I thought that was your portable defibrillator for all of us old farts who (or one day will ) visit your shop!

Nope that’s a boat anchor. For defibrillator, a flash from Fannie Mae hopefully works. If not, a shot of tequila should fit the bill.

So true. Though one task was completed, the list actually grew by 4. What!!!!

Great example of the law of natural garage project list expansion!

Garage project lists have no measurable end and one solution only leads to many more items to be added. You can only compartmentalise or timebox list items for a short time. It is well known that new tools and especially new machines can accelerate the increase of project lists items. However, project cars, boats and homes have an exponential effect. Never discount the full breadth of maintenance, family and social impacts on a project list either. It is well known that the only people who really constrain the rate of increase to a steady trickle are those living retired life on a remote farm who shun lists altogether. :lol_hitti

PS. Beware... next you'll want a milling machine and a complement of tooling and accompanying storage! :willy_nil

Groan !!! This has been on a very active basis here in the Florida Chapter. Especially today. And taumac is perhaps one of the main enablers. In a close contest with Cbacres.

I will admit that having a lathe and a mill has made life a little easier. Everyone should have one, or two of each. And of course, you need a complete set of tools for for your wood working area, for your metal working area, and your repair area. Because who wants to walk across the shop to get a screw driver, only to return it 10 minutes later.

Lest you think I jest, here are our boxes. The first is for my wife's wood working area. The next two are main boxes, left for fabricating tools, right is regular mechanics tools. The final is for the metal machining area. I need a much bigger box for the metal machining area, and the top of the fabricating box isn't packed.........yet:lol_hitti

Hey I like the way you think. I have a set of tools on woodworking pegboard, in mobile cart and stationary boxes. As soon as I get a drawer mounted on main bench (****, another project) there will be basic screwdrivers, pliers, measuring devices.

p.s. where’s the Dr. Pepper?

One is never enough. Whatever you have for wood you also need an equivalent for metal. So 2 bandsaws, 2 drill presses, 2 belt sanders. You get the idea. So how did I end up with 3 of so many machines?
And some things need lots extra, like clamps, vises, grinders and...... I better shut up or I might even get pissed at myself for having too many tools.

Most of my woodworking machines are already spoken for and deposits taken. Air dryer is even taken. Couple of people 'thinking about' buying the IR compressor. I'm keeping all of the portable tools in my work truck (but selling the truck). I figured if I can do the quality on-site work that I do with that equipment, then it will be just fine for a small hobby shop. I don't have much experience with metalworking, so I'll be a spectator in that field.

Yeah. I counted 6 grinders. And I actually use 4 of them.

Andrew, I'm OK. I only have five electric angle grinders. One compressor. One, sorry, three welders. We don't count pneumatic tools, right? Is it still a bench grinder if it has wire and EXL wheels? If so, I only have one bench grinder and one buffer. Does a second drill press that isn't on the bench and isn't plugged in count? ****! I'm starting to think I'm one of you.

Damn. I forgot the angle grinders and pneumatic tools. And I admit I counted the buffer as a grinder. Oh and I have the bench grinder converted to a drum sander.

LOL. I guess I have a problem.

John, we need to talk. Because of the enablers, I think I can stock your new shop with wood tools. lol.

Yep, the enablers have definitely filled my shop. 5 Bench grinders (selling 3), 4 vertical bandsaws (selling 2), 2 horizontal bandsaw (1 is parts), 2 buffers (selling 1), 2 sanders (selling 1). So if you’re driving through Hooverville, stop at Mr. Haney’s. I got a deal for you!

Ok, ok. Time to get on with serious material handling. Proudly brought to you by Shorty, always serious, always safe.

To get the lathe out of the trailer, the plan was to use my neighbor’s cherry picker. Unfortunately, they had their double decker race trailer blocking the door.
Ok, if I can remove a 1/2 ton battery box, I can get the lathe unloaded. First step make some jacking points so I can get a furniture dolly under each end. 2cb8c227693d8bf258ea06be52804211.jpg
My riggging required two alterations, little trimming so the end of the jack would fit between verticals and a small lip so rig wouldn’t pop out of holes. Worked perfect 695bbcd715fbbea2666fa917cf2d3401.jpg
To ensure super safe handling, I used a ratchet strap hung from the joist above to keep lathe upright. 61a3d23f278f3f21ae38511a13c96881.jpg
Next step, support the ramp at level and roll the lathe onto the ramp while loft crane assist. When I was ready to lower, I realized the lathe would easily roll down the ramp a-la battery box. Oh no Mr. Bill!!!!! A ratchet strap ran from trailer corner, around the head, to the other trailer corner fit the bill. Keeping slight tension on the crane while letting out the ratchet strap, lathe rolled off like bud-da. 9672ef1ff7b428809fe533e855485db5.jpg

Don't worry. As long as you can count 'em, you just have some tools. When you lose count, then you have a COLLECTION.

