Spent the last few days cutting up some limbs off a “little”Black Walnut tree.

23’ 4” circumference, 7.5’ in dia.

Limbs as long as 65’

The arborist recommended removing a few problem limbs that were just under 2’ in dia.

Thought I’d post a failure, a hard lesson.

Cut up some Madrone last fall. Had it outside/under cover.

But I needed the space and my kiln was empty.

I figured being winter, and with all the vents open, it would be like air drying outside.

All looked good going in. The internal temp was consistently equal to the outside temp which was in the 30’s -50’s. My high temp limit fan was set to full time. No direct UV, as it was covered.

I figured wrong.

The wonderfully beautiful material self destructed.

Now, Madrone is notoriously hard to dry, but I thought I’d get some decent boards out of the lot.

Wrong again.

Every form of drying defect imaginable is present.

I’ll be lucky to get anything useful.

“Live and learn” needs to be my new motto.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Talked to a local WWer a few weeks back, closing out his shop, asked if he had any madrone slabs. “Nope, too hard to deal with.”

Maybe you can get some smalls, spoons, knife scales etc out of it. I had to fight for a hand saw handle.
