Some good stuff to think about. Do you mind posting a pic of your rack setup? My basement is unfinished, so I feel like I need to get that planned out before I can really commit to a network layout.

I've had some limited experience running commands to troubleshoot networks driven Cisco routers and switches, rommon, all that fun stuff, but not designing all the fancy network architecture (I'm more on the software side of things than the network).

Making a Cisco switch a "dumb router" is about 4 lines once you get into the switch. One Vlan, a command to make the router accept new physical port hook ups faster, turn on POE, and make all the ports active.

Sure, here's a photo. For me, it was just dropping all the CAT6 in a central location and making sure I had at least one dedicated 20A power supply (I've actually got two circuits in there). This closet does have an exhaust fan, but it's turned out to be unnecessary.

The white thing is a Ubiquiti "Dream Machine" - it handles all of the security cameras and network routing among other things.

Total power use here is 160 watts for all of it.

Lightning risk has bitten me twice on the internal cat 5/6 at a house. Even on 3 acres, a lightening strike across the street induced current in the wire and created very obvious burns at the plugs... Also fried several pieces of equipment. All of this wire was internal to the house. Shielded wire might be a lot better, but the real solution seems to be properly grounding all of it.

If I was going to do do it again, I'd run fiber between the shop and house - that run is 200 feet.

I know this is an old thread, i thought i would throw my .02 in. if you want to extend a network to a remote location that is less than 331 cable feet away. meaning can i reach it with a wire under 331' your best bang for the buck is have a conduit buried at least 3/4" in diameter 1/2 conduit is just too darn small. cat5e is plenty for what you want *but order a direct burial rated cat5e. direct burial has a jelly substance inside it as well as a oxygen and uv jacket on it. it cost a little more but well worth it. you could also go the wireless ptp bridge if you wanted to but it would be more $ and it is almost a guarantee that additional hardware components that the ptp wireless setup will cost more and have more long term maintenance expenses than having the right type of cat5e cable rated and conduited

*edit also be sure to properly ground all of your gear on each end (house and shop) if you have any questions regarding grounding or other PM me too much to type lol

Yeah, properly grounding everything. Read the Motorola Grounding document, I don't remember the exact title. It might still be around on the internet as a pdf.

edit.

Lightning hit the transformer that's run between the garage and house. Found ground and went into the Cat6 cable. Fried several segments of the network and my laptop's ethernet port. Went to fiber when I replaced it.

Assuming you are being sarcastic, but in case not that is only for using a phone on cat 5/6 wiring.

I'm usually not a smartass on here, but I swear this one is posted at least once a week and just went for it.

I've suggested Power Line Ethernet adapters on the forum if they don't want to dig and route a Cat6 cable probably 50 times.

I've tried them and depending on your electrical setup and distance, they may not be a viable solution... At least this was true in my case. If they do work, they're a great simple solution.

I've had them running internet to my garage for about 5 or 6 years now. It cuts down the speed a bit, but that's fine for my garage.

Well you have someone else who wants to PM you about this now  I am currently in the process of running cat 6 to the shop. Just finished hardwiring all of my AP backhauls in my house and am a little worried about this ground concern.
I haven't grounded any of the POE to AP runs up in my attic from the managed switch. I dont think I need to?

But for the shop........ do I just buy an ethernet surge protector thing and run the ethernet through that before i bring it into my patch panel and onto the switch? Stick the ethernet surge protector in my network rack? I do have an unused 10gauge ground wire at my rack that ties back into the house ground (unfortunately ground rod is about 45 ft away)

My garage is about 90 feet from internet in the house and my iphone works for internet and ipad works also using the phone as a modem. I have netgear orbi with 1 satellite as internet connection in the house. House is fed with fiberoptic cable. Hope I'm saying all this right as I am no expert by any means.

Sadly the OP has never returned to let us know what option was used in the effort to connect his garage/shop.
