Jim, I’m still here. Lol. Fun, small projects even for one pushing 40. Wait this week I’m thinking 25.

BF, I always like a nice diorama. One day I’ll get around to the couple kits I have. Projects 231 and 456.

Clecos definitely look nicer. Still could use some cleaning and buffing on some. Goal was to remove the rust. One day I’ll finish the polishing...it’s on the list.

Guster, I have a history with AutoCad and MicroStation. Been playing with Sketchup on and off for years. Understanding the 360 workflow and where the tools are, I think I’ll really like it. Shortly I’ll have a reason for get proficient.

Thanks Xtremek. Only thing to be jealous of is our nice weather.

JC, John the toys are amazing. There has to be hundreds. Being “right down the road” you’ll need to check them out one day.

I finished up the guide holder by tapping the holes for the set screws. I did hit some voids but the screw seem to tighten. The screws are 6mm and I’m missing one. Where do you get metric set screws locally? Should have tapped for the smaller 1/4”. IMG_9569.jpg

Hopefully master caster Martin will be able to cast one for me. Thank you sir.

Damn, I have missed a bunch since the last time I stopped in.... I am still in a little shock after seeing the sanding video.... it’s as rare as a Bigfoot sighting or Gerard holding a paint brush! Glad there was some video evidence!

Seriously though, glad to see you have been getting some shop time. I have to say mucho respect on learning Fusion.... that is a goal of mine to learn something along those lines for use in a CNC router and plasma table I would like to build.

Shorty, normally I order specific nuts and bolts from Fastenal. Not sure if you have one in your area and maybe McMaster would work.

You haven't missed much. I had to sand so I could at least say I worked on the SL in the last 6 months. :headscrat When are we going to see some progress on the wood shop? I'm looking forward to that.

On Fusion, thankfully there are a lot of videos. Having years of drafting and CAD experience helps a lot also.

Thanks for stopping in. Our Fastnel Store has gone contractor only. They didn't have the shelves stocked well anyway. I really like the selection that McMaster has, just haven't ordered anything yet. I'm going to use 1/4" since that is readily available locally.

QST has been spotty as of late. Did spend some QST in JCQuick's really nice shop...eating BBQ and drinking brewskis.

I did get a new toy and have been busy playing with it. Amazon had a affordable sale on a Creality Ender 3 3d printer. My first creation and print was something for the wife. :bounce:
Next items were improvements to the printer. Through the graciousness of others, files are available on Thingiverse. At 6 o'clock is a filament loom to help the filament enter into the printer at a straighter angle. At 9 o'clock, is a back cover for the the display board. Not shown is a fan cover to keep things from falling into the circuit board fan.

At 3 o'clock is a whiteboard caddy. I could have got a pen starter kit with the caddy for $6 more but hey, I have a 3d printer. I like my design better and its a lot better than the thin plastic on the store brought caddy. Thanks again Andrew (Craptain) for the whiteboard.
The items in the middle and at top are scale models I made for practice. As you can see one is a model of my Lista tool cabinet. I figured I'd make models of my shop equipment so I could have my shop at home and play in the shop everyday. :headscrat

To follow up on the DP motor, I got it mounted and adjusted on the DP. Fired right up and drills great. After using my little entry level Craftsman DP for 19 yrs, I'm not going to know how to act.

Due to the huge increase in weight with this DP, I wanted a plywood top for the drill cabinet. I was going to use a piece of 1/4" ply but when cleaning off the drill cabinet, I found these two pieces that came from a desk that was in the warehouse when I brought. Score!!! A little trim and I have the perfect topper. The plan was to keep one for the stove, so this works out great.

Being all about safety, SAFETY FIRST! having the drill cab on casters allowed me to roll it over to the bench versus busting a gut. Once in place, I decided to lag the DP base to the topper. Safety! :bounce: Finally everything is back in place and ready for the next project.

And finally, the freed up space on the bench. This corner hasn't seen daylight in 2-1/2 yrs. :wtf: Does anyone need a brand new spool of coax cable or some 220v 3 phase pumps?

