Look at the DGS-1100-08p, I run 7 hikvisions on one. It's $140, smart/managed and will run POE on all ports. You can power cycle ports and monitor wattage.

The Hiks draw max 5-7 W. 2332, 2032 family. I haven't needed to power cycle at all. Those things have been running for 8 months without reboot. I have Chinese models, prior to the firmware shenanigans they pulled to stop the flow of Chinese market cameras getting out of China. It was great buying them for $80. If I had to buy them now, I'd look at Nellys, Milkisbad on ipcamtalk or Wrightwood.

Here I run an i5 Intel NUC (15W), running win 8.1, all automatic updates disabled. it's bolted down good so smash and grabbers can't take it. Runs on an UPS with POE switch, runs on UPS for over an hour with power kill. Try that on a i7 server.

I use Milestone and do motion detection in camera instead of in the NUC. Would need a high power PC to do motion in computer.

I like milestone. It's expensive, but it works great. Certain things I don't mind paying more for it its hassle free, and the wife can easily and always use it, like Sonos.

Recently I was thinking of recording continuously, so you don't need the overhead of image processing/motion sensing. Large, Spinning Hard drives are cheap.

Once you get a few up and running, it's hard to stop adding more and more. So plan for expansion.

Well im happy i found this thread Im settling on a home soon and I plan on adding about 4 cameras. They will all be outdoors and I will get a desktop computer to set them up and use it just for the cameras.

Any recommendations for a complete kit?

I'm going to shoot powerline Ethernet down to my chicken coop where I will have yet another access point and switch or injectors running two cams on the back of the property and a cheapo down in the creek for viewing the wildlife that constantly makes it's way past there.

REOLINK ran out of stock...I don't know what the heck is going on there. Going get my wires run, wait a few weeks and then get more Reolinks or change over to Hikvision if Reolink is going out of business.

Just bought a 1000' spool of direct bury pure copper (not stranded).

Do I really need all this? Nope but I think it's just cooler than hell that I'll be able to watch my entire property from anywhere in the world for less than $1000.00......including covering it in a wifi blanket...oh and my Zwave switches and lighting and motion detectors for a few hundred.

I'm enjoying the hell out of all these gadgets! Hope Al Quaeda doesn't hack in and use them to terrorize me!

My neighbor sells security cameras but knows little about consumer grade or setting up networks and such. His advice.

Who makes their cameras? Are you they just rebadging a camera and then making their own software or both or is it all original?

I leaned towards their product because I damn near can't be sure I am getting a product supported by Hikvision after the purchase. Amazon's ****** description boxes with things like "English version USA" but then 20 complaints in the reviews saying it's a gray market camera and unsupported because the reviews apply to 30 different listings.....annoying and confusing.

So yeah. Haven't found anything I don't like about camera thus far. I wish the pic was a little more clear but I have nothing compare it to. The night vision is awesome. It hits trees that are 120' away.

These are so much easier than wiring long runs back to a dedicated dvr in the house. I have that system also and after running the outside cabling I gave up for doing the insides. Just easier to plug and play and add to the nest app.

But they are pricey. I wait till they are on sale or woot refurbished.

Those look like a good solution! I'm buying cams at $80.00 a pop so I can get 3 for $240.00 VS $220.00 for one of those...as you said cost..but it sort of ends up being wash once you count the cabling and switching for POE setups.

They get really pricey once you start paying for a subscription (one for each camera). No local storage and you're limited to one motion detection alert every 30 minutes. If you pull out of your driveway (triggering an alert) and someone breaks in 25 minutes later, you're out of luck.

When u do it a thousand times a month for years, it becomes second nature and easy! Practice practice.

Get an EZ-RJ45 tool and connectors. Makes it a lot easier.

Even with one of those u still have to untwist and properly arrange the wires.

Those tools have issues by the way.

I cant stand them. Get a real crimper and low voltage scissors!!

Just bought a Hikvision, came a couple days ago. Can't get it setup.

I made a post on IPCAMTALK but had to cut it short because you have to type at hunting and pecking speeds or the characters don't go into the field. Some sort of delay in their auto-save and then you can't cut and paste from word due to anti-spamming software and you can't post links...the forum is just as frustrating as trying to get a camera to work when you don't know SSSS about networking.

Well, nothing now. I had inadvertently changed the password for the camera before I actually unlocked it on the company's website so it was merely a password change.

Good picture on those Hikvision's. Those Amazon reviewers and IPcamtalk guys weren't lying. Definitely more of what I am looking for. The picture is much more "fisheyed" (larger field of view) and much more crisp.

Now I am having issues getting the camera attached to their app. I can view the camera by looking at the IP address or on their mobile app but not on my PC. In other words I can't get the camera to work through their app....says the video stream is encrypted and to change it in the settings but I can't find any such thing.........more homework for me today.

Are you talking about viewing the live feed in a browser on your PC?

Make sure you are using FireFox or Internet Explorer. Then when prompted, download and install the plugin

Also here is a handy program - ONVIF Device Manager
Just enter your username and password (assuming all cameras use the same) and it will find all the cameras on your network, display their IP addresses, settings and show the live feed

I got 4 different types of cameras for my system and same issues. one I had and lost. the hikavision I have I cannot use motion detection on my system. the camera itself I can but if connected to my nvr I can't but the dahua one I can no problem. both are comparable visually. i'll be sticking to what works I guess.

I'm reposting what I said in a couple previous security threads.

Like others have said, you are not going to stop a determined / experienced thief but you can make it easier for law enforcement to catch them.

On my garage, I put in a commercial steel entry door & frame with commercial grade lockset & deadbolt. Windows are 15 ft above grade and the overhead doors are insulated metal. If someone wants in, they can just ram the overhead doors. My cameras however, should catch the action.

Motion sensing lights make a good deterrent at night. Motion lights with built in camera are even better. A friend, who got robbed when away, after the incident, put up motion sensing lights with the built in cam. He found a few occasions, when checking the cards, of people setting off the light and running away. There are several brands out there, just go with the higher resolution cams.

I prefer the bird house or other covert type cameras. Reason is, a guy that I know who has a junk yard told me the culprits wear hoodies or ski mask and show up on cam but can't ID them. He has since removed all of his camera warning signs and has hidden his cams.

My neighbor is a retired State Trooper and told me they have a very good idea of who the local hooligans are. They just need enough evidence to tie them to the crime.

Set up a camera or two for photographing vehicles. A time stamped photo or video of someone in a hoodie may not be enough for probable cause but along with time stamped vehicle photos or video, they may have a better chance of bringing someone in for questioning. The more evidence the better.

We had a suspicious vehicle cruising the road last summer. Pulled clips of the vehicle from game cam and surveillance cam then neighbor distributed to State Police, Local Police & Sheriff. The vehicle had been reported before. With the photos, they were found and confronted by the Sheriff. They were from away and running scams in the area. Haven't seen them since.

Then you always have the big bad dog option.

Pretty much. You can only do so much. At a certain point you gotta let them in or else you'll spend more fixing the damage from the break-in VS just replacing the **** they got a hold of.

At least with the cameras and motion sensors I got I won't rack my brain or be overly suspicious of a neighbor or something.

It should work with all ONVIF cameras. ONVIF is a standard to standardize all the different camera interfaces/protocols/etc. That said, with any standard there are always people that don't quite implement it correctly.

I would not buy a non-ONVIF camera.

Thats a lot of cams - I would run it past Fenderman on IPCamTalk and see what he has to say about the CPU usage

Also keep in mind sometimes it is easier to use PoE injectors instead of PoE switches

16 cams is a lot even on a dedicated machine. To give you an idea my machine is an i7 5770 which is no slouch. I currently have four cams of the same model you're looking at. I'm running about 60% cpu utilization and the 7TB recording limit keeps me about a week worth of video. At 16 came your likely to max out cpu on any machine available today and even at raid 0 on the drives you're going to only get about 4 days of video.

I just installed a 8 channel 4-camera system with night vision around my house, literally 3 weeks ago. Even though I've been in IT for 20 years with a BS in Comp Science I simply drove down to my local Walmart (cheaper than amazon at the time) and picked up the NightOwl camera kit complete with a 1TB drive, DVR, cameras, 60ft cables for $250.

