Sears Could Be Gone If Slump Lasts Through Christmas

Article basically says Sears is burning through cash, revenues are down 10% from last year, The analysts say that Sears must make up ground during back to school and especially Xmas to stay around.

"Heavy losses in the second fiscal quarter, things are not looking good for Sears Holdings. These losses are up nearly $400 million since the same time last year, and with only $1 billion in cash and holdings Sears is having a hard time staying afloat. They are quickly burning through $715 in net cash from operations for the first six months this year and with another $116 million of capital assets left, they are quickly losing ground—at the rate of approximately $150 million per month.

This means that Sears could easily run out of money in the next eight months; Fitch Ratings has downgraded their credit from double C to triple C, putting it at the lowest possible end of the credit spectrum for retailers.

But can Sear’s hold through the back to school season and make up solid ground as the holiday approaches? Time, as they say, will tell—and time is probably the only thing Sears has less of than money.

Still, CEO Eddie Lampert managed to generate another $665 million in liquidity selling both Land’s End and some unnecessary real estate but that isn’t going to be enough to continue through the rest of the year.

Revenues fell last year by 10 percent, a fair decline for the longstanding retailer. Some of that could be accounted for from spinning off Land’s End and closing a few stores, yes, but Kmart—a partner—continues to slip—breaking just above even last year.

So with only a few months of revenue remaining in a franchise that is hemorrhaging cash and in a down market that is particularly tough this year, can Sears make it to Christmas? If they can, it will be their best hope at restoring their business."

Too bad. I was told at our local Sears store that they were on the "stores to be closed list" this coming spring. It'll just give Wally World that much more business.

Unfortunately they were too late/ineffective to adapt to changes that modern internet commerce brought to the retail market. A very similar path to Blockbuster in that they have/had impressive real estate holdings and kept a respectable stock of product in their stores, but were too slow to change with the market. Sears very easily could have been what Amazon is now, but I guess when something is working(as it was for Sears in the early part of this century when online competitors started gaining traction) there is little incentive to change.

Yesterday, Ed Lampert loaned Sears 400 mil of his own money. That's 400 mil he'll never be able to pay back to...himself. If Sears defaults on the loan, he gets the collateral, which is over 500 mil worth of Sears real estate. The guy who approved this deal? Why, the CEO, Ed Lampert.

He's just slowly bleeding Sears into his own bank account. Then Sears will declare bankruptcy, he'll buy something else, and start all over again.

Sears is now nothing more than a convoluted scheme to defraud all shareholders except the one named Ed Lampert.

It's really sad. I've seen it coming like the rest of us and I know it was bound to happen at some point, but it kinda *****... I mean sears is (was) a part of the America I love. Sad to see it fall to other overseas markets.

Now what will happen to Craftsman?

Good. I worked in a Sears tool department for about a year and a half and in that time I saw quality decline drastically.

i'll be sorry to see Sears go as I have some Craftsman stuff that my great-grandfather probably bought.

Unfortunately, I'd rather use that than the stuff available new in stores today, which is probably part of the problem...

Believe it or not, the Sears Auto Center local to me had the best price on good tires for my Jeep and they seemed to be a decently professional shop...

Craftsman and Kenmore are all Sears had going for it. Now Craftsman has turned to China for it's production. Why go to Sears now? Their automotive department fell first, now the rest of the store is to follow.

I'm sure another retailer will take on Craftsman. Perhaps K-mart will carry the full line of Craftsman like Sears. Until they fall like Sears anyway..

I remember when they were the Amazon, we used to pour through their catalog and pick out the school clothes and piece together our Christmas wish list. You could even fill out the order form, mail it in and never step foot in the store. Smae gig as Amazon, just different technology and delivery times!

At this point anything I buy from sears i do not expect a "forever" or "lifetime" warranty. Mostly because of stories like this. I've always liked craftsman and I can get stuff for cheap. Plus as a home user I doubt ill be breaking too many objects like hammers or wrenches. So for me its fine. But I wouldn't bet on them being around for more than few more years much less my lifetime. Or if another company picks up the craftsman name having them honor that guarantee either.

Sad news, but not surprising, bad decisions combined with a changing retailing landscape have doomed Sears for a decade or more. Rest assured that 1 day WalMart will go through the same thing (40 years a go how many people would have thought Sears would be on life support?), but not any time soon.

