Well the Elroy realized this evening that he carriers a Proto with him all the time. Ya see Pops is an Electrical Engineer and sold Louis Allis for 30+ years. As you can see this was a sample from Cutler Hammer. This little offical Proto has been in Elroy's pocket from at least 1968 on.

Elroy has a mighty fine Proto screwdriver there. I've been wanting one of those for years, but found none here in Hawaii and they go for crazy money on ebay. :(

Really. So what do you call "crazy" money. We bets there is a chrome plated one floating around at Pops house somewhere. If you advise what crazy is he just might find it.:lol_hitti

I think there was one on ebay for more than $100 IIRC. I saw it in another thread here.

Boy that is crazy.

Nope, lets rephrase that:

The dumb *** that would spend $100 for that is a fool and you know what happens to fools and their money.

Who wants to be a fool?

Pops would laugh all the way to the Bank.

Make that an FDIC insured Bank.

I bet there would be a number of knuckleheads on here that would pay $100 for a genuine Elroy's Pop's key ring Proto screwdriver.

I might be one of them. :)

Well Elroy, let me put it this way. The vast majority of my tools are Proto, including lots of 500 sets, a 3/4 set, puller sets, vintage display sets; hey, you get the idea. I like Proto. But, on Ebay for the past seven years, I've bid up to $20 on those little screwdrivers and never won a single one. Apparently, these items are highly collectible. :dunno:

Bolster carries the same 'driver as Elroy. Although recently Bolster downgraded from a Proto to a Plomb. And on special days he upgrades to an Atwood tool.

I don't mean to be "sneaking in evolution," but here's a photo I took some time ago of the family tree...

FYI, at least some of the people bidding up these pocket 'drivers are the EDC crowd (=Every Day Carry), sort of like grown-up boy scouts who obsess about being prepared. I count myself as one of them.

That wouldn't be a down grade in Elroy's book

If you have these little jewels handy would you be so kind as to post up a few shots of that old one on the left.

Here are pics of the two I have now. The one on the left is what I carry every day and I do use it from time to time. The one on the right I got last month or so.

There for awhile they where going pretty high. But that is the nature of eBay high one day low the next. Just keep watching.

One more tool on my list of things to keep my eye out for. Question, has anyone every filled their tool wish list before their money ran out or they before they died? I'm afraid the answer is no amongst this crowd.:bounce:

Elroy,

Thanks for posting the Proto key-ring screwdriver. I have one of these too, from the mid 1960's. Mine is stamped "Hueneme Hdwe." on the reverse side. I had almost forgotton about it until your post.

Thanks for all the pics! I'm kind of partial to the PLOMB one. That font gets me every time... An if there's a pebble grain version...

Hopefully these will give you some idea.
The Proto with "Stan Baar" was my father's and dates from
late 1958 or so. The P&C belonged to my uncle,
"H.E. Ktretchmer" from around same time or perhaps earlier.

Those Snap-ons actually have more utility. I like them. I don't understand why they are comparatively so inexpensive.

All of the old timers at the cement plant I work at have these. I've been trying to find one for a decent price, but haven't had any luck yet.

Why? According to the TSA, you can carry on up to a 7" screwdriver.

I don't know about you, but I think I could do more damage with a 6.5" screwdriver than I could do with a 2" blade pocketknife (which of course isn't allowed!)

Excuse the formatting - from the TSA website.

There's no problem carrying a key-type screwdriver tool through airports, as long as it is not sharpened. I do it all the time. In fact I carry an even larger Atwood tool (called a gasbaby) on my keyring and it sails right through.

Used to carry sharp pointed scissors of the legal length until I lost them. Those scissors were held together with a single screw. If the screw came undone you had two 6" knives. Go figure!

Not sure about entering a federal building, they are very aggressive with security.

I fly alot for work, about 170+ flights a year. Once I had to check in a jet sweat set because it was refused. Most TSA I have talked to say they go by a 6" or less rule....of course anything sharp doesnt pass. A lot of it is left up to the TSA supervisor discretion.

Something interesting is my larger offshore fishing reels get a bag check ONLY when they are spooled up with line....I asked why they only get a bag check with line on...(when the reel isnt spooled with line it passes). The TSA guy under his breath told me that when it has line on it it looks like some kind of explosive device?!?!? I thought that was wierd...but 3 different TSA officers said the same thing. :wtf:
