School me on my compressor

I bought a 5hp, 80g Eaton a couple of years ago, and it's been fine. The only thing I don't like about it is that it came with a 150psi pop-off valve, even though it claims to be a "175psi" compressor, and the tank working pressure is 200psi. I replaced the pop-off with a 200psi one tonight.

Anyway, there are "things" on the top, that I don't understand. Care to take a look at the photo below and school me?

Top center pop off valve, facing right - What does this do, and does it have to match the psi rating of the one in the tank

Brass fittings with splined knob in lower center - What is this? Does it need any adjustment if I change the tank pop-off pressure?

Valve at lower left - I assume this is just an oil drain?

"Bolt" above the valve - What is this? An oil fill plug? It seems rather elaborate for that. There are 5 holes in the top of it, with what looks like a ball down in one of them. ??

I replaced the pop-off with a 200psi one tonight. Why?! it does not increase capicity of the system. The last bit of pressure increase is where the compressor works the hardest. Why run at a higher pressure cut out unless you need the higher pressure?

Oil fill port is the square plug above and to the right of the sight glass, in the side of the crankcase that is angled about 45 degrees.

What pressures does the pressure switch cycle the compressor on and off at?

I assume this is two stage, cannot tell for sure from the pic, cannot see the pump cylinders that well.

First off if you don't understand the functions of the compressor why would you make alteration to it? Sounds like a dangerous move and should be reversed.:shocking:

Thanks Charles and ViceGrip. I'd talked to Eaton about the pop-off valve a long time ago, so I pinged them again with my other questions today, and thought I'd share the answers:

1) Tank Pop-off valve - Should have come from the factory with a 200psi one. I can run the tank pressure all the way up to 175psi, if I want (though I'm thinking 160-165 will be fine, with a 40psi drop until the compressor restarts).

2) Pop-off valve at top-center of picture - If the check valve is stuck closed this pop-off will blow, and not the head on your piston pump.

3) Brass assembly at top of tank - Toggles between pressure switch relief mode (thumbscrew closed) and continuous run mode (thumbscrew open).

The Eaton guys are really helpful. The manuals are near worthless, but the people will answer any question you ask them.