I was also able to get a little cleaning and organizing in. Great thing about the Lista and Vidmar cabinet is the ability to reconfigure them quickly. I decided to remove all the 1/2 drive stuff from my service cart so 5 minutes later, a new layout in the cab drawer. Looks someone needs to go to the tool store. :headscrat

Then finally, here is the dried out bin that I was doing the apple cider vinegar rust removal in. I'm amazed at how much was in there. The settlement was 1/16 to an 1/8" thick.

Looks good Shorty, always nice to a tool up and going. New cleat space is always nice.

That's a nice looking bandsaw back there:lol_hitti

Hope everyone had a Good Friday and a blessed Easter.
We had a freak storm come through Friday that reminded me of
Hurricane Michael. Couple hours later, sun was out, temps nice so I decided on some QST. Hope my shop time didn’t cause a earthquake or lightning. Something extremely shocking happened and it may, or may not had something to do with a mask.
Speaking of mask, today’s safety session is proper wear of respiratory protection device. When working with fumes or dust, a proper mask is a must. Know if you wear it on top of your head it probably won’t keep you from getting split-ends. Lol. Now Shorty, who would wear a mask improperly?

The Lone Ranger wore his mask over his eyes. Do you do that too, Super hero?

Where's my pattern?

Hi Oy Silver!
How’d you guess? Only problem, no eye holes and I ran into the wall. Kemosabe, watch out....thud...for the wall!!!

I emailed the file. Want me to send the part, I can do that too.

Shorty, you playing dress up with your PPE, again?:lol_hitti

Please make sure you take mask off before trying to punch holes in it!:shocking:

Wearing a mask for fumes. :headscrat, your starting to remind me of a priest wearing a condom at a nuns meeting.

Watch you talkin’bout Willis?
Well, well, well....what do we have here.
Is it a partially sanded and taped up SL?5480174f160b7588046bf0dd1d491553.jpg
Having the tape machine sure makes life easier. Thanks Craig for finding it.
Time to mixed some SPI epoxy primer. Didn’t realize there’s an induction time on this. Glad I finally read the instructions. I got this old darkroom timer to track time on paint jobs. Waiting 16 yrs to use it. 10a1489ce4667b0409a283e1ef595bbf.jpg. While waiting on paint, I checked pressure on gun. Couldn’t get the pressure low enough then realized I hadn’t put new regulator on. Can you say “Oh $h!t”. Panic! Do I have enough time? While changing regulators, fumbled fingers thought a drop test was in order. 3c8359bdf6ecd0a4aea9298a24032d65.jpg Ummm, double oh $h!t. Broke the 3m PPS cup holder. Panic!!! Do I have time? Do I have a replacement? Can I get this piece out of the gun? Luckily I did have a replacement, several actually. Whew! Pliers could grip enough to get piece out. Ok. Great. Got finished putting everything back together and tested and still had 10 minutes left on induction period.
Time for a mini miracle. Gun check 6ea45088c54b9200fde0829e0decb9cd.jpgPattern is to long which was evident in spraying 4af58fa0c710c8c1f85c8145d2277f65.jpga8c54d56bff9ed674f3a4809f2ea8a2e.jpg Things were smooth sailing from there. I got two layers on with one cup. When I went to take liner out, I noticed the cup was working it’s way off the holder. That would have been a mess.

Shorty, with all your minor mishaps on the gun, thanks, thank for making me feel normal. Now I'll smile each time I see the blue puddles on my concrete.:lol_hitti

Glad to see it primered, feels good to get the gun dialed in don't it.

So, shooting the red on Sunday?

