Huck,
Could you show a better pic of the base? Looks like a cast base, but not sure where the hard wood is. And what do you mean by "French pigs"? I'm not following? Thanks.

good morning Tarnished, they are cast iron if u look closely under the feet of the double horn u will see what appears like a small sunken den area i have not installed the new hard wood yet. i will get u some better shots of them today.. i have a 450 cwt. swedish anvil on a base that most of the top is in set hardwood. i have 8 of these bases and they are very well thought out . i collect almost exclusively GERMAN anvils they are the cadillac of all anvils, Sandman P S French pig is the nickname for that style of anvils he has

3.25"-in long. Faintly stamped with name of Newark NJ hardware store.
Very nicely cast, I assume a salesman's sample?

EDIT :: Deciphered the stamping : L. Littell & Son Hardware.
Linus Littell started his hardware store in Newark in 1856, sold mechanics & farmers tools, hardware, iron, steel, machine belting, etc etc. Son was made a partner in 1872. Linus died in 1885. Haven't found how long the store continued/ continued under 'L Littell & Son' moniker.

OK I did a bit of research on my anvil.
It's a H&M Ameritage
Mouse hole forge
The digits are 1 - 2 - 12. (174 Lbs )
It was made between 1835-1854
I'm almost done making my pedestal block.
I bought it from an estate sale for $180.

So I went to this auction and bought numbers of items dicounted to my liking, and while I was there I also picked up this anvil... So I made a small stand for it tonight. Nothing crazy but just a good base for whacking things on. Lets see others, dont be shy. This one is just 55lbs... Its gonna be painted as well just need to figure out a color..

I like stuff like that as art, mostly cuz I hate most art.

what type of material are u going to use Fantm58?
I had some scrap pine 4"x 6" beams from a skid at work
I planed them down square and glued and clamped them
ill also be wrapping it in some 2" x 1/8" flat bar.
the pine is not supper hard, but on its end its pretty stout,

here are the pics, Tarnished :uzi:

Thanks Sandman, I have never seen a stand like that. Sweet! Do the boards/planks go all the way to the bottom, or cut to fit inside base? Who made this base, and any idea of the time frame? Any history behind them? Wonderful arrangement for stand that is for sure. Is that the same stand that you show in your "favorite's" shot? Some nice base's on that group for sure.

I dont have a real anvil just yet, but I am looking. I do have a small one made from small rail, a piece of mainline rail, some solid blocked of steel from the factory I work at, and a coupler off a train. That thing has many curves and holes and weighs almost 90 lbs. Its very hard steel. The tensile strength listed on the train spec books was insane.

I have one stand together but not finished. I used carriage bolts to hold it together. More to come on this one. It is roughcut 3x4 posts from an old shipping crate. This is just a temporary stand. I will build a steel and sand one later.

I cut apart some heavy bearings to get the balls for anvil testing. I have them from 1/2" up to about 1-1/2"

Sandman: always nice to see your old big cast iron STUFF. WELL DONE

Bug: nice looking anvils. i remember when i was about 5 my gramps would hand me those big steel bearings and i'd love them because i'd win all the marble games we played at recess with my STEELIES.

i usually bounce a 3/4 or inch STEELIE on an anvil so tell me how a 1.5 inch one does?

Sand- It was made in 1941, the stamp is on the side. Imagine what was going on in England when this was made!! She was a war horse! I got this from England with several others in a large shipment. ;-)

Been lusting after this for years. Finally got him to let it go. Has mark I didn"t get pic of, looks like tag in mold with rivets holding it. Has "44". Wonder if that's the build date? The mandrels make the deal really cool.

Finally after years of looking picked myself up a little anvil today. Actually went to pick up a blacksmiths vice I'd bought but this little baby kept calling my name so got chucked in the back of the Land Rover to :) Need to clean it up to see if I can find a makers mark. It does have some damage to the edge and a small cut.

CW: LITTLE ANVIL?? with those weight stamps it looks like it weighs 224 pounds which might be a perfect size to own. also those stamped numbers look like a Peter Wright and i like that style too. glad to see you are not anviless any longer. sadly i am now, but my own fault because i sold a few PW's that were 100-177 pounds thinking i would like a bigger one that hasn't shown up yet.

Joe: did you put BLO on those anvils and cook them? they are almost too shiny. that one you don't know the maker and can't find any marks looks nice and clean so i would have bought it too. you might not own an old 8 inch wide jaw vise yet, but looks like you've got plenty of old iron sitting around in your shop.
