s a well built base frame to do something with. I used to have the complete ultra tugger system. Having that cart with the capstan and dual booms made it a godsend getting around large projects.

Our sparkies have them, fun toys to play with.

The scrap yard has more, especially rolling wire racks. The conduit rack I had seen before was gone.

Those pneumatic tires are going to work so much better on gravel than the dollies I have now.

I’m thinking of making a top for flat lumber and one for round logs.

Well worth the price!

Riv, you might consider a flat top with a pair of V-shaped supports that magically come up through slots in the flat top to support round logs. Bonus is with 45 degree Vees it will self-center the log and prevent if from rolling. Retract them when you need the flat table top.

A pair of old scissor jacks with the screws tied togetherusing cheap ag sprockets and chain from TSC would make a great lift. I'd use a cordless drill to power the V-supports up/down. Nothing would need to be precision machined; the table slots would guide the V-supports laterally.

Guess my brain hasn't fully retired from the machinery industry after all. ;) If I still lived closer this would be a fun weekend project.

Taking a Riv day today.

Stacking some wood, finishing my RV power box, and started cutting on the new cart.

Kiln hitting the 125 degree mark!

Sure beats the day job!

I saw that on IG too!

Looks like a hand crank feed. I wonder how he coordinated the rotation rate with the feed rate.

Maybe he’ll do a video on that

Riv, what is the optimum operating temp for your kiln? That is an impressive internal temp compared to yesterday’s high temp, maybe around 48* up by you.

So many variables, but hitting 135-140 is the target for bug kill.

I’m thinking of adding a thermostat controlled fan to keep temps from exceeding 145.+/-

I suspect blade tension limits how tight the spiral can be- might be he's cranking by feel, maintaining constant tension as the carriage traverses.
That’d require some hand-eye coordination, but I’m sure he’s had a few practice runs.

I had a craftsman router attachment, it was a set of rails and some gears and cables, it would make spindles, like the rope spindles from the 70s,
The Dude probably had one.

The Greenlee cart is turning out to be more of a project than I was hoping for. Bought it on a whim, and didn’t give it a full inspection.

Besides the tires not holding air, the paint has failed, and there is more rust than I’d like to see.

Having a little flap disc party!

It’s still sound, with some paint and new wheels/tires it’s going to be a good looking back saver👍

Couple of issues with the cart.

First is that there isn’t any cross-members above the axles.
Second, the tires stick up from the platform.
Some slabs are wider than the space between the tires.

Started looking through the stockpile, and found some old channel that is appropriate size and gauge.

Time to start cutting and welding.