One of the nice features of the 3M PPS system is being able to pull the cup assembly off the gun, cap it for later use then clean gun. Next morning, I started on three coat by quickly finished the reminder of cup. When setting up for refill, I remember the locking ring that holds cup to cup holder. Duh! Finished off second cup and decided to clean up. The other great feature of this system is remove cup, pull cup holder with liner off and throw away. Only clean up is the gun it’s self. Instructions said thinner or acetone but found Goo Gone worked the best. On these mixing cups, Goo Gone was the bombf8045269def73c38aa05b84c0fdde5e6.jpg. Acetone on top, Goo Gone on bottom.
The primer came out nice minus some tiger stripping due to wide fan and OE. c4302330d402d192b70b0c64d12e87f5.jpgcf2442b563afcba30bbf24cf1236a4b3.jpg8defad5d412c86417d61dbcb1ab57596.jpg
The roof was in great shape so I didn’t touch it. The lower plastic had time consuming areas to sand so that’s for a later date. 41e3500ce95a05c4b2d2ff511ddb85b8.jpg0ad1b694b63736c747d68ea9b4595e60.jpg. Goal was to get the metal covered.
If you remember waaaaayyyy back, I sprayed the hood with the custom spray wrap. Well it’s not coming off very easy. d31bf20831c5164a42d53060ef14f96d.jpg. Too thin of coat and has been on longer than it should. I decided to test some acetone. Nada. Well let’s try the Goo Gone! 79c20e40bfb329a495e2a6ff1bd767c9.jpg. Goo Gone might be a solution.

It's been nice guys, but this is it.

No more Garage Journal for me.

The SL is getting painted. What more is there to look forward to?

My life is essentially over.

Stewart, I see you are leaving me behind. I'm still sanding off lacquer primer I sprayed 35 years ago so I can shoot SPI black epoxy.

Andy

My neighbor has a M-B sitting under a car cover in his garage. I think it's a 1980's SL. He hasn't been on the road with it in a couple of years. A creampuff otherwise.

A guy who owns a body shop was given a ~198? SLC, it had been sitting in a by the ocean parking garage all its life. It's a 20K mile car, it belonged to an elderly person who obviously didn't drive it much. He was given the car by the family & was trying to decide what to do with it. He finally decided to re-do it cosmetically and what was needed mechanically. I suggested he could leave it out to tv & movie productions here in so. Florida. I haven't been by to see it, it should be done by now.

I’m sorry but you can’t leave GJ...until all the hammers are delivered....and you’ve taught us a few more cool things.

Well, you’ve been busy dodging out of control cars and chopping Ficus trees. I don’t have the first tree in our yard so plenty of time to sand...or go sit on a sandy beach.

Driftpin, ask them if they’d like another vintage SL. The price is right....seriously.

Xtremek, we can team up and getr’ done. Lol.

And tell them it has vintage paint........ oh wait, it was painted by a vintage dude:lol_hitti

Sure, I see the neighbor all the time. I'll mention it to him. I don't expect he's got a need for one though.

The guy who owns the body shop, sells a lot of cars. He just got done re-doing an MG Midget for his sick wife, the car is probably one of the best restorations I've seen, it's gorgeous, probably better than new, since it was completely hand assembled. I doubt there is a sales price he could get for it that would compensate him for the $$$$ it has in it. Unfortunately, his wife died, before she got a chance to drive it again. This guy is a Corvette enthusiast. He has a 427 C2 that he had in a show down here, he had three of his C2 customers win first, second, and third-place trophies in the show. Someone asked him, "you have the nicest C2 here, why-didn't you enter?"

He told them, "those guys with the big smiles, standing next-to their C2's? Those are my customers, I made a lot of $$$ off them having me restore their cars. I want them to be happy!"

The show was being judged by Dave McClellan, whom you know if you are a true-blue Corvette person. Dave was the guest of honor. After all the trophies were awarded, Dave gave out his personal choice award to my acquaintance the body shop owner.

Geez, I tossed a couple dozen of those darkroom timers in a dumpster about 40 years ago when we relocated our camera repair business back in NY. Filled 3 10-yarders with outdated camera, projector, and darkroom parts my father had accumulated over the years ….. hmmm, starting to see how I ended up on GJ.
