Congratulations on the new job...

Remember, you're running a "small business", and keeping the cash flow high, and the "bills" low is the mark of a successful business...

If you happen to run across a Type 35B for cheap...let me know...as in,
"We don't have anyplace to put it, you can have it"---free...

3. I have 2 favorites, NWS Fantasticos, and Knipex X-Cut. You may want both...they serve somewhat different needs.

I really like the softer striking end of the Snap-On punches, but you may want to consider Rennsteig or PB Swiss...

How far are you from London, BTW? Just curious, that Buggati shop would be amazing to see. I'll be staying in the central london area.

As far as tools go as you are just starting out, there is nothing wrong with middle of the road range tools. Check fleabay/GJ classifieds and any other second hand source you can for name-brand stuff, but your first tool set doesn't have to be/shouldn't be Snap-on/mac etc, its a lot of cost up front. As well, much like your first car shouldn't be a 500hp $50k hot rod, your first tools will give you the learning experience of how to treat them right, which ones you need most of all and should spend the money on, etc.

Bahco makes good files/punches, and you can usually find them new on special/discount here and there.

For a reasonable price, I like this air drill. I still use this as my go-to because I don't need a $300 high end air drill. This guy works brilliantly.

Here's a better link for you in the UK:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313&_nkw=neiko+air+drill&_sacat=0

Side cutters, Knipex, klein, channel lock are all fine in my book. Depends what you want them for?

P.S. why the 20mm socket? That is a size I literally never use, must be common amongst older cars? I have one on my 1/2 rail of sockets that's never moved.

My recomendations stem from this: I've been doing this for 9 years. I still have some of my first tools, but most have been replaced, and I've expanded my set 10 fold or more since my first year. It really is a build as you go thing, and I am still picking up items these days, swapping things in and out. When you have a nice, full set that lets you do your job, That's when you start nit-picking the fine details between which ratchet or cutter/crimper you prefer, imo. Tools, like cars, can depend on taste between two different people as well.

I think I'd ask the boss for his recommendations on tool brands. Shows you care about what he thinks. I say this assuming the owner of a Bugatti restoration and repair shop is a hands on guy and knows his ****.

Pretty good point, Zeke. Not to mention he may have local Brick and Mortar store connections, or at least discounts.

Also, on the box subject, I wonder if these guys ship to the UK.
http://www.strictlytoolboxes.com/

I've had 2 of their Montezuma 72x30 elite boxes (first one blue, sold to buy one in Green) and anther fellow in our shop picked up one of their triangle boxes.

Though, if bench space is limited that last one may not work. One thing someone mentioned that should be touched upon is a tool cart. A 3-4 drawer cart with a top that slides apart (not a flip-up lid) is really handy. Keeping a set of spanners, sockets, ratchets, screw-drivers, and your most common air tools to wheel around right to where you are working is very handy, vs trying to push around your whole tool chest, or walking 2 miles a day going back and forth for tools.

Best of luck with the new gig. I'd love to do something like this one day, maybe when I pseudo retire, hah.

NickMM---

When you retire, there will never be enough time for all the things you'll want to do...

Behold---a 1927 Bugatti Type 35B!!!

And two Bentley replicas from...

Congratulations on the new gig! Do you have truck accounts or do you owe Snap-On and Mac directly? Here in the states if you owe corporate then the new dealers will make collections. You would still owe the original dealer if they're truck accounts.

You guys rebuild those vices? Man, must be nice to play around with such expensive machines. I've applied to a fiat dealer at my home town as a side gig. Honestly, I just want to sell the Fiat roadster and Alfa 4c one day.

Congrats on the new job Merbie. I agree totally with WYO George, it's about substance not image.

Honest answer:

1. You simply tell your SO dealer you are moving and make proper arrangements to pay him.

2. Buy a box if you want, it's your money. I've always been of the opinion that my tools make me money, the box just keeps them off the floor. I refuse to go in debt for tools, much less a box to put them in.

Congrats on the new job. I hope it is all you wish for.

I have not read every comment but you are getting some good advice.

As far as a box goes, don't go into debt, buy a used box, even a cheaper one till you can save some cash. If you buy the first one right, you will be able to sell it for what you paid for it and move up to a nicer used box. Might take a few deals and a little time but you can get your dream box if you are patient for a ton less money.

At 18 if you can avoid debt and interest charges you will be set for life.
If you have to pay interest then the item you bought is so much more expensive.. Avoid interest, you will get more money in the bank and then buy tools with cash.

Great job,
Regards,

Got a bit of a problem fellas, at the shop I'm being back stabbed pretty bad, people have been ******* with me hiding parts from me and sabotaging my work, the foreman is the main culprit and has been telling my boss 'I'm not listening' and described me as a 'funny' boy, all my work has been sound and I haven't messed up anything too bad as far as I can tell the foreman is very nice to me and iv caught him talking **** about me and the worse thing is a fella I work with who I thought was genuine and I do have a laugh with has been slagging me off too I caught him talking to the foreman, I get along with two people the general handy man and the engine builder everyone else I can tell has been talking **** which is a shame, my father knows the boss well and I'm thinking this is why this is going on, iv only heard this today so tomorrow I want to go in guns blazing but I thought I would ask the ol gj first. Thanks for reading any advice will help me a lot
