I've gone through most of the old threads, but din't see the answer. Does anybody know a rough estimate of the square foot cost for shot blasting?
Or what it would cost to rent the equipment and do it your self. Is this something fairly easy to do yourself?
Thanks,
Bret

I have seen professional floor finishes (Toole Floor Coatings, Albany, GA) use this equipment to rough up/etch a cement floor. It is the perfect thing, removes all traces of surface coatings such as cement finishes sealer/curing compounds, and other coatings that might affect the adhesion of the epoxy paint.

This equipment was very heavy, quite sophiscated and VERY expensive looking, I doubt it could be rented.

Seek out professional floor finishers that do paints, epoxys, and resurfacing and see what they have to say. This IS the best way to go, but I'm betting its expensive.

I'm not sure why you want to shot blast but an orbital sander will do much of what you want (prep the surface, remove old coatings, etc) and is cheap to rent and ez to use...a shotblaster can be rented, though.

I'm beginning to question the typical "shot blast" process on garage floors. A good friend of mine owns a rental company here in DFW, selfless friendly plug www.rentalstops.com. He showed me an industrial sand blaster he had that literally took the stain, and smooth like finish, off my drive way. I don't know how different it is than a shot blaster but from the pictures I've seen this might be faster. It was huge, had a 3 cyl. John Deere diesel serving as the air pump and literally would take 20 gallons or more of media. He told me the cost of the rental wasn't all that much, less than 200 for a weekend and the media was pretty cheap. Pennies on the pound. ... Just a thought... you might want to see if anyone has an industrial sand blaster.....

I'm just about finished on the outside of the new garage. I want to do something to the floor in about a month when its good and warm. I'm leaning towards epoxy. All the instructions for the various brands say that shot blasting is the best prep method. Its brand new, no sealers, oil, etc. Shot blasting might be overkill, but I've read too many threads here and other places where the coating is coming up due to improper prep. Guess I'm just paranoid. Don't want to do this but one time. Was just thinking if shot blasting wasn't too much more than acid etching it would be the best way to go. Do y'all think on new clean concrete that sanding would be just as good?

I have seen the shot blasting done and there is NOTHING to compare to the perfect rough ready to paint finish that you get with a shot blaster. It blasts and ***** up the shot so you have minimal mess. You take a bar magnet on wheels with a handle and roll it around to catch the stray shot.

Any kind of sand blasting would be a HUGE mess inside a building, I would hate to clean that up.

I do not blame you one bit for doing the prep correctly, better to spend the money once, that several times trying to fix a bad job.
