Around two years ago I got a job offer to move to Melbourne and join the magazine where I was freelancing full time. It was an attractive offer on several levels because my daughter just about to start high school, my son would be closer to the Royal Children's Hospital (he has Cerebral Palsy) and we would finally get a consistent wage. I was earning okay money freelancing but some months were great, other months were poor. A consistent wage would be a definite advantage so we decided to sell up and move.

My father-in-law has always liked my shed, and he's just gone through a messy divorce, so he decided to buy our old place and move out of Sydney. That made for an easy sale, but it also meant we had to wait until he had money.

To see the old shed go to the original post. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=157726

So I moved first and found a house to rent, then three months later my family moved down. Then my mum decided to move down too; she's been on her own since dad passed three years ago and wanted to be closer to her grandkids. Lots going on all at once!

So after moving mum into her new house, and my father-in-law into our old house, it was our turn. The rental property was a basic four bedroom with a two car garage, but I couldn't do anything there so my garage life has been on hold for two years. I don't have to tell you guys how frustrating that can be. We looked at probably two dozen houses before finding something even close to suitable. We needed a house my wife would accept and a garage for me, or room to build something, and we finally found something. The house is only three bedroom but big enough that my wife is happy with it. As for the garage, it's interesting.

845127bfd3734378a65b3b3fa72caede.jpg

The house has a large and high carport out the front with a gate behind that and a concrete area leading to the garage. The real estate advert listed it as a 12x6m shed, but that doesn't tell half the story. The previous owner removed the front roller door from the brick facades and fitted a glass sliding door. He was a photographer and used the front section as a studio/display room.

Here's the front. The shed itself is colourbond (steel) and in decent shape.

Here's the side.
uploadfromtaptalk1435993880307.jpg

The block is about 1000sqm and it also has a neat little 6x2.5m storage shed next to the main shed which my wife and I will share to store our respective bits. She's into arts and crafts, and I'm a car guy. We'll fill this in no time at all.

I'm still deciding what to do inside. The shed layout has the potential to be an awesome mancave. There's four different sections in the shed; the front section, the centre, the back and the side, plus a toilet.

Here's the front section.

Looking back out the front.

The right hand wall (looking towards back of shed) with a split airport system. I'll be keeping that in there :)

The back of the front section. I'm going to remove the sink.

The left hand wall. I'm going to paint it because that colour is ugly as hell and I'll remove the plywood.

I'm posting this using my phone so I apologise for the multiple posts, I don't want to write a massive post and have it all disappear on me.

The centre section has already been given a rustic look with rusty corrugated iron used throughout.

There's a couple benches already and I might use them but I have better benches in the shipping container which has the contents of my old shed.

Looking back towards the front. My main drama is the front section is too short for my Valiants. I'm going to widen the opening (and replace the glass screen door). Using go jacks I should be able to fit two Valiants. Trouble is I have three.

It's a nice space for old signs and shed art.

There even a thunder box. Love the old recycled timber walls.

Now the side section. I reckon this might end up being the workshop/tool zone. It's already got a pretty good bench and boards for hanging tools.

The bench area

Opposite the bench area. I'll probably line this wall, not sure with what just yet.

The back section. Not sure what I'll do with this yet. Maybe put my tool cupboards in here. Or maybe I'll take out the wall and open the centre section up.

Looking straight back into the area.

Here's what is behind the wall.

Behind it all there's another section I'm calling the paint shed. I can't concrete the floor because there's pipes running across the block underneath.

So that's what I've got to work with, and I'm pretty happy with it overall.

But it has a couple issues to deal with. Firstly I can't put any cars in it as it currently sits, nor is it high enough for a hoist. I've also got to seal the floo hole in the roof from the potbelly stove that the previous owner took with him.

I'm looking to do some painting in the front section and remove the sink and bench (I'll use that to build a bar in the entertaining area). The floor has a weird painted coating that looks alot like hammertone. I think I might coat the floor in the centre section before the shipping container gets here and I start moving all the big benches, cupboards, tools and parts in.

Any suggestions on how to improve, fix, modify my little mancave?

