hi,

im new to the forums. so far i have had a great time here reading and checking out some of the beautirul garages you guys have put together. anyhow, i have decided to use ucoatit on my recently remodled garage. i talked to a rep at ucoatit today and he told me that free shipping is possible if you have a flyer / coupon. he said that these are often given out at car shows or home improvement shows (sema for example). if anyone has one of these codes i would really appreciate it, as im already WAY over budget on my garage :)

RUN AWAY FROM U COAT IT!
I did a lot of research and decided on U Coat IT. Big mistake, multiple tire patch lifting even when the tires are stone cold. I called them on their warranty, they sent me a "test kit" I did the testing they requested. They day it is not their failure and offered to sell me more to redo it. Now why would I ever apply more of their product when it lifts at tire patches? I said NO, I want my money back, they said NO. I will tell my story to the day I die, U COAT IT *****.

BTW, I followed their instructions to the letter, the floor was fresh concrete but cured for 3 times the amount of their recommended time.

I used Ucoat It and it worked fine for me. Painting concrete can be a pain sometimes. Alot of things can effect the paint, Especially epoxy. When I sold paint we would only warranty floor finishes if you had a vapor barrier under the concrete, and sometimes we would have a sales rep. on hand for a large job.

Gotta throw one good note in for UCoatIt. Mine is working superbly and exactly as the said it would. It cleans up easy, isn't too slick and I really like the look. I would strongly suggest you put their Automotive AV topcoat on their product however. It made a world of difference in the finish. Mine has been down for several months now. Only time could change my mind.

My pictures are out there in another post on this board. Here's the link: http://garagejunkies.net/showthread.php?t=1445

Just a "bump" for props to UCoat It. I had to make a repair where I improperly prepared the floor ( it had silicone in it from tire dressings ). I did not take any special precautions about removing them first and applied the coating over it. Silicone is a NON-STICK surface, and some coating did not adhere. I followed the tech advice from my local UCoat It dealer and fixed the trouble spot. It has not been as issue since! Three years and counting.

UCoatIt Durability

I'm more interested to hear from someone who installed this product three YEARS ago. How has it held up? Would you buy it again?

It looks wonderful when its new.

It looks great after 6 months and a winters worth of road salt. Cleans up very easily.

"I'm more interested to hear from someone who installed this product three YEARS ago." It's been down in my son's garage for 4 years.

"How has it held up?"
It's still there, all of it. It still looks good, one bay has daily traffic, the other is used as a workshop. No tire "pick up" anywhere. I did major repairs to his car when it was only 3 weeks old and it held up like nothing ever happened.

"Would you buy it again?"
In a heartbeat. I plan on using it the garage I'm finishing now.

My Dad put it down in his shop two years ago and he LOVES it. He keeps trying to talk me into doing mine, but the cost scares the **** out of me.

I have used UCoat-It, EpoxyCoat, Quikrete, Rustoleum, Wolverine, and Griot's Garage brands.

Here's my rank and short explanation:

#1. Wolverine.
The highest quality and the best value. A 2 product 3 coat 100% solids system.

#2. Epoxy-Coat.
Value pretty much equal to Wolverine but compares only to Wolverine's LiquaTile product. A durable 1-step single-coat 100% solids epoxy that does not have the nice finished look that the Wolverine system gives.

#3. Griot's Garage.
Best value for a water-based epoxy. Thicker consistency than the next two water-based products. Nice glossy finish for a single non-cleared product.

#4. and #5 Rustoleum and Quikrete.
Both are almost identical and OK products for a water-based product. Also both are similar to the Griot's Garage product but are not as good of value.

#6. U-Coat-It.
By far the worst value (just do the math). I would never use this water-based product again nor recommend it to anyone.

And, btw, I have never had adhesion problems with any of the above.

Hey I just joined up! :)

Can someone help me with a coupon? That would be great!

I'm about to pull the trigger on new concrete ( 30 days old) 1200 sq feet epoxy floor...automotive finish ( i'll have a lift too in my new garage)

Automotive finish Beige will cost well over 1000 bucks for U coat it... so please help!

Roger 55, So many people seem to have had such good luck with Ucoat-it, so what's up with Wolverine...and the others rated higher than UCI.... cheaper? It would need to be to be rated so high in previous post IMO...

The only thing I've used is Rustoleum on very old concrete and it pulled up but also got skateboard marks and tire prints.

And you rate it better than automotive finish (?) U coat it?

Thanks, Rambo Benson ( real name, it's swedish ancestry...just to defuse the ribbing up front, lol !)

Please see posts #29 and #30 in the following thread:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26308

UCoat-It is a good quality epoxy but no better than the other water based epoxies IMO. And, it is more expensive than the others. It does have a glossy finish and I do recommend staying away from the semi-gloss finish epoxies as they are more prone to tire marks. Sounds like you used a semi-gloss Rustoleum. When I used the Rustoleum, I used the glossy clear on top.

