I gotta love this thread! After retiring from Conoco after some 30+ years, this makes me go all sentimental. Many of you may know, however some may not....but Conoco merged with Marland Oil Co. Mr. Marland was a big YMCA advocate and in 1922, Mr. Marland leased the triangle design from the YMCA for the Marland Oil signage, replaciing the YMCA in the crossbar with MARLAND OILS. When Conoco merged with Marland in 1929, they replaced the MARLAND OILS with CONOCO. In 1972 when the lease was up, neither Conoco nor the YMCA wanted to continue....thus the Conoco capsule was born. (It is believed that the new capsule was designed by some Oklahoma Sooner grads.....if you look closely at the Conoco capsule design, you will see several "OU"s in the logo to go along with the red and white theme.) Of course today, Conoco has merged with Phillips 66 to become ConocoPhillips. Just thought you might enjoy a little history behind the CONOCO triangle.

Thanks for the info!

My DX sign is on a pole about 12-14 tall. I had a hole dug about 6' square, and put 1" stell all thread type bolts to bolt it down to. I measured the bottom of the sign and took 3/4 plywood and made a template of the holes, then put the all thread thru the holes of the plywood when the concrete was workable.
I had two of them dug, cause I have a TEXACO sign thats going up in the next few weeks. I just stripped all the old paint off and put new white paint, and black, original colors on last nite.
ridgwel, I'm prety close to Ponca City OK, where the CONOCO refinery is, also the Marland mansion. The Marland mansion was very oplent for its time, with the grand ballroom, and indoor pool. I think it was built in the early 1900's
Bartlesville OK, is where the Phillips refinery is and the headquarters is, which is about 80 miles east of Ponca City.
My sign has indurred very strong winds, just over 100mph. Part of my shingles did not, nor the neighbors barn, some of it was in my yard.

The first sign I repaired and restored was a smaller Conoco with a frame around it.
I like the way you built your post. I may build one for my repop signal sign!!
