I have a SDS hammer drill that I picked up in a garage sale 15 years ago. I plugged it in and it worked, so I gave the 10 bucks being asked for it. I believe the brand is Bosch.

I have neve used this or any other hammer drill to bore holes in concrete. I have found that I need to buy a 3/4" hammer drill bit.

My question is...are these sds bits universal? I don't want to spend 30 bucks only to find out it will not work in my old drill motor.

Basicly, school me on hammer drill motors/bits.

Many thanks in advance

There's only one SDS Plus shank design, which must be what you are asking about. So, yes, it is universal. It's a Bosch design that is now a defacto standard.

If you have a hammer drill you don't have SDS Plus, though

SDS Plus is for a rotohammer, the SDS Plus has keyways in the side.

The most common SDS chuck design is "SDS Plus" which will cover most drilling needs for general concrete work such as tap-cons, smaller core drilling, wedge ancor holes etc. under 1 1/2" (usually) The other common SDS chuck is SDS-Max. This is for bigger chipping and demo hammers. SDS max has replaced hex drive for the most part (outside of jack hammers) For $10, I'm sure its an SDS plus

I actually went to the rental place and rented a bit when I needed to drill a rock for a water feature. I was able to borrow the hammer drill. Just another option. If I remember it cost a ~$10 to rent a $100+ bit.

Think the skil of that era were hex shank not SDS.

Right, but the Skil 717 used a different style of hex shank bit, not the far more common 7/16" and 9/16" hex shanks used by other models of Skil roto-hammers, and most Black & Decker, Milwaukee and Rockwell rotary hammers of that era.

Anyone want to buy a Skil 717?:)

Looks like I got a spare power cord for 10 bucks.

Thanks for all the effort in schooling me.

FYI, my Dewalt D style hammer drill accepts SDS and SDS+. You can also buy addaptors to accept the other sysles as well.

Don't give up so fast. As KnurledNut said, ICS still sells bits for the Skil 717:

http://icscuttingtools.com/catalog/page_157.pdf

(Second listing on the page for Skil 717, not the B&D 717 at the top.)

Assuming you really want to have your own rotohammer instead of just renting when needed, or spending $300 on a new one and the price of bits on top of that.

The old Skil rotohammers were excellent heavy-duty tools and well-respected. The only reason they're not still making them is because when Bosch and Skil merged in 1992 (before complete ownership by Bosch in 1996), the competing industrial-quality products in the Skil line were discontinued.
