If you want to shorten the cords I would suggest Neutrik connectors. I have done it for many of my sanders and grinders. You can then have any length of cord you want as you can make spares or use a single cord for many tools switching out as needed.

I won't go back to long cords again on those tools. The positives outweigh the negatives for my use.

They use those connectors for speaker power and monitors that connect together to make much larger displays. While building a booth last year the customer had made up all their own power cords using that type of fitting. The issue with them was that they have very small screws to hook the power wire to and not much space between the connections. They had several made up with strands not in fully and caused his distribution box to trip the breakers several times until it finally blew the 100a main feed breaker. They are a poor design if you really don't take your time when assembling them. I see lots of electrical equipment where I work that comes from other countries. Some of it is just scary. Exposed connections and lots of times no ground termination in the equipment. We will not hook up a customers equipment without a ground to the chassis.

my buddy shortens all his contracting tools to about 12" and puts on twist lock connectors, uses an extension cord with twistlock. nice thing is never have to wrap cords up on circular saws etc.. and the plug never pops out and no tying a knot in the cords.... I kinda like it

Lets toss in PVC airlines....then we'll have a really fun discussion.

I like my long power cords. Especially on my circular saw.....nothing more fun than ripping a board and the plug head gets stuck on the edge of the board.

Like most here, I put longer cords on my tools, but only when the original cord had a problem. I also like to put a cut off coloured (i.e. not black) extension cord on.

Perhaps a short cord on the compressor, that's connected to the PVC lines, being used to blow off the lawn mower with headlights, in the HMO after 10pm.

There was a trend back in the 1970s for manufacturers to sell power tools with 12" long cords on them, but the trend didn't last very long. It will work, but it's up to your personal preference.

I still have two 1975-6 B&D drills w/12" cords. They both still work, probably because it is such a hassle to use an extension cord EVERY time that I use them that they end up just sitting on the shelf.

I have a number of corded electrical power hand tools (of course more and more battery ones too).

Trying to improve my shop and I hate all the cords.

Does it make any sense to shorten the cords down to 12" or less and just use one extension cord to the nearest outlet?

I know it would require the effort to cut and splice. But when I'm ready to put the tool away, I don't have to fool with all the cords.

Thanks!

This is not a serious question.

Like saying that you will make you gas tank smaller and travel with some bottles of gas. Or something.

Of course it's a serious question. The mental capacity of someone that can't envision why a short cord could be useful should also be seriously questioned.

Wow. Then perhaps we should just do away with the cord all together and have the plug right on the handle?
