I'm up here in reasonably mild western Oregon; I have a 20', 2 40' and 2 40' Hi Cubes - only the 20' has a roof over it so far; between that and a couple trees, that one sees NO SUN - result is no condensation, and temps INSIDE are exactly the same as OUTSIDE...
HUGE difference from the 40's, NONE of which (yet) have any shade - on just a partially sunny day, I've measured temps inside up to 140 degrees; on full sun days, it gets that warm even with a 20" exhaust fan at each container's door (no other vents yet, working on burglar/pest proof greenhouse kits (exhaust shutter fan, inlet louvers on shaded other end)
As it is now, the door ends of the un-shaded ones is barely tolerable within 15 feet of the doors with fans on - the closed end gets somewhere between 130 and 150 on clear days.
My point - in your area, without SHADE your containers would probably be capable of cooking pizza's inside. Knowing what I know now, there is absolutely NO WAY I would put up a roof that didn't COMPLETELY SHADE all parts of the containers. Only reason mine aren't ALREADY roofed is time/money/energy (I'm 75, NOT rich)
When any/all of my "impediments" change, I have a 48x60 pole structure/6" slab planned, both Hi-Cubes will be paralleled along one long side (still under the roof) leaving me a 30x60 slab area for working on equipment; the 2 containers will get welded together, with one side being a weld shop and the other for machining/tool storage - the weld side will have a full-length gantry, steel rack along one side and an 8' long "pass-thru" by the end doors. Rough sketch below... Steve
EDIT - the sketch shows the crane at 30' long, it'll probably end up closer to 35...
