Found this anvil at a swap meet. It's a Hay Budden. I originally thought the base had been broken off, but I have since seen pictures of two others complete with holes. Both had makeshift stands. Paid $90. Excellent rebound and rings like a bell.

GET: thanks for posting your friend's anvil over here. is he a member or maybe he should be so he could tell us more about that AMAZING ANVIL. or do you know a brand or company's name of the maker and maybe some weight and size facts?

how many anvils do you own or did you stop at vises?

GMan: that's how my collection or HOARDING as you might call it. i bought a few nice vises and anvils to flip and end up with a few nicer ones than i already owned. then somewhere along the way i didn't have time to sell them as fast as i was buying them. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR growing herd.

I don't know anything about anvils but have had one for years.
I don't use it often but it's nice to have when I need something bigger than my vice.

I recently came into a few more that I took shots of but don't know any history of.

My original one

I can't make out what this is on the side

Don: great looking anvil. i think that's an Eagle on the side of your anvil and maybe somebody here knows or has the book of Anvils that might tell us who made it.

one thing i'd like to mention that maybe nobody told you is you shouldn't pound on an anvil with cold steel unless it's thin steel and lightly cause you can chip the edges. some guys have a huge piece of I beam to pound cold steel on or a chunk of RR track works nicely too.

if you have hot metal to pound then pound away.

thanks for sharing pics of some more of your COOL STUFF.

Don: very nice and looks like a great start to your WESTERN TOWN BUILD.

the smaller one is a VULCAN which you could probably see and they are fairly common. the others are companies i'm not familiar with so others will have to say if they know.

sunny here today, but we don't have the 80 degrees you do so ENJOY your rest day with your kids.

cheers

Nice anvil collection you have going there Don. Of course your original anvil with the Fisher eagle on it is a very nice Fisher. Mounting holes on the feet also give it away. Also nearly all Anvils made with Swedish steel are very good. Ed.

... and to anvils! Don't know if every shop should have the same, but I like these four: (1) bench vise; (2) post vise; (3) RR track; (4) real anvil.

Just picked this up today at a moving/Estate sale:

Almost walked past it! :shocking: Actually I did, heading for the garage. I spotted it just as I was getting ready to pay for the other stuff I'd found.

Got it for $20! :rocker:

44 Lb Peter Wright! Good rebound, and not too beat!

This one may motivate me to setup the new, larger, E-tank! I'm thinking BLO after the rust is gone...

:bounce: Not even railroad rail - but it was fun making it. Sits on the work bench for "small" jobs.

Yeah, AIA is such a great read ... enjoy! And don't be surprised if you can't put it down ;)

That book will send your anvil hunting into high gear! Last year I bought a small Vulcan that wasn't even listed in AIA lol. That made my day!

Scored this anvil for $50 the other day. It's HEAVY. I can't seem to find any markings on it but I also haven't cleaned it up yet. It appears old but should there be markings on it no matter what?

I haven't cleaned it up yet. What's the best way to do so without killing it? Any specific place I should be looking for markings? This is my first anvil.

I am used to them being on the other side of the anvil, "horn to the right"
But some have markings on front and back. Start with a set of picture of all sides
then go from there. Some nice close ups would be cool.. if we cant make out any markings from that there are a few tricks members have posted.

LR, is there anything in AIA on an Anvil Co. called or marked Mc's? It has a bell shape integrated in the logo.

Probably not old. Guessing in business as recently as 30-40 years ago if not still in business. I just can't find anything on this anvil.
