I picked up a 215lb anvil for $120. It was cracked and repaired at one point but it's better than nothing. At least half of it has decent rebound.

Here's my 140# anvil before I put it on a stand. It's a great user.

Oh, if anyone has an anvil weighing 100# or less that they want to sell, let me know. I'm looking for one for my daughter who is learning blacksmithing. I want one that she can pick up and move if she needs to. Let me know if you have anything. Thanks.

I don't have possession of it yet (Dad is still using it) but someday I will inherit a nice 90 pounder that has been in my family for 5 generations (including me). My great-great grandfather came here from Sweden in the 1880's and it was one of his first purchases here in the States (he was a blacksmith). He didn't have horses or a wagon yet, so he had to carry it on his back 20 miles cross-country from the railroad depot back to the homestead. I will try to get a picture of it the next time I'm at the farm.

Picked this Colonial hornless anvil today. 140 lbs. I'm pretty happy to have picked it up. You can see Boston chiseled into its side.

I made the mistake of looking at a new 330lb Refflinghaus anvil recently, and made a deal on it involving a partial trade for a vise I have. So, I sold my Hay Budden to a local blacksmith who was looking for something exactly that size. Turns out he teaches blacksmithing classes about five minutes from my office, so I'm hoping to start those soon.

I picked up a super clean 70lb Vulcan today for a reasonable price. I think I want to have something smaller than just the 330lb beast, but maybe a bit bigger than this...not sure yet. I just couldn't pass it up since it looks almost unused.

Well if you don't want that anvil, I'll take it. I am looking for a 75lb anvil and 70lb is close enough!

I guess I'm a frequent flier on this thread now. I sold the 70lb Vulcan after 22 hours on Craigslist....it was just a bit smaller than I wanted.

Today I picked up a 130lb Vulcan at a local auction. The funny thing is, there were four anvils, and the bidding was silly on the others, and not not this one. I think they didn't realize a Vulan isn't supposed to have a high-pitched ring. It's got really nice rebound, and the edges are untouched. Some pitting/dimples in the face that wouldn't take much at all to clean up.

Finally got my new 330lb No. 57 Refflinghaus anvil home!

Here it is next to my new (to me) 130lb Vulcan and a bunch of vises to give it some scale.

GMAN: your old cast iron collection just keeps growing and growing. one helluva magnet if you ask me.

WELL DONE and nice looking anvils and vises you've acquired. do you see a lot of anvils that are chipped from banging on them with cold steel? since you have such nice clean anvils i bet you might have a few good blacksmiths in your area to learn a little from.

best of luck on your future finds and i'd suggest you getting a hydraulic lift table if you buy things much bigger or do you already own a fork lift?

He needs one of these! This one is mine, I have two of them. I've lifted an 800 lb block of granite with this. Just fabulous.

I picked this up at an estate sale. It was holding a door open, so I replaced it
with a bucket of paint and took it up to the cashier. They wanted $8.00 for it
and I talked them down to $6.00. This is the first time I have ever found a deal at an estate sale. I apologize for the sideways picture.

I was visiting family in PA over the weekend and decided to check Craigslist to see if there was anything interesting. I saw an ad for a Peter Wright anvil that looked really clean, but noted it was nearly two weeks old, and figured it was long gone.

It was literally only 10 miles away, so I figured it was worth a shot, and sent the guy a note asking if he still had it, and gave him my cell. Sure enough, he still had it, and we met the next day. He thought it was only 200lbs, but the 2-2-25 British hundredweight marks work out to 305lbs.

Long story short, my father and I ran over there, I bought it, we tossed it in the back of his truck and then did a tailgate transfer into my truck before tying it down to the front of the bed. I'm going to make a heavy steel tripod stand for it...should be pretty cool.

It's still got amazing rebound (easy 85%+) and ring and I can't wait to give it a try! It just needs a tiny bit of mushrooming from the edge cleaned up, and it'll be ready to go to work.

Since Photobucket has gone completely ridiculous, I had to edit an upload a picture.

GMAN: i love PW anvils and would love to own one the size you found. only issue i see is moving it around cause that approaches a weight not easily picked up or moved.

did you use an engine hoist to remove it from your truck and were you and your dad able to pick it up and put it in his truck?

Joe: that must have been some toolbox. do you still own a Fisher chain vise or did you donate it to that person that has a museum?

Speaking of small Fishers, here's a couple cuties.... The hard to find #0 on the bottom, and sitting on top, the super-rare Fisher #00. Even on these small ones you can still see the steel plate cast line extending out to the horn.

Here's a small Mouse Hole Forge anvil. It weighs about 56 pounds, great condition, and the markings put it in the early 1900s. It has a very clear mouse stamp.

I would truly love to own a mouse hole anvil. Although the forge was gone, I grew up very close to the location. Used to ride my bike and play in the river on the site.

Hey Drives,

The seller had a set of ramps, so we strapped it to a hand truck, and I got in the bed to pull, while they stood on the ground and pushed...it worked pretty well. We did a tailgate to tailgate transfer to get it in my truck, and I used an engine hoist to remove it when I got home....my favorite method!

Anvils this size are neat, but are actually probably too big for what many people do with them. Stick a 1/4" thick round bar on it and it ***** the heat right out of it really fast and it's a long reach to use the far shoulder.

The blacksmith shop I just spent the weekend in didn't have a single anvil over 200lbs and said they would only like to add one from 300-500lbs as a striking anvil for times when they team forge and use really big hammers on large stock.

I managed to get lucky and saw a CL ad for an anvil the morning the blacksmithing class started, so I called the guy during our lunch break and stopped by on my way home. The seller got it from his mother-in-law and said it had been in the family for decades (he was in his 70s). They didn't know anything about it, but it's a 167lb Trenton made in 1926...it still has amazing rebound and ring. I'm taking it to the shop next week and the guys there are going to help me dress out the shoulders to get rid of the chips (luckily they aren't deep) so I can put it to work. I think this is going to be my primary anvil for a while...we'll see.

The Trenton logo isn't clear in the picture, but in person it's pretty obvious. This was after about five minutes of cleaning with a wire wheel.

Come visit Michigan...I've got one for sale! I got this from a local picker...it's 146lbs and according to the Postman book on the Mouse Hole Forge it dates from 1854 to 1875.

The pictures make it look like it has more sway than it does...I measured it at 3/64" which is pretty minimal. It still has really good rebound and ring.

I wish I could. Michigan is not unreasonable some day, but right now I have too much going on. Too busy with my new machine tools, when I should be concentrating on hand tools.

I've managed to find a couple more nice anvils lately. First up is a 130lb Kohlswa from Sweden....this thing has amazing rebound and a very loud ring. I welded up a stand for it over the weekend.

Second is a 130lb Lakeside marked Hay Budden that was made in 1913. Lakeside was a Montgomery Ward trade name years ago. The interesting thing about this anvil is I bought it from the great-grandson of the original owner. His great-grandfather went to work for the county doing general blacksmith and farrier duties in 1913, and they know that because it was the same year his grandfather was born. All of that matches up that it's a one-family anvil...very cool. Sadly the seller had no one to pass it down to and was in a tight spot financially. He was actually asking too little for it, so I paid him a fair price. I'm going to make a stand for it similar to the one the Kohlswa is on.

The plan is to have large and small anvils next to forges both outside and inside my shop....rather not have to drag them around. I'll probably pair up the Kohlswa with my 330lb Refflinghaus and then have the Lakeside paired up with my 305lb Peter Wright. If nothing else, I won't be able to say I didn't have a suitable anvil if I can't get any work done!
