Please tell me if this item is a hardy for a small anvil. The octagonal post is approximately 5/16".

Traded a civil war era bone saw that I pd $30 for for this 128 lb English anvil. Once I started cleaning it up I discovered it is made by Hill in Birmingham between 1830-1850. It is in really great shape considering its age. A very uncommon brand.

FYI, the little bump on the side is called a clip horn. It's used for pulling clips on the side of a horseshoe that reduce the twisting/lateral forces on the nails.

My dad recently had a farrier out to shoe some of his horses. He showed the guy some photos of my great-grandpa's anvil and the farrier had lots of good to say about the old Peter Wright anvils. He has a large collection of Peter Wright anvils himself (go figure) so I might swing by to take a look one of these days.

Man this place costs me $$$! Was drooling over everyone's anvil today and decided I at least needed a railroad track anvil. Turns out they are all over eBay, and reasonably priced, too. Have one on the way.

I had a chance to upgrade and upsize recently. With some help from a member on here we figured out it weighs 314 lbs and is a Peter Wright. Now that i found the anvil thread i figured i would post it here too. Today starts a new welding table build with the anvil included.

I had a chance to work on my new welding bench that includes the anvil. I wanted a 33 1/2" top height, and the same for the anvil. That made it a little interesting to squeeze the tool boxes in but it worked out perfect in the end. There is no vibration at all on the table when using the anvil. The holes are drilled for hold down jigs that i plan on making. 1 1/4" nuts welded on the bottom of the table top so the jigs just thread in. Same for the vise bolts. Also handy for eye bolts for lifting the table if needed. There are 2 rear wheel assemblies (not shown) that are removable, so they are not in the way when using the table. The tool boxes were up against the back wall so they just got reused for the bench and i didn't need to paint the drawers again. Tomorrow i will make some plugs so the threads in the holes are protected.












The welding rod organizer was on the wall, just built a bracket to reuse it. Now i can start on the rest of that area.

I use it to true up rings, and to bell the ends of pipe.

Found an ASO in a job lot of tools I bought the other day. A Record No 11, can't find any details about them online so I'm guessing it's just a cast iron lump.

Well, it's certainly not a forging anvil at that size, so for light/soft metal work it's fine. If you need a beater that size, RR track is pretty easy to find...

Whats it weigh? 10-12 lbs? I like it for what it is.

Years ago a buddy of mine mounted his anvil, like yours, in a sand filled 30 gallon grease drum. The sand mounting deadened the ringing of the anvil. He had problems however with the anvil shifting out of level when working on the tail or horn of the anvil. Are you encountering the same problems as my friend?

So far I have not had any shifting problems. If it starts I will take some sand out and drop in a piece of 1/4" plate and some all thread rods add the sand back, and make some tie downs for the rod and anvil.

nine4gmc, the anvil sits on the sand, and the stand is full of sand ... about 225lbs. of sand.

Nice anvil, but price is kind of steep -- $900 firm for a 155 pound anvil is maybe double what the going rate is, isn't it? Something like $3 a pound is more like it, if I recall correctly.

Recently I bought out an older gentlemans collectiion of anvils. Got a total of 28 or so. 5 large ones and 24 small ones. Here are some pics. Top is an 80 lb English Hill anvil from about 1835 in nearly new condition (pd 120) below that is an 1877 pat date 111# Fisher Norris (pd 125). Then got this 85# Multi-products farriers anvil for $150. Lastly these two, a rough 218lb Peter Wright (100) and a better but still rough 152 lb Hay Budden (125). I then got all these miniatures for $5 each.