I can not figure out how they have lasted THIS LONG !

The Craftsman brand is owned by a separate company, KCD IP, LLC (Kenmore-Craftsman-DieHard), so Sear closing will not affect the NAMES. Whether any other corporate entity will deem them valuable enough to buy them is TBD.

Land's End was spun off in March of 2014. Since then LE is up 36% and SHLD is down 37%

Sears is a mess. There are very few people whenever I am in there.

Also, they have a website that actually penalizes you for going to the store. They have online prices that are lower than in the store. Most stores know not to do this. It actually discourages foot traffic.

I just wish they'd die or be reborn, soon. At least there'd be different sears/craftsman threads to read.

They should: loose the department store mentality and start selling products that actually SELL. I have to walk through clothing and it's devoid of life.

I get that USA made craftsman is gone and that was for business reasons yada yada...supplement with Armstrong which is made by the same $%^& company as craftsman and start selling GOOD tools again. If Sears started stocking some basic armstrong stuff it'd sell like hot cakes. start processing armstrong warranty...get us guys in the store and we'll buy more stuff.

reach out to women, not in terms of marketing tools to them, but making sears THE place to shop for your man. When a woman needs a birthday, christmas, or other gift for her man give her great service and show her why the more expensive Armstrong tool better than the crappy evolv. Most people I know have a dollar budget and will expend that on fewer quality items rather than more el'cheapo items. But they don't know any better. My MIL literally walks into lowes, finds something that "looks neat" and asks the sales guy "would my husband like this?" Perfect opportunity to say "why yes...yes he would. But you know this one is better quality, and not that much more money" My MIL would be all over that. every other woman I know has a painful time shopping for her husband. Sears is missing a great opportunity here by offering nothing but cheap junk and no service.

As long as Sears keeps operating the way it does, they will not turn around anytime soon.

Their website is terrible, their marketing is often confusing and their entire corporate culture encourages the destruction of each others divisions internally. Kind of hard to compete as a company when you encourage back stabbing, you provide poor customer service and you company has worse organization than a chicken with it's head cut off.

Sears is a company that needs a complete corporate enema.

Due to the horrible customer service I receive at my local Sears while picking up online orders, I am now laughing. I hate to see Craftsman go under though, so hopefully it will be sold to someone who can continue selling it.

It's such a bummer as I have always loved going to sears....... My last few trips were such a nightmare......Long lines, horribly slow service and overpriced goods.........

As Garage Journal folks on the tool forum, we're interested in the hardline tool products that Sears sells. It's only one small part of Sears business. Clothing and home items are the really profitable items that occupy serious floor space but only if they sell. Getting women in the store to buy those items really drives the profitability of stores like Sears, Kohl's, Penney's, Macy's, etc....... Penney's dumped tools and appliances years ago and its profitability has waxed and waned over the years as they hit or miss selling clothing and home decorating trends.

For years, the most profitable part of Sears was it's credit card business. It sold that off years ago to raise cash to implement whatever the business plan was at the time.

Eddie Lampert has played the game well for his wallet but he probably doesn't shop at Sears or K-mart so why should he care about iconic brands, loyal customers, employees and suppliers. It's all about his bottom line.

I hate to see Sears die but the marketplace is ruthless.

also read they have lost money for NINE straight quarters, more than two years
I would say they are out of money now and not in a few months

too bad, I remember when sears was number one and Kmart was the number two retailer.

I have bought from Sears many times over the years, never been my go to place, but I still enjoy going there. It would be sad if they go under. Companies go under all of the time but Sears is a historical institution.

True, and when I go there now it's like a museum that sounds like a library.

Apples to turnips. You're talking about two different sears.

picture or it didn't happen

Ok to be completely fair I'm referring to the last 2 times I went in and there was only one person ahead of me but they had a solid 8 to 10 minute long transaction..."long wait times" would have been a better description

I was just in a Sears store a couple of weeks ago. An elderly gentleman (WWII/Korea war generation) brought in his (at least) 40 year old -v- 1/2" ratchet. He said it was slipping. Exchanged it for a Chinese made 1/2" ratchet. He was so happy. He said something to the young salesguy like "if you want a dependable tool always go Craftsman". I didn't say anything, I'm positive he had no idea what he just exchanged his -v- ratchet for.
