Saylor-Beall...Original or Clone...Here is the answer...

This question has been mentioned a few times on GJ. Many folks assume that if 'MADE IN USA' is not cast on the case, that's it's a clone. I have 2 older SB pumps, and neither have it, but do have the SB serial # tag.

I sent an e-mail to Saylor-Beall asking the question and stating that I assumed they started including the 'MADE IN USA' when the clones started appearing.
The following is the response I received...

You are correct in this reasoning. I asked around our factory and while I couldn't come up with an exact date, it appears we started doing it some time in the mid 80's in response to our compressor getting cloned. It's important to check the pump itself, however, because many pumps have been switched out over the years, so an original saylor-beall tank could have a newer clone compressor pump on top. There are two other easy tells for our clones (besides serial numbers). First is we believe we have always cast part numbers directly into our parts. Our part numbers are 4 digit numbers, so you should be able to find a casting somewhere on the pump with the part number. Second, all of our pump's screws and bolts are in the imperial system, while all of the clones are in the metric system.

it was only Braxton-Hicks… I’ll add more photos of that unit when I get to the shop… our boy is 5 months old now tho!!

now that we have two kids, I always thought I should have two Saylor-Beall compressors too— that way they won’t have to fight over it when I die (I’m under 40) and it’s still running strong!!

So… I found another “80 Gallon Air Compressor” on Facebook… got it home last night it’s still sitting in the trailer. I had to pay double what I paid for the first one — a blood curdling $300 Ameribucks.

It’s a 705 pump on an 80 gallon tank — not sure on HP of motor haven’t scraped the dust off the nameplate yet.




Guy got it doing a commercial clean out of an auto parts store in Eugene, OR — said he had it sitting for years at his place — and just wanted to get it gone. He took it apart to get it in his truck—and never put it back together!! Made for a very easy load out with just a hand truck and ramps onto the trailer.

As for the first one — it turned out to be a 703 Pump with a 2HP motor and a 60 gallon tank—“small” for the Saylor-Beall world with only 7.5CFM @ 175PSI!!

The unloader was stuck and was leaking air past the compression fitting — about 2 bucks in parts and it was fixed. It’s in use at our shop and kicking ****! It’s a great compressor. It’s missing a fan shroud but OSHA doesn’t visit me so it’s ok!

I’ll do a photo bomb of both of these when I get a moment!

That is a low oil level shut-off switch.

Weirdly enough — the motor/pump config on this compressor
is opposite my other Saylor Beall.

Did you buy that 703 pump?

I'm in need of a crankshaft for my 705. Ended up buying a bad compressor, got screwed and need to replace crank.

My So. FL friend is a Saylor-Beall dealer, for new & used and he repairs them. You shouldn't have a difficult time finding a replacement crankshaft I assume.

There's not a lot of used parts out there available
