shop heater recommendation - propane

If you very well insulated I would recommend some kind of vented heater. A ventless on will put lots of water vapor in the air.
Something like a modine hanging heater is going to be the cheapest/less space option, but no very efficient nor good circulation but that may be fine if its just for when you in the shop.
A radiant heater maybe more efficient/better heating of you due to being radiant but a little more money up front
Using an actual high efficient furnace will be, well, more efficient and better heat distribution(if piped correctly). The upfront cost will be made up for in fuel efficiency if you heat the garage all the time. More difficult install than the other options.

Its one big open space. I had it in my mind to run a vented heater as that is what I am replacing. just a unit hanging from the cieling, but I'm open to other solutions. I could do a wall mount. I don't have the real estate to do a floor mount.
It will only be run when I am in the shop working, no desire to run duct work. Not overly concerned about water vapor. It'll only be running for hours at a time, not a full time furnace.

The good news is they are cheap, simple, and produce heat.
The bad news is that in climates with moisture, you're keeping that moisture inside.
We don't have to "aux heat" (on propane) that much so they work fine here.

I caught that and factored it in.I should mention I'm in NE Indiana. temps below 0* happen but aren't frequent. If it's that cold I'm not going into the shop unless I have to! ;D
If it's an "emergency heat" deal, I tend to go with simple and brutal. Vented propane is probably better moisture side, depends on how much hassle that is.
Modine Hot Dawg has been fine in my just over 400 SQFT garage
