Semi-Smart Garage Door

Hey folks,

My garage currently has 1 motorized bay, and two manual. I'm thinking of upgrading all three bays to motorized, but this brings me to a problem: I want a secure garage door opener.

I don't want one of the 'smart' garage doors that hook to phones. Partially because I dislike smart appliances, and their tendency to listen/spy/etc on the users, and partially because I don't trust them to be almost as easy to crack as the statically coded ones.

At the same time, I don't want one of the statically coded ones, for obvious reasons.

Has anyone found a garage door opener that actually seems to be secure against hacking?

I'm half-suspecting that my solution to this will be to homebrew something using a raspberry pi, but I wanted to ask first, in the hopes that maybe someone else had similar concerns to me.

The "rolling codes" isn't enough for you ?
There's a fair number of articles out there on how to quickly and easily bypass those.

Truthfully, I only have one car desirable enough to be a theft target, but the other two are of great personal importance, and I'd hate to have them swiped.

Even if you buy an opener with “smart” features, if you don’t set them up and connect it to a network, they are no different than any other garage door opener.

On the issue of static/rolling codes, it’s irrelevant as the easiest way to defeat most openers is to stick something in the top edge of the door and get to the pull string/disconnect latch.

Buy your favorite opener. Don't connect it to the web. Put a few manual door locks on the door for security. Leave the manual locks unlocked if your going in and out. When done for the day, week, month lock the manuals.

Our Liftmaster 8500's have a electronic deadbolt that works quite well. Still have the manuals for when we're gone.

That is why you don't put the handle on the rope.

I have a door shield... to prevent that trick all together.

I also don't have the ropes hooked up...

I also have DC motors with battery backup...

I also have three camera systems... all looking at each other...

That's probably the best option, and one I hadn't really considered (kind of dumb, since my two other doors currently use manual locks, but let's ignore that).

That deadbolt uses the same security tech and signal as the opener. I know it's not anywhere near as convenient, but if your that concerned when you're away, use the original manual bar lock that came on the door.