So I have a farm tractor collection? Just because I lost count? I feel degraded. Is it OK to buy more after you realize you don't know how many you have? Is need involved anywhere?

Help me out here, Shorty, I'm flailing.

Andy, since tractors are what feed America, you have as many as you want. If they’re driven by several Daisys wearing her dukes, a tank top, ball cap and cowboy boots, then I think you need should buy more tractors Saturday. Remember, pics or it didn’t happen. Lol.

That's even an International!! I'm trying to keep abreast of the farm labor situation. She looks just like my farm hands would look if I could afford to hire any.

Great job on the lathe dismemberment. I mean unloading. Experience is such a great teacher. If you survive the curriculum.

Let the chips fly where they may!!

Sell, there’s no selling things off. GJ law states that you need a min of 3 bench grinders. One for grinder wheels, one for wire wheels and one for buffing. If you TIG well there’s another grinder needed just to grind tungsten. So with selling 3 you’ll be non complainant with GJ law. LOL Now if you take into the fact that you have a shop and a home garage well wouldn’t it be nice to have a grinder at the house for small jobs INSTEAD of getting in the car and driving to the shop the grind or sharpen something? The same thing can be said for other items. Just think how efficient your shop and home garage will work if you have those tools ready to go without changing belts, blades or grinder wheels? See Shorty we enable you to help you be more productive in the shop and home.

It might look a little sketchy to OSHA, but it got the job done. Good job, Shorty. And I am sure it was OK because you were wearing your Florida safety shoes along with sun block to protect your exposed skin.

Yes, Andy you do have a collection, but instead of degraded, you should think of it as elevated. Collectors preserve our resources.

And Shorty, glad you got the lathe off without incident. When are you going to buy the next one? I suggest something with a 35"-40" swing, so you can turn your own wheels if you want.

Somehow this all makes sense. Should I seek professional help? I don't want to go back into one of those stupid jackets where you can't scratch your nose. BOB!!

Thanks guys. Always a good day when it doesn’t end with a trip to the ER.

I’m hoping the lathe teaches that battery box how to act. lol.

No more lathes for me. Now if I could get hold of a plasma cutter I’d slice and dice Mr. Battery box.

Andy, just tell them you’re from the government, then they won’t think you’re crazy.

Andy, it's too hot for jackets in Florida so they just snap on a Heinecuff. It lets me scratch my nose but otherwise I'm completely incapacitated.

Today was more about housekeeping. Wrapped and put away all ratchet straps I used In transporting lathe. When I went to put the motorcycle straps in the enclosed trailer, I decided to do something different than a piece of string. 5cec705a4838774c6404f8436de56bfc.jpg
A piece of conduit, a pinch in the vise and a conduit bender to give it a bow, a new strap holder. 54911c555b0c047b3215cae518022883.jpg
Next task was to put back all the metal stock I’d remove from above the office. This time the stock was located in the floor joist, perpendicularly. One of the items was an aluminum sign post the got ran over by a reindeer. Hey, let’s try the horizontal bandsaw again.

I start cutting cf752687b983b296ff29bbd6e1092c52.jpg
However this somehow happened. 1bfe9d77e7a41339c4a7557048f4db9d.jpg I was so going for a different safety tip for October. For some reason the blade wants to twist. Since I have the twin, let’s jump from task #2 put stock back to #957, restore horizontal bandsaw. 80ae84620af9f01a419ce3ffc3768b8d.jpg first was trade out washer on tensioner. My washer was smaller and thinner. 9208bba26cb2a532eacede57e4e25e0d.jpg I also moved the clamp screw since mine was missing. Looking at the guides, they are different (same model no.) for some reason. Didn’t help so out came the portable bandsaw. b6445b6a227448b92fbc7b17641c3e6c.jpgffaa035e7e73ffe5fd1d280b84d6bb33.jpg on a positive note, the horizontal was great for holding post while I cut it.
