I have a 35 year old Craftsman compressor made by deVilblis. The tank is corroded and leaking. Any safe fixes, or known replacements?

This is what I have. Haven't been able to find replacement tanks like you once could. Hate to replace it!de74b80a8ce75045b28bd7a1ef3a9f11.jpgcc1a6542b4b63968eeebdac808d089d2.jpg

Don't bother to attempt a "repair". Replacement tanks are available (usually generic) but are often 75% of the cost of a brand new compressor. I retired my old Craftsman when it developed a pinhole leak, after 30+ years of faithful service it owed me nothing. You may be able to sell the old pump on CL.

Might find a used tank on Craigslist, bad pump and or motor. There's one right now near me for $40. But this is why it's a good idea to drain the tank every so often.

Pretty sure no matter how often you drain the tank it will eventually rust. 35 years is pretty good service.

Check with a compressor sales & repair shop - they often have used units that they can scrounge a tank from. Also here, and possibly other online sites (Google is your friend)

One might suppose more Craftsman tanks are reported to rust out because there were more Craftsman compressors sold out there. It also might be they used thin, cheap tanks; I mean lasting only thirty years without being drained; what a ripoff.

But yes, better, a bit of looking should find a sound later tank. They are thick on the ground because the Chicom compressors and motors are overtaxed. Putting two capacitors and a "5HP" sticker on a sheet metal motor the size of a loaf of bread is a lie being told at the entrance to every FLAPS and orange/blue big box store.

That’s crazy, I have one. Bought it from a guy for $50, as a spare.
How close are you to Colorado?

perfect time to upgrade! that's my plan when my almost 20 year old craftsman gives up the ghost, hopefully in 15 or so years!

I would keep an eye out for newer used compressors because I've looked into replacement tanks before and like the stated above, it is not worth it.

I think you could find one if you advertised on CL or elsewhere. Also there are many old or broken compressors around. But I agree that it is easier to replace, after that long.

If compressor pump and motor is still good and you really like it (old is gold) I would just make a search for a 30 to 50 gallon tank on a donor used machine with dead pump or motor then do a nice fabrication swap to donor tank .
Could take a while find cheap decent donor tank but if you got time find and fabricate actual dollar outlay can be pretty low .