Scotty's Garage II is looking good and has plenty of potential.

My boss Telf loves it over there, I'm on the other side of Melbourne but yeah I'd love to check out your setup. I'll have to check up on your thread to see where you got up to.

I know he often comes for the Chopped event but more to see here than that. :)

A day trip to Shepparton is a must :rocker:

A couple of good event in that part of the world.

Too "cute" for me. Looks like a ton of potential, or as you say, a canvas. I couldn't leave that sink there for much longer than it would take to rip it off the wall and throw it outside.

Maybe it's not the sink itself. The tile and the 2 x 4 are blinding my judgement. ;):D

Yeah that sink and mirror is definitely going. Wife has me painting some rooms in the house first, then I can attack the garage

So I've been a bit quiet but slowly getting stuff done in the shed.

First job was moving everything out of the back section to the front so I could paint the floor.

ae68f3295479c34dcedc5e8d0eff5342.jpg

Then I shortened some of the internal walls to give me more space in the main workshop area.

And removed the glass sliding door on the side.

Then I acid etched the floor and coated it with Bondall Drive On Paving Paint. The first coat was diluted and sunk straight into the concrete. I let the concrete dry for a whole week of 35 degree days before I gave it the first coat.

This was after the first coat

This was after the second, it's still wet, which is why it is shiny.

Here's how it looks after two weeks. I'm going to give it one more coat before I call it done. Looks pretty good but I reckon one more coat will look awesome. Hopefully this stuff works as advertised, I'm not really going to be driving on it but I will be pushing cars on it and working on it. It's certainly better than bare concrete.

Welcome!

That space is definitely a nice one. I see several ways to set it up, and what tools you will be having and organizations of parts and supplies will decide on the nice tool area shown in the photo of that space. It looks really good, and seems to be a nice sized space.
Looking forward to what you do with it!

Best Regards

Thanks mate. I've got a shipping container full if tools, benches and cupboards to fill the space, plus three cars. But I'll make it all fit somehow.

I'm going to use the front area for car storage (and dress it up for man cave duties with a decent TV and lounge), with the project car in the back area. There will be benches against the side (corrugated iron) wall and I'll set up the side workshop for tools.

Stay tuned

:thumbup:I am loving what you have done, just awesome.

I have been tempted to do my floors as well but they are full of oil, grease and stains not unlike yours were, so that has given me some hope that I may be able to rescue mine some day.

Thank you for the update.

Yeah the acid did a great job. There was some sort of material that was really tough but I used a sander to help remove the parts the acid didn't lift completely. The concrete looked really good, and quite course, before I laid down the paint.

Laid down a third coat just now. We'll see how it looks when it dries. Hopefully it doesn't need another coat, but I have a little extra paint if it does.

Impressive progress, Scotty!

What are your plans for the lounge area? Are you thinking of adding a bar and furnishing it like a living room/den?

I'm building a bar in our covered entertaining area so I'm not tying up valuable space in the shed.

fddb8574bdb7868f4b4c607abdf9c743.jpg

I'm actually thinking of leaving the sink in place because it is ****** handy to have around. The plan is to be able to keep one or two cars in the front section along with a lounge that I can push up against the wall when I'm not using it.

I did all the edges in back section this morning and added some more paint to a couple little sections but the floor looks really good now. Really happy with it.

Scotty, I with you on that score.

There is no point when space is at a premium to have a bar in a shed unless that's all you use it for, a small beer fridge yep that I can live with.

Yep, definitely a fridge in the shed for drinks but bigger fridge with the bar. And space will definitely be at a premium when all my gear gets here.

Now that the floor in the main area is done, it's time to tackle this section. This will be the main workshop and tool zone.

The existing benches aren't really up to my standard and the far end is way too deep. I don't like benches that are deeper than an arms reach. I find they just accumulate junk that you can't reach. So I'll empty it out, clean it up and work out if I knock them out and start again or modify what's there.

8a85aab548efe612874b6ef422968948.jpg

I'll also line the walls with 12mm plywood, or something similar, so I can use them to hang hand tools and other gear. There's another wall behind me that needs lining also.