The hardest part was running cables through the attic but took half of a Sat. The rest took may be an hr and have a camera system with Motion sensing alarms, recording etc and I have a hole punched through my firewall to watch it from anywhere on the road on my smart phone.

I also have motion sensing LED lights around the house. We live in a safe and quiet area but lately a couple of houses on the street were put up for rent and I don't like some of the teenagers hanging around one of the houses. I've even had to yell at them once because they were peeling out on the street with pets, kids playing in the front yards.

Although the biggest fear I have is a home invasion at night when I'm half asleep and groggy- ever since we lost our 70lbs ACD/Akita mix to cancer I feel naked at night not having that alerting and first engagement system while I unlock and arm my home defense weapons.

I'm considering ADT for the peace of mind and I hear the yard sign is a big deterrent.

So it sounds like the consensus is that you need a dedicated PC? Are there any NVRs that are up to the task of managing a handful of cameras?

16 cams is a lot even on a dedicated machine. To give you an idea my machine is an i7 5770 which is no slouch. I currently have four cams of the same model you're looking at. I'm running about 60% cpu utilization and the 7TB recording limit keeps me about a week worth of video. At 16 came your likely to max out cpu on any machine available today and even at raid 0 on the drives you're going to only get about 4 days of video.

That would depend on the software you use, where motion detection is done, and a bunch of other things. First, if you are only getting a week on 4 cameras and 4TB, you are probably at the 30fps frame rate which is pretty unnecessary, IMO. Second, if your software is doing motion detection and/or transcoding the code... that's a recipe for high CPU usage and in turn, more power usage.

I have a total of 10 cameras now recording full-resolution video at about 9% CPU usage on a single core. Some cameras are full FPS, others are set to 4-8FPS. I think I have about a month and a half of video storage, and that is with much of the drive (or rather, a ZFS mirror with 4TB drives) in use for other backup stuff.

Just to jump onboard, does this punchlist sound halfway decent?

-16x Hikvison cameras
-Dedicated computer-i7, 8gb ram, SSD for OS, 4x 4TB drives for storage
-Blue Iris Software
-POE switches, keep runs under 100m
-Big UPS
-4TB NAS in detached garage for backup (on UPS)

I would double the ram.

The NAS is overkill if u run the drives in the computer on raid 1 or 5.

Recently purchased this for my home after a number of thefts in the area.. one key incident left a man dead after he was confronted by the home owner while stealing a truck and shot. ( here in Canada you can't protect anything you own) So this is my next best alternative..

4 Foscam HD cameras, 720P H 264 video compression, Motion detection, POE RJ45 port ( transfers power and data via single cable), 1 NVR , 4-ch 720P/960P HD IP camera access, H.264 main profile video compression, Supports HDMI and VGA local display. I'll also be running blue iris software to my phone etc.

A good family friend installs these systems, and should have it installed next week. The system, installed and configured along with reprogramming my computer etc will still have me just under $1000 which won't break the bank for some extra piece of mind while I'm away at work. Plus I have the option of adding cameras which I'll likely do in the near future after I get the hang of this!.

If you're buying drives just for this, look for DVR or NAS models. They tend to run a slower spindle speed but you don't need high performance as much as you need reliability. Sign up on the newegg email list and watch for some on sale.

I hate to say this - but over on IPCamTalk - they hate Foscam...

It really is a 'starter' camera for people who do not know any better. I actually have a couple but once I stumbled on IPCamTalk and Hikvision - they are sitting in a box somewhere

Do yourself a favor and look at the Hikvision - you really do not need PZT if that is why you are buying them

I think they actually started IPCamTalk because there was another forum before and if you mentioned anything bad about Foscam it would get edited or deleted (can't remember the name of the other forum at the moment)

Oh great.. wasted money?.. I know absolutely nothing about that stuff and I'm not a tech guy by any means. The people I talked to who had them thought they were really great, I've seen a few systems that were complete junk as far as visual quality goes.. these were really crisp and clear both at day and night... I guess time will tell? Maybe I'll have to sell these and buy all new ones : $
