Sears Scratch and Dent discounts...

Ok... today i got up at went to sears in hopes that they might be giving away special 80th anniversary craftsman stuff... Well they weren't but, i did notice a 5 drawer rolling box that had small dents in the front bottom corners near the casters, all of which could be pounded out. it was marked down from 159.99 to 111.49. Now i went over to the displays to see how much it was going for new. It was $109.99. So it was cheaper to get the box new than to buy the dented one collecting dust in the back corner. So $109.99 from 159.99 is $50 off, i proceeded to ask the sales associate if i could take the discounted box off there hands for the same $50 off sale and apply it to the already discounted price. He said NO, and kind of chuckled. I was kind of pissed having been a craftsman club member and an avid craftsman buyer every month at this particular sears. Now i remember reading all of this board for getting an additional discount on other merchandise. Am i wrong in this situation? Should I not have thought that i could get anymore money off of this faulty merchandise? What do you guys think? :headscrat

I can see why they did not discount the box due to the Cman Club sale. I read this thread several times and if I understand it correctly the damaged box was marked at a higher price than the new in the box ones. In instances like that I have asked for the dept mgr. and pointed out such an irregularity, then see if I can get the deep discount approaching from that way. I bought a side box that way and never regretted it. (BTW, welcome new member!)

My local Sears is often willing to make a deal to get rid of the open box, scratch and dent, and customer returned stuff. That stuff is supposed to automatically be reduced by a certain percentage every week it sits on the shelf. It does not always scan that way so I always check with an associate what the price should be rather than just taking it to the front of the store checkout. Sometimes they will just ask me what I want to pay for it. I am talking about the clearance stuff with the big print-out type tags. I got a great deal on a timing light and a set of brake tools a few weeks ago. Tool chests tend to move pretty fast when they are marked down so they may not be as inclined to deal on those. You never know too, maybe the guy you were asking wanted the tool chest for him self when you pointed out that it should be discounted further.

My local Sears hardware store in the past would wheel and deal on used, returned or damaged and display items. Then they got a new store manager with no customer experience and won't cut prices below sale prices.Other sales people in the store say he won't last long because sales have fallen off drastically.Cant' wait until he is gone and things go back to normal. (Sears are you listening ?)

I've gotten a few things that were scratch and dent items at less than the normal markdown or sale..I always ask to see the manager..most of the time they are happy to get rid of the stuff...the store here also has a small "clearance" area as well and they are always willing to deal a little bit.

I'm always checking out the clearance section when they have one. The best deal I've found was a 2 drawer ball bearing intermediate chest for $50. It's a little skewed but once I put the top box on it, it works fine.

Although when I went by a Sears in Gainesville yesterday they didn't even have any kind of clearance section. The one in Ocala, FL seems to have the best one that I've seen.

Yeah, i figured it was worth a try... the worst he could have said was "no". The sears here has a very small section of clearance items but its usually my first stop when i go. Picked up a set of cman chisels and the torx cman screwdrivers that didn't come with my set. Also how low have you guys seen the tamper proof cman sockets go for? two weeks ago i think they were 29.99 do they ever drop to 19.99? Thanks

Some stores will treat crack/scratch/dent items as seperate stock and wont apply current running discounts on items to the damaged goods. Some stores will offer the discount with an extra 5% discount on top of it but wont offer much extra incentive to purchase the "damages" item over the sale price of the regular item. It really depends on the store. I don't have much experience with Sears in terms of scratch/dent items but it seems to me you should definately get something extra off besides the regular sale price.

There is a Sears outlet store across the street from teh sears in the mall here. I went in the outlet store and picked up a set of drill bits and went over to the main sears and the same thing was cheaper at the regular sears. I've notices this same thing with most items. A set of screwdrivers was loose in a bag and all dirty, selling for the same price as a nice new kit over at the mall. Same for toolboxes with big dents or totally crooked boxes. A whopping discount of about 5%-10%.

Their return section in the main Sears is eaqually laughable. A returned lawnmower selling on discount for the same price as the new mowers on sale. I guess the dirt and grass caked on it added value.

