Yep, no ****. They are preparing an estimate for me as we speak.... I even read it in the policies...

Lots of strange about this area. I got in trouble with the county this week for wiring my own shop without passing an electrical test and getting an electrical permit. Was quite a mess. I was calling for an electrical inspection and they never came so I kept going... the reason they didn’t come was I didn’t have a permit so they were confused...

But all that was thankfully resolved..

Now the power company wants money for me to have electrical.....

No permit, no inspections. Not even supposed to start the work until one is issued.

The story is longer than what I posted and I geuss not relevant to the discussion at hand. Was just saying I haven’t encountered some of the things that New Mexico has in place before when I’ve done this in other areas.

I did have a building permit and did indicate I was doing it myself. Somewhere along the way I didn’t realize I needed a separate electrical permit. I thought I had explained my plans to the department but I needed to follow up with more permits than what I had.

It’s still a little confusing to me as the permit I got is for working on a “single family dwelling”. I wanted a rough in inspection of a garage that is 100’ away from the dwelling. But NM considers a dwelling to be anything on your property. Maybe that’s how it’s considered in some other areas too, but it confused me.

I was working the tie in situation with the power company separately. The demark and scope was confusing. I thought I had involved all who needed involved.

At any rate it got sorted and they were willing to work with me after they chewed on me a while.

If you can tell them you are putting in a bigger service because you load will increase then the utility will probably eat most of the cost. Problem is a non commercial shop doesn't have much continuous load. Minimal increased revenue means you are going to pay for the new transformer.

Run into this all the time with grain bins and dryers. They only have a lot of load for a month out of the year. One guy looked into getting three phase and it was going to cost about 80,000 for the power company to rebuild a couple miles of line and bring it onto his yard.

OP either needs a up-sized transformer or he doesnt, right?

If he really, truly needs a larger transformer for increased loads, then his utility SHOULD provide the equipment THEY need to supply his electrical needs.

If he really wont use more power, and someone just WANTS a bigger transformer to feel warm and fuzzy- and for that reason the poco is saying 'you need to pay, it really isnt needed'- Then why put one in??

OPs confusion about the permitting process is...uh..interesting. One call and they dont come out to inspect, I am on the phone and figuring it out. Not going forward.....

If OP posted his POCO name, I suspect people might look at that pocos' rules, if they are on line....
