I gotta love this thread! After retiring from Conoco after some 30+ years, this makes me go all sentimental. Many of you may know, however some may not....but Conoco merged with Marland Oil Co. Mr. Marland was a big YMCA advocate and in 1922, Mr. Marland leased the triangle design from the YMCA for the Marland Oil signage, replaciing the YMCA in the crossbar with MARLAND OILS. When Conoco merged with Marland in 1929, they replaced the MARLAND OILS with CONOCO. In 1972 when the lease was up, neither Conoco nor the YMCA wanted to continue....thus the Conoco capsule was born. (It is believed that the new capsule was designed by some Oklahoma Sooner grads.....if you look closely at the Conoco capsule design, you will see several "OU"s in the logo to go along with the red and white theme.) Of course today, Conoco has merged with Phillips 66 to become ConocoPhillips. Just thought you might enjoy a little history behind the CONOCO triangle.
Thanks for the info!
