OK, if You insist

Laughter is Good Medicine, and no prescription is needed. Garage Journal is a fun place to hang out, joke around, ask questions, offer and receive advice, learn about new and ancient tools and practices, and overhaul the world in general..

I was once active on the Busiest Toy Train forum on the www. Sadly; various members were entombed in their sober, snobbish ways. One rude member once told me to "go lay down by your dish or something". The rudeness, criticism, and stone faced personalities of some members caused other participants to withdraw membership, and eventually got the Forum shut down for a cool off period. To Me; this shut down came as no shock. Although I haven't signed in for years; I will browse over the threads on occasion. They have some dedicated members whose contributions are highly valued. But sadly, due to certain members; that forum is a ghost of what it once was.

There are no dumb questions, only dumb answers.

This is about the general direction the forum has been going the past several years. Endless repetitive threads on easily searched for topics.

To be fair - that's about true for any long running forum.. if everyone just "searched", there would be no dialogue at all.. I'll agree - this one is a bit much though..

What type of ratchet do you use for 6 point sockets? Also what type of oil do you use on your ratchets? Asking for a friend

I usually use left twist 84 tooth 4 position ratchets on my 6 points, but never with a handle longer than 14 inches. Given the dynamic range of today's fasteners and their applied torque, certain alloys will not sustain potential forces within their advertised range. Special consideration should be given to stainless steel hardware since they typically display lower HRC ranges and can, at times, be temperature sensitive in overly humid environments. I've also found avocado oil to be best for lubrication due to its higher flash point and heat absorption rates.

6 pt socket.... I have had a reed and prince that I originally got in a craftsman screwdriver set back in 1985? I do not think that I have ever used it, not even once. Should be a new thread : what exactly is a reed and prince used for?

Should I throw em a curve ball and show 8 points?

That's what I was thinking! You aren't any kind of pro unless you have 6, 8 and 12 point female and at least 4 and 6 point male in chrome and impact of course and several different drive sizes, shallow, deep and mid length plus a few stubbies. I figure 1,000 sockets is a good start for an apprentice doing oil changes. You can start building on that set once you get over $10 an hour.

No question about it; I am another one that appreciates Bill's contributions of pictures.

It's easy. Anyone can do it.

A quick Yahoo or Google search of the subject matter, and then choose images.

Pick the best photo or graphic and grab a link.

I use images to search as often as I use web text searches.

12 point are better on anything that isn't rusting to bits.

6 points are generally more available and cheaper to buy.

Torx is better than invert hex.

E Torx is better than hex

Spline drive is fine until the bolt head gets rusty then it just disintegrates.

A lot of bolt heads on aircraft have 12 point heads, so all of my sockets from work are 12 point.
Regarding the Phillips / Reed & Prince screwdrivers, how about a Tri-Wing screw head??? Used to really curse those things, especially on the Airbus A-300's.

6 and 12 point are the same, don't worry about.

what is important is to make sure you turn your ratchets to off when you put them away. no sense wearing them out or burning up the batteries in storage.

Somebody said that a 12 point is easier to engage if you're in a situation where you can't actually see what you're engaging; I can vouch for that.
