Do you have a smart phone? If so, there are any number of A systems that you can look into.

Ok, so the question you want to ask yourself is do you want someone monitoring the building and do you want the police called if there is a break in. We have an ADT alarm, it protects the house and storage shed for all my equipment. If someone enters, ADT calls the police after trying to reach me thru the alarm. We get a text to avoid the house. It has an away and a stay alarm setting. Costs me $54 a month. Got it thru an ADT affiliate. They installed it, I paid for the install. Love it. It calls home via 4LTE cellular built into the alarm. Also has a fire sensor. Or you can do a non-monitored system, and if you know it is going off defend your property. If you have to shoot someone to defend yourself if they get aggressive when you confront them, then it will cost more for the lawyer to keep these new strange DA's away where up is down and down is up.

I don't really want a monitored system. I am doing research on line for systems. As for protecting my house and family No Problem!

The best protection anyone can have against people breaking into and stealing from your garage is "Nosey Neighbors"

For the conventional wired systems from a place like ADT or Brinks, the hardware is pretty much all the same. We've purchased two homes in the last 17 years that had existing alarms systems and had ADT installed when we moved in. We got new panel circuit boards, new touchpads and any new devices we chose to add, but the existing panel enclosure, hard wiring and existing contractors and devices stayed. I have done my own aftermarket repairs and even added devices to existing zones. Point is for these traditional types of systems, there isn't much hardware differentiation behind the brand names. If you don't need the monitoring service and can install it yourself, a good commercial electronics store (on line or storefront) can probably set you up if you want a hard wired system. These wired type systems can also have wireless modules added, it takes programming to set up the radio and identify the devices (which is where an ADT comes in). By wireless I don't mean wifi, I mean if you can't string physical wires to your devices.

Look at Simplisafe. You can have it monitored if you like or not. You can choose whether it calls police or not. You also get to choose which type sensors you want and where you locate them. Look through their website to understand what different sensors do. Then call them to discuss because they may have some ideas that you hadn't thought of. When the box arrives you place the main unit which needs 120V power and then stick all the sensors where you want them. They are battery powered and hung w/ pressure tape. You can have your system up and running in 30-45 minutes. One real important step is for you to go to the website and name all your sensors. LR bedroom, front door etc. When the alarm sounds you will get a text message which will tell you which sensor set off the alarm.

couple a questions....
-if you don't have internet, that implies no cable, which implies a shop sitting by itself on a parcel of land

I'm assuming you have electrical power to this shop?
Do you have regular landline telephone service?
Is the shop rural, suburban, or urban?

I have seen battery-powered cell-phone connected monitoring systems in Youtube videos

I had simplisafe before, worked well, all cellular so you dont need internet. Also has a battery backup if they cut power.

Some junkyards keep dogs on the property that "own the yard during darkness. I once worked on a very large bailing machine in a yard like that I noticed the dogs stalking me as the shadows grew long.

The yard manager told me that once he worked in the office trailer too late in the evening nd decided to sleep in the office rather than have to face those dogs.

There is a famous distillery in Scotland that is guarded by a gaggle of geese. If they don't peck you to death, their noise will alert the human security force.

if there is to be no monitoring what is the purpose? You can hear car alarms go off all the time and no one gives a hoot. The catalytic got stolen next door. The other half was out to the trash can about 7:30 pm about dark and heard a wrench and some bolts fall to the ground and thought the neighbor was working on their car because they have been doing a lot of projects. The person kept working even though Cathy was making noise 7' or 8' from them on the other side of the fence. In Seattle this week the DA announced that non-violent crimes - home robberies, car theft, ****** disputes, will not be arrested and instead get a ticket with a notice to appear. What good is an alarm on top of that if no one responds to it to drive the criminal off? There have been so many cases lately where someone with a gun confronts a criminal and the criminal goes free while the person with the gun is accused of threatening someone with violence. I guess for me, if I am sleeping and the alarm goes off, I do want the police to come by. Yes I do know how to defend myself and am a marksman as well but this is a topsy turvy world right now.

Sure some peacocks or gaggle of geese in a rural setting work well too.

I just put up a garage on a rural property I do not live on. I have been using cellular trail cameras and it works pretty good, but I do not expect to catch some one in the act with them, but I did see the county pay a visit before approving a permit, along with the local dogs, some deer, and a black bear.

The dog has to be mean. I bought a dog for security when i lived in a bad part of town. They stole the dog supposedly for dog fighting or training their fighting dogs.

That is true. I made up a system for a friend, a Federal 100 watt siren with battery backup. I it was so loud the neighbors a block away would end up taking care of the thieves for you.

An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure !

Install motion sensor light on all four sides of the building. Motion sensors that trigger a recording of a large dog barking are also good !
Garage door openers can be hacked. Turn them off.
Extra long strike plate that are screwed and through the door jam into the studs help.
Barricade bars work well but I have never seen one that can be removed from the outside.

My shop is close to my house, however internet & cable are not available cell phones only. Our cell service is not great. Im looking at a Honeywell system to set off a siren to alert us if someone breaks again. To the person that suggested insurance, what a joke $1000 deductable, depreciation takes a huge chunk!

So, just because there is no internet, that does not mean you cannot run a network between both buildings to set up security cameras to be viewed remotely. Ruin a cable or three from the house to the shop, put cameras in, connect to an NVR at the house, monitor on your internal TV and remotely if you get internet in the future. You could always get satellite internet to eliminate your connectivity issues.

Additionally, dummy cameras work wonders.

Visonic powermax system runs on a wireless SIM card. Programming is mind bender, the system is stable. Might be overkill, but you could use it as your house alarm and add: Doors, windows, glass, and water sensors/alarms to your garage. It will call your cell, etc., and is highly customizable.

Get a standard ring alarm. It has cellular backup and you can use it as the primary source. $200/year.