Hey everyone - new to the board here, so I figured I'd revive an old thread for my first post. I got a killer deal on a new toolbox (my first <b>real</b> toolbox, actually) at an auction house that sells off Sears scratch and dent items, customer returns, etc (not to mention that they also sell a TON of building supplies). If you live in or near Girard, PA (just west of Erie) or Hamburg, NY, I would recommend checking this place out:

<a href="http://www.cambridgeindustrialliquidators.com/">Cambridge Industrial Liquidators</a>

I was able to pick up a Craftsman stainless steel 5-drawer ball-bearing chest with the GripLatch system for $120...actually $144 after paying all of the auction fees. But still a steal since the box right now is on sale at Sears for $315 (normally $350). The only thing wrong with it is a very small dent on the back left edge, which you never see and which doesn't impact opening/closing the drawers.

<a href="http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00959632000P?filter=Type%7CBall+bearing%5ECabinet+Color%7CStainless+Steel%5EStyle%7CChests&vName=Tools&cName=Garage+%26+Tool+Storage&sName=Chests+%26+Cabinets">My Craftsman Chest</a>

A little about me - I'm not a master mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, I just enjoy the satisfaction of doing things on my own when I can. I've learned a lot from my dad, who's been working on cars all of his life and is currently a mechanic for his local Harley shop. Tool-wise, its pretty much all Craftsman for me right now - I don't use my tools enough to justify shelling out the cash for MAC/Snap-On, etc, but of course I still drool every time I go home and look through dad's toolbox. Fortunately, I'm only 26, so I've got some time to catch up to him :)

Looking forward to chatting on the board!

Haha, nice try Junkman...I might be a n00b but I wasn't born yesterday :bounce: Although, you didn't specify what tool(s) I needed to send out...this could be a way for me to get rid of all of my old, bent-up, non-US-made tools.

Anyone interested in a cracked 13mm "made in china" socket?

Nah, your supposed to put the old broken chinese socket back in the Craftsmen package and return it to Sears, then they sell it in the outlet store.

Guess when I was young, I didn't mind buying dented/scratched or cracked items; now, I rather not have them dented ... especially when the discount is not all that great...

I've found a couple places in SoCal that sell nothing but product returns for Best Buy, Costco, Sams, etc. Most of the big stores don't want discounted defective product sold in the store, and part of the volume purchasing is nothing goes back to the manufacturer. Great deals are mixed in with the total junk, but most of the time its priced low enough to average out.

If I didn't enjoy getting a good deal, I wouldn't waste my time. I also understand people who enjoy paying full price, whatever makes you happy.

JRGSPE73, welcome to the General Tool Discussion. Many folks give this forum a wide berth unless they are well-stocked in popcorn, beer and ancient tool catalogs.

First off, thanks for referencing the subject as scratch & dent. References to crack & dent remind me of the staff at the local body shops. They are either doing it or they are showing it.

My local Sears "Hometown Outlet" (or whatever they call it) has a scarce selection of tools and a bad attitude toward warranties. That being said, I would buy a toolbox from them provided the damage was minor and the discount was...acceptable...

Finally, there may be references among the constituency from time to time regarding "smartasses" in the group. I can assure you that no such buffoonery is tolerated here, and any such references are clearly the sign of a member who is a couple of oboes short of a bassoon, if you know what I mean (wink, wink)...

In short, I'll happily take a couple of scratches or dents (but NO crack), if it will save me a few bucks. Enjoy.

I have NO IDEA what you're talking about....

Another thing to consider while we're talking about the scratch-n-dents is to always check the clearance section of any store that you happen to be in. I'm not just talking about Lowes or HD or Sears. But I have seen Norton abrasive on clearance at HF. And 3M stuff on clearance at Walmart. Clearance areas are great to check for consumables....

Big store used to be in Fullerton called Bargain Warehouse. Unfortunately they are now wholesale only, mostly to swapmeet sellers and smaller stores. At there peak they handled the returns from 125 costco stores and ran 4 auctions a week open to the general public and a couple wholesale only.

Best Buy I think sells to anybody by the semi trailer load via a regular auction at some distribution center, and the goods show up at swapmeets all over and smaller discount stores.

Ebay has killed most of the stores open to the public. Now the wholesalers all have a ebay staff that gets all the "good" stuff, with only junk sold locally asis.

Sears operates their own clearance centers, but I suspect also has a wholesale back end operation.

Target has some agreement with Goodwill stores to sell returns.
