Yea, that may be the ticket. I'm buying an acre behind my place it has 60' pines covering it completely. There is another acre next to it that is covered. I'm thinking about getting a portable saw mill in there and cut all of the Pines, leave the few hardwoods here and there.
But I could have the cedar cut also.

With that much to cut, I’d be looking at something like this:

Started my nurse log project yesterday.

Buried it in about 15” deep. Going to dress the top up with the chainsaw a bit. Also going to make cuts on the inside of the rot hole to allow dirt, water, bugs and worms, and assorted bacteria and fungi to creep further into the wood.

Hope that will help with the deteriorating of the log.

Thinking I’ll cut the fence down a couple feet to allow more sun to hit it as well.

Ordered 2. Just in case.

Not really confident it’ll take, but it’s a start.

The way I figure it, when I die the next owner of the house will get to enjoy a nice tree😜

Almost finished the clean up party(of one).

Filled the recycling bin twice, the wheelbarrow, and a few garage cans. Wet and heavy from washing the mill.

Got a new part from Woodland Mills today. Think I’ll start on a maintenance party next.

Also placed an order for another set of blades.

Going to try Jerry’s Ripper37 blades.

Went on a site visit to another mill the other day, and the guy highly recommended them.

I'm getting tired of the lumber jokes. Carry on with the pictures of trees / wood though.
How bout a frosty sunrise pic of the kiln?

Woke up to the sun burning holes in my eyes.
My favorite way to wake up.

Then the cloud cover turned everything to grayscale. Rain in the forecast 😕

Picked up a few little accessories for the mill.

First was a truck strap ratchet bar. This will work perfect for use with the unistrut prying brackets.

Next is a post level. I’ll use this with one of the 4x4 angle loading ramps to help level curved/uneven logs. Not super precise, but will give a quick look when setting up my junk logs.

Last is some 2” schedule 40 conduit. These extend the log stops, and help when turning larger diameter logs.

Maybe show your wife how to use that grappling hook while you are away at work so the good ones don’t float away. Just tie it to the shore until you get home. Either that or have her tell Ranger to “fetch”!

I have better luck with the wife helping than the goofy dog.

He’s just for photo ops. Not a lot of electrical activity between his ears.

Did a little soil mixing for the nurse log. My madrone arrives on Monday.

Equal parts of soft mush from the rotted tree, sand, and some potting mix the wife had.

Need to pick up some Mycorrhizal fungi, apparently madrone have a symbiotic relationship with this fungi. Who knew?

Seems like fungi are what really makes the world go round.

If you haven’t watched Fantastic Fungi, I highly recommend it.

Also cut down part of the fence to allow more sunlight on the tree.

Next up on the mill was a section of the treated power pole.

And I did a little burn inside the nurse log.

Creosote makes good looking wood, a buddy of mine built castle, it was all wood and he applied creosote to the whole thing. It looked 1000 years old.
I kinda like the look of the exterior part I cut off.

Going to have to come up with a way to utilize them. Figure I can add some copper naphthenate to the cut side for some additional nastiness 😬

been following/lurking on this thread. You've got some NICE looking stuff out of that water, and I see the kiln being a critical piece.

general thought/question: the logs come from the water. Would it be considering littering to dump the sawdust back in the bay? it'll just disperse and break down, and it's good nutrients I would think overall.

Thanks for following along.

I’m sure there are benefits and negative aspects to dumping the saw dust in the channel.

I prefer to error on the safe side, so I don’t.

Especially since I’m on a community boat launch with eyes all around. It could draw unwanted attention.

It gets dark every at 4:00 in the afternoon this time of year and the tide tables are pretty reliable…
Hey, it’s not getting dark til 5:00!

Besides, there aren’t enough fish out there, don’t want to clog any gills

Planted one of the Madrone seedlings in the nurse log. Small, scraggly start.

Planted the second one in the yard. It’s a bit more exposed to dogs, rabbits, and weed whackers. Bent up a little hardware cloth to protect it.

Oh no! No start!

If y’all knew me, you’d know that small engines are all voodoo and black magic to me.

I removed the plug, and pulled the starter. No spark. Plug is clean. Only 20 some hours on it.

Thinking it’s a coil. What am I missing?

No On/Off switch.😜

Kohler Command Pro 14hp.
