And if you screw something up on the drawing, you can immediately correct it. I love having a plasma table

I agree, It's pretty handy when your building/ repairing something and you need a special bracket, To be able to walk over to the computer draw a part out and have a the plasma table cut out a few minutes later. Rather then waiting days for your parts to be ready Or making the part the old school way with grinders, bandsaw, and drill press.

Use SCS constantly. Great service. Good Pricing. Their online tool and quoting is great. Have them make custom gussets, house numbers, specialty SLIM wrenches, rough shapes for forge projects, production runs, one-off proto parts, and all sorts of stuff. Got a set of brackets from them three days ago and waiting for some .188" cuts for a steel forge work stand I am building. Matt Talley Celtic Cross Build.jpgWLFR8096.JPG

Was reading
Like any other manufacturing processes, there are pluses and minuses to each. The newer waterjet technology (OMAX tilt-a-jet or A-Jet for example) has very little clean up from taper. But with thicker material (several inches thick), the velocity does slow down and can create issues.

The laser has just as much issues with clean up, as the material gets thicker. But more importantly you have to consider material properties. A laser creates a heat effect zone which could cause serious strength issues, and also difficulty machining later.

For aluminum 1/4" Plate, waterjet is the way to go.

I was reading this and just wanted to toss my opinion in as for I am a laser programmer and operator. I run Mazak 8 kilowatt fiber optic lasers and cut aluminum with shop air or nitrogen and the speed at which it cuts soft metal like aluminum there is almost no heat. I can cut a part open the door and pick it up with my bare hands and it’s almost hard to feel any heat at all. Im probably a little bias given lasers have been my profession for almost 20 years but the lasers of today cut at a blinding speed with incredible precision without sacrificing the strength of the material. Well just wanted to add my opinion and love reading on here what people are always working on it’s really cool.

If I am designing a male-female press tool for 19 gauge mild steel , how much material does the laser take off in the gap between the 2 pieces ?

just wondering if the width of the cut is close to the thickness of 19 gauge mild steel

Thanks for the info

HERE is a link to Send Cut Send's website where they say that their "Fiber laser kerf ranges from .006″-.015″". A laser kerf will be much finer than the width of 19ga.

Very cool! Is there any way for someone who doesn't know how to create the cutting file to have parts made?

Say someone designs a part and draws everything out with precise measurements... Is there a way for this person to get part made without being friends with someone? Can you pay someone to make this into a file?
Check out Fiverr lots of CAD designers there to help you. https://www.fiverr.com/search/gigs