The key to adhesion is prep. If you use acid, the finish should feel like sandpaper afterwards. If it doesn't, keep using more acid until it does. It doesn't matter if it's new concrete or old, concrete should have a rough profile for good adhesion. I recommend grinding versus acid as I explained in the thread I provided a link to.

With a sandpaper texture, an epoxy system with only a 5 mil final thickness can and does wear through. Also, a 5 mil thickness isn't really enough to smooth out that sandpaper texture in the first place, leaving the surface a little rough. That leads to faster wear.

Hi Dennis Rambo, yep we must both have Peter Gunnarson Rambo as a G-G-G-G-G-Great Grandfather. Google him and the Kalmar Nykel if you have not already, you will be amazed!
I guess you get the same ribbing I get... I actually had a closer cousin John Rambo who was a bit of a mercenary and was killed in a military cargo plane crash in Africa! Just a fluke that he was in similar kind of lifestyle as the movie Rambo. :)

Hello Roger. Really enjoyed your gallery! Man you are one hard working guy. Thanks for all the information, now I understand where you are coming from. Need sandpaper finish and as a result need thicker base as well as for the cost. Thanks VERY much!

I'll visit back soon.

Oh, hey anyone know how to get a coupon??? I almost forgot my original question, same as the author of this thread!

Yeah, I know this is an old thread, but I have not found any information on coupons or discounts being offered by U Coat It. Does anyone have any new information they can share?

I went against the grain from everyone here and I found some Dupont Corlar 2.1( 25p) locally. The State of SC maintenance shop uses this same coating in their bus shop. So I felt it would hold up to my uses. Its a 1 to 1 ratio high solids epoxy( over 70% solid) and I have been xtremely happy with the results. I had 8 gals (4 epoxy - 4 activator ) and did 2 coats in a 900sq ft shop. I rolled 1/2 the floor with 2 gals and cross rolled the same side a few hrs later with the other 2 gals . Then the next day did the other half with the same procedure. The main reason I went with Dupont Corlar over the 100% solids was pot life. Some of the 100% solids have only a 20 min pot life before its useless . The epoxy I used had a 8hr pot life so I could apply it at reasonable pace. My cost was $120 per 2 gal kit which I felt was economical and it is available locally should I decide to add another coat later on. My floor seems to be durable, I've had a Electric golf cart spill a small quantity of battery acid ( < 1 ounces) on it and it just wiped up with no harm to the surface.
One thing I didn't do was add some type of friction additive, so when the floor is wet it is slippery.

I will try out U Coat It because they have great customer service. They also sent me a color sample at their cost which helped me confirm how the color will look. Their site has great information on how to prep the floor and how to apply each coat. I looked at similar epoxy companies and could not find much information on their products.

I have used UCoatit before and been very pleased with the results. I agree they were very helpful before the sale and just as much after I purchased the product. I called a few times to make sure I was doing it right and they always had the answers I needed and were re-assuring. I got a coupon from them a couple of years ago by signing up for their newsletter on the website. I don't think I've gotten any other news than the discount coupon come to think of it, but hey, it was worth it. It was emailed to me and I saved some $$.

Keep in mind that UCoat-it is approximately 40% solids. That means that approximately 60% of their product evaporates away when it is drying/curing.
Also, their product is one of the most if not the most expensive per gallon. Last time I checked it was $99.96 per gallon (cheaper non-kit price). You can buy 100% solids epoxy for $75 a gallon through Wolverine or Epoxy Coat. You can also find other 70 to 75% solid products for $70 a gallon or so.

The only disadvantage to 100% solids epoxies are that the working time is less. But I found that the Wolverine products gave me plenty of working time as long as I only covered about 300 square feet at a time. Even other ~75% solids epoxies have long working times.

60% more product for 30% less cost is a huge difference in price. That 10% coupon doesn't make much of a dent in that.

Another thing to consider is that the UCoat-it system has a design cured thickness of about 5 mils. This is very, very thin. Other systems like Wolverine are a 25 mil finished thickness. When I used UCoat-it, I did have wear through issues.

If I buy U Coat It now and plan on doing the floors when it gets warmer (maybe Spring), should I mix the products once in a while to prevent them for separating?

If it does reach 5 mills in thickness, I am fine with that since that is half a centimeter.

If you are going to store epoxy or paint products then "rotate" them, or turn the pigmented parts over as often as you can, at least once a month. Stir them thoroughly before you activate them. If you store it over the winter, have it shaken at a paint store before using it.

Not quite. That's "5 mils" as in "5 thousands of an inch".

And .005" = 0.0127 cm., or in other words it would take about 393 layers at 5 mils each to have a coating a half centimeter in depth.

Just for the record, our system with BondTite/LiquaTile/EnduraShield is about 23 mils thick, and it would take about 85 layers to make a half centimeter thick coat.

BTW- There are plenty of situations where heavy traffic or other needs will demand a coating half centimeter, or more, thick. However to build up to that depth usually something like quartz or other aggregates are added to the coatings.

Not to forget situations where the whole floor would be coated at 23+ mils, but specific low points would first be leveled out with material 250+ mils.
